View Full Version : In Your Honor--Copy Protected CD Discussion

Hey everyone,
I bought my copy if IYH on Friday (gotta love shady independent record stores that don't wait until the release date to start selling new releases). The CD has a sticker on the front that says the CD is protected against unauthorized duplication, and includes a link to the following website: http://www.sunncomm.com/support/sonybmg/
When I get CD's I usually rip them onto my computer, and also make a copy for my car (both legal).
So the other day I ripped the first disc of IYH onto my computer through Windows Media Player--no problem, all the files were created. I tried today, though, to try to play back the .wma files, and they all skip--it sounds like a scratched CD, but I guess it was their way of copy protection against MP3's.
I figured even if the CD was copy protected, I would at least be able to rip it onto my computer and burn the WMA or MP3 files onto a CD.
I understand the reasoning behind copy protection, but it's frustrating that those of us who make legal copies for our own use have to suffer, too.

I wouldntve bought the cd if I knew this..... this really frustrates me big time.... and I cant get enough quaility... and you cant even put them on your ipod... does anyone know how to get them at 320kbit mp3's and be able to put them on your ipod????

Depends on where you bought it...in the UK, they copy protect most of the CDs cause a lot of people who bought the new Coldplay album had the same problems. I bought my Coldplay CD in Seattle at Best Buy and already burned 2 copies and ripped it as mp3s onto my computer.
If you buy it at Best Buy, most likely it won't be copy protected. Just shop around for one without the sticker since they're clearly marked.

Illegalize copy-protection on CDs! You are just spoiling for the home users, Let us do what we want with our stuff. The CDs WILL come out on the web, copy-protected or not, so give it up...

If I can't rip my copy, I'm downloading a torrent to get the MP3s of the album, illegal? Maybe, but I rip all my music to my computer so why shouldn't I be able to do that? The band and record company have my money, why should I have to get the CD everytime I want a listen?
Plus, copy protection is an expensive waste of time, how many times has a "copy protected" album ended up as an illegal download anyway? Even if the person ripping it has to use an audio recording program, they can still get round copy protection. They should invest making CDs cheaper.

Exactly my point! But it’s quit annoying that when you have bought something then you can’t rip the CD correctly and you have to download it of the web. Thanks to copy-protection I have skipped buying many music CDs that I like just for the annoying copy-protection. Now I couldn’t resist ordering the new Foo CD, but that is going up in the shelf for viewing and collecting dust.

Oh man,
I hate these copy-protected CDs. Not because I can't always rip them (go figure) but because they're rife with corrupt data. So every now and again, while playing the CD on an older player, I'll hear a pop or a crack. These discs are also more affected by any damage that occurs as they're manufactured "damaged".
The only way to be able to get around this is to copy the CD using a cd/dvd drive that will play it and creating a copy without corrupt data and playing that instead. Kinda defeats the point of the copy protection doesn't it??
btw, the torrents that have been floating around the web are pretty good quality and I've had the album on my iPod for the past couple of weeks thanks to that leak.

Oh, forgotten them copy-protection (A very long time ago I bought a CD with that protection :)) and remember when I got home and wanted to play the CD and didn’t hear anything, that CD was cut in to pieces and drag on the street.

I just tried pressing shift to bypass the autorun to get the CD to burn, and it started burning and halfway through the first track it said there were write errors. I tried another blank CD and the same thing happened. Then I tried holding down shift the entire time the CD was burning, and the entire CD burned without any errors, but when I tried playing it back, the songs "skipped" like the original .wmv files... ah...

after all my complaining, i bought the cd and actually tried it... just hold shift as you put the cd in until you hear it stop being accessed by the computer, then you can use itunes or EAC or whatever to rip it. worked great for both discs for me.

I tried to rip the new CD (that I purchased at Best Buy today) in Windows Media Player 10 on 2 different PC's and had no luck. Both sound like they are skipping. I then did some digging and found a site about ISO's that linked me to a lot of sites with bittorrents on them. I think I can download the album from there and keep it on my PC, then I can leave the CD in my car.
I can't believe I have to go to some other site to get music I've already purchased. Ridiculous!
Oh, and that shift key thing doesn't work either.
Great album Foo Fighters, assanine protection.

I just figured out that the shift trick only works if you do it every time you put the cd in your computer. So, if you ever put your cd in the computer without doing the shift trick, it will never work again. so BE SURE TO DO THIS the first time you put the cd in your computer, and rip right away!!! i ripped everything fine and then was experimenting and got the cd skipping sound every time i tried the shift trick after putting in the cd without the shift trick and letting it acquire the licenses.

I had no problem at all I copied the 2 discs onto musicmatch and then burned them onto discs. I always do this so I can take my copies to work to play. I wouldn't want to ruin my nice new original album. Maybe it's different in the UK.

Well, Target, Circuit City and Best Buy all had copy protected versions and I ended up and bought it at Best Buy since that was the 3rd place I went to.
On the computer it won't play in my ATI CD without skipping, it won't play in Winamp unless I get some license. Then I tried to make a copy on my separate CD-R drive and all of the WAV songs skip, and I tried to rip them as mp3s instead and they skip as well.
This means I can only listen to the album on my portable CD player, in the car, or in my home stereo. What good is a CD if I can't even listen to it on the computer anymore? Fuck the FBI and the music industry for making everything miserable for music fans lately.
Pretty soon it's gonna be illegal to even hear music in general.

Hey all, I'm new to the board and love the Foo-- but what caught my eye while reading the forum for the first time today, was this thread. My CD was ordered through Amazon and on schedule to get to my ears sometime tomorrow :)
Anyways, I did some research on the subject and found a great read about this: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~jhalderm/cd3/
This college student did a report on this sunncomm software and found out how it works, how to prevent it from getting into your computer, and better yet, how to disable its protection after its in (so its not too late!!).
I hope this helps some of you guys, I know that I'm sure as hell gonna get the Foos' new CD on my ipod-- legally or not-- so hopefully this'll be a legal option for us all :)

oh, BTW-- for those of you getting sick of holding shift everytime you pop in a CD and, like me, fear of the one time you don't-- you can disable the autorun feature in windows by going here:

Hope this helps!!

ok, so i bought the copy protected cd from Target. brought it home and popped the first disc into my pc. the window came up to copy the album, which i did with the first disc, then the 2nd. i saved the files in the "my music" folder, then proceeded to burn myself copies of each one using windows media player 10. i tried the cd in my car, and it plays just fine...no skipping, nothing like that.

I guess the main question I am asking right now, is as to whether it's legal for them to load a driver on to your computer without asking if you agree to it? If not, I would love to fight and sue this company. I've never even heard of these Suncomm schmucks before. I'm so tired of people telling us what we can and can't do with music.

I really haven't posted here before but, this issue with the copy protection has made me. I NEVER clicked to agree to allow RCA, Sony, Sunncomm, the president, or God (for that matter) to install ANYTHING on my computer. In fact, after seeing typically "DRM is good for you" window I immediatly canceled it.
Well, after reading the Princeton article I decided to check my system for the offending driver (sbcphid.sys). Amazingly, it was magically installed on my system. Honestly, this is completly ridiculous and a blatant disregard to the rights of consumers and as a citizen in general of the United States (I'd imagine this would be similar in other countries).
I know for a fact this CD is the culprit as I reinstalled Windows just a few days earlier and NO audio cd had been in it before I put in "In Your Honor". I'm going to try it out on my other systems though to see if this is a repeatable occurance.
I'm really torn on what to do here. I believe this to be a clear violation of my rights and I'm rather upset about it. There was no prior warning that anything would be installed to my PC. Companies should be held accountable for such disreputable behavior with blatant disregard to its customers.
Has anyone else had similar experiences with the driver being installed without your permission?

I was about to post that exact link, worked like a charm, BECAUSE they installed crap on my computer!!...People, we must remember that this is not the Foo's Fault. Even if it was a giant headache to be able to just listen to the album on my computer at a bit rate and file type that i wanted, It's not the Foo's fault. BMG/Sony has begun doing this to all of their new albums. I'm sure the Fighters didn't sit down and say "Let's screw over our fans". However we gotta let the record companies know that we're not exactly Thrilled with thier treatment of the the "always right" consumer.
Grab yer bricks and bats, we're going to pay a visit to Sony/BMG tonight...

got mine at target. ripped it in itunes and put it on my iopd without a hitch. all songs sound great with no skipping or anything. i think the problem may be mostly on Windows machines. I have done it on an old Powermac g4 desktop and on a new powerbook. when i put the disc in 2 images actually come up...one is the software and one is .aiff audio files that play in quicktime and itunes. no software ran automatically.

Use the part about disabling the driver:
Start with a Windows 2000/XP system with empty CD drives.
Click the Start button and select Control Panel from the Start Menu.
Double-click on the System control panel icon.
Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.
Configure Device Manager by clicking "Show hidden devices" and "Devices by connection," both from the View menu.
Insert the Anthony Hamilton CD into the computer and allow the SunnComm software to start. If MediaMax has never been started before on the same computer, the SbcpHid driver should appear on the list for the first time. However, on some systems Windows needs to be rebooted before the driver becomes visible.
At this point you can attempt to copy tracks from the CD with applications like MusicMatch Jukebox or Windows Media Player. Copies made while the driver is active will sound badly garbled, as in this 9-second clip [10].
Next, follow these additional steps to disable MediaMax:
Select the SbcpHid driver from the Device Manager list and click "Properties" from the Action Menu.
Click the Driver tab and click the Stop button to disable the driver.
Set the Startup Type to "Disabled" using the dropdown list.
With the driver stopped, you can verify that the same applications copy every track successfully. Setting the Startup Type to disabled prevents MediaMax from restarting when the computer is rebooted. It will remain deactivated until LaunchCD.exe is allowed to run again.
Equivalently, executing the following commands from the Command Prompt will deactivate MediaMax:
net stop sbcphid
del %systemroot%\system32\drivers\sbcphid.sys

Yes it's legal, because you agreed to it. Shrink wrap, click wrap, and browse wrap contracts are binding and you're held to the terms you agreed to whether you read all of the license agreement or not. I know this cause I just finished up with International Business Law at university last week.
Sad thing is, I can't even find the damn driver on my computer to disable it, lol.

If that is the case, there should be a license agreement on the shrink wrap because how are we supposed to know that?

Just a complaint that all I want to do is play [not copy] the CD on my computer and I have to download software. I label warning against duplication is a lot different than saying this will not play on your computer unless you download unnecessary software in 2 point font on the back of the CD. This will be the last CD I buy with this protection. FYI-I have never downloaded a CD from the net in my life.
Does anyone have a link to Sony BMG to complain?

I purchased the new Foo CD yesterday at the local Circuit City, got it in my car and listened to some of the album, pretty good stuff. Got it home and obviously I ripped it to my iTunes folder and put it on my iPod so I can listen to it to and from work. Got to work this morning and wow, all the songs skip! Well I seriously doubt the Foo Fighters look at any of these posts, but all I can say is they aren't gaining any fans by pulling shit like this. The fact of the matter is that the music is going to be on the web illegally one way or another, you should realize this and there are some fans that will go and buy the album regardless. I mean just look at the board from the last few days, THERE ARE METHODS POSTED ON THIS BOARD THAT ALLOW YOU TO WORK AROUND THE COPY PROTECTION!!!! I didn't buy this CD to listen to it in CD format, I don't really think anyone does this anymore, and I didn't buy it to have to install some stupid media player that will only be useful for one album. This was a big mistake on the Foo Fighters part to do this, your music will be out there illegally even with your great copy protection, cause basically people will outsmart the assholes who copy protected the album. Sorry Foo, you lose....both the copy protection and fans who would have bought this and future albums. If I had the option, I would return the album and find it on the web illegally. come on, stop blaming the band for the fucking copy protection. god! have you ever heard of record companies or something like that. i mean they (the record companies) established copy protection (even like the software industry) to decrease illegal sharing (as mp3s) and raise their declining volume of sales. It wasn't Dave or Nate or any other musician who said, oh, lets put a copy protection on our CDs to tease all our fans and to earn a lot of extra cash. A few years ago Dave said in a radio interview that he's all for any kind of distribution, whether it's bootleg, whether its mp3 and so on.
But yeah, you are right. Return the CD and download it illegally. That would better the problem.....oh wait, or was it the origin ??????????

Yeah, in my opinion (let me just make that clear, in my opinion) a boycott will do very little for the situation as there's always going to be a crapload of people who buy the CDs anyway, there will never be a big enough proportion of boycotters to make a difference. The problem needs to be tackled in some other fashion. How? I don't know, maybe a movement by retailers or something, someone more than 'the common consumer'. Either that or a massive organised group of consumers. Maybe something entirely different. Thoughts?
I just don't think boycotting is the way to go, unless it can be achieved on a very large scale, which I really doubt. A large number of people just sit there and take this crap because it's too hard to stand against it, or they don't know any better.
Edit: Whoa, hold on. Almost forgot about the music there. What's better than owning the original in all it's kick ass packaging glory? *looks at his limited edition* You'd be hard pressed to make me not buy that, it rocks [it also doesn't have copy protection, but hey :p] Copy protection in this form needs to die. It can't be done with CD media dammit. And probably not with any other media at that. Change your fucking way of marketing stuff to the world, labels, embrace the internet, not go all out trying to stop it.

It will be the last Foo Fighters album I buy..
People are freaking out wayyyy to much over this.
Take a few extra minutes and disable the driver. I was explaining to my computer savy friend and she just laughed, "Well it will get rid of the lazy ones. I know it sucks to do it in the first place, but well life is a bitch at times.
I take it I am the only one who bought another new album yesterday because the exact same protection is on that album too and it's not RCA or Sony. It's not the band. It's the record industry. Getting worked up about it is going to accomplish nothing.

If anybody knows how to disable the driver or find it for that matter on Windows 98, please help me out. The system's device manager options aren't the same as Windows 2000 or XP. There's no "Show hidden devices" option, and there's no such file as sbcphid.sys or whatever on my entire computer.
I already accepted the MediaMax terms and stuff on another CD I bought last year and I accepted the terms with the Foo album so I could listen to it but it doesn't even play in MediaMax. I want to know how to disable MediaMax after the driver (supposedly) has been installed. I just wanna be able to listen to it on the computer (in Windows Media Player, ATI audio, or Winamp) and burn a copy.
Somebody...Windows 98 help?

The internet does it all the time.
And yes it is against your rights, but sonys view on it will be: "if you have a problem with this your obviously a pirate."
The difference is that this isn't some shady quasi-legal or offshore company installing software. This is Sony! (Yes, I know they're a Japanese company but they're still bound by US laws if they're going to publish here).
It's wrong on the internet and it's wrong for Sony to do it. Class action suit anyone?

I'm probably going to f*ck things up by posting this and Sunncomm will find a way to fix it...but here's a method:
_http://www.epirate.net/mediamax.htm
I haven't found a way to verify if my ripped mp3's are actually at the bitrate I selected, and not re-ripped from the shitty-arse 128 crap Sunncomm allows you. This company needs to disband, they lose at life.

My PC wouldn't rip it either with EAC, so I used
Audiograbber (which is nice, free, spyware-free software)
http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/download.html
You can set it to rip to MP3 or WAV. I used the FreeDB button to find the names of the tracks and then I ripped to WAV and will compress with a lossless format like Monkeys Audio (APE) to preserve the quality. Exactly the same quality as the discs and half the size!

Wow, you guys are having problems. I put my CD in, and it had a player. One of the options on the player thing was 'Copy'. I clicked it and it saved all of the songs to my music folder. I don't need the CD to listen to it. It works fine.

Yea, that's weird. I popped it into my computer and a Foo Fighters player thing just showed up, after the "do you agree .. blah blah blah" thing. And it let me copy it to windows media.
check on ePirate.com for help, though. i disabled something, that might help it.

Uh if you haven't noticed though, playing and copying the music through the
Foo Fighter auto-play function produces 128kbs audio.........which sucks complete....anus? I'm really pissed at the recording industries, and this whole deal has completely destroyed any of the amazingness that i was expecting out of this album. I was hoping for the experience i had with one by one, but this is just crap. Sorry Foo's you have lost my heart...........

sorry about my previous post, but that was the audio quality i was stating, 128 kb/s, which always sounds a little crackly compared to 192 kb/s audio, also for people stating that the foo fighters (who up until now i've been a fanatical supporter of) had no say in this decision.......how could they not? Do musicians no longer own the rights on how to produce their music? And if they somehow had no knowledge of what sony was doing why do we not have some sort of posted apology by the band about how it was out of their hands? I'm really sorry, but this has completely destroyed my week, so i'm kinda bitter about the whole situation.....

I'm pretty sure Sony BMG is forcing all the DRM stuff on all their artists. This may sound like crap, but if you go back a couple of pages and read the material I posted it certainly sounds like the label is really pushing it onto everyone. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with it, and yeah, it sure does suck, but don't blame the band. I've heard Dave say many times lately that he's in it for the music now, not the money. He also doesn't mind sharing. Why would he bother with DRM? Yeah, he may have known about it, but still, I'm almost certain the label forced it most of the way.

since i have a recording studio in my basement, i just plugged my CD deck from my stereo into my RCA bay on the front of my computer, and hit play on the Deck, and Record on my computer. then i just cut it up into tracks. no biggie.
but the fact that i paid money for this and cant rip it unless its 128 WMAs is super-lame. but now i have some spiffy 320 mp3's that i can burn and put on an iPod or whatever i want.

If you have an audio recording software (i.e. Goldwave) you can play the CD and record the song. All you have to do is go to the volume control on your right corner, double click, go to Options - properties - recording and select the stereo mixer as your recording device.

I have a few things to say. One is that my copy of In Your Honor is not copyright protected but I have the special edition box one or whatever so does that make a difference? Also, I don't know what it is like in other places but I know that in Australia, it is illegal to make unauthorised copies of a copyrighted recording, even if you paid for the original. So that means even if you're going to rip and burn a copy for your car. You're just plain and simple not allowed to do it. But hey... *looks at 70 burnt cd's in glove box*

No problem. I'm glad I was able to get the word around, but it was Stevorino's website that gave me that.
As far as the whole just put the CD in hit accept terms and then hit copy the songs button issue...That doesn't work for I-Tunes. It converts the songs to wma format and I-Tunes compatiblity is different from wma. Usually it can convert the songs, but for some reason it can't convert the copied to the computer songs. I tried that before too. It's much easier to just disable the driver in my opinion. Because as I said before it's not just the Foo Fighters album it's a few new releases and once you disable it it's disabled for good.

so ya, i got a protected one too. aint it a bitch? apparently the deluxe edition with the dvd isnt proteced, the one time i ahd to be cheap. the worst part of this, is its all supposed to protect pircay, yet the cd has been up online for a while now, so its not really owrking, jsut a big hastle for the people who actually paid for it. my advice is, either rip it from someone who bought the deluse edition or dowload it off bit torrent. so ya, im pissed that i spent money on it and cant listen to it yet without finding my old cd player (which is practicly broken) when i could have downloaded it for free and had it already.

Hey everybody,
What good does it do to complain in the echo chamber of the discussion board. Complain where it counts. The encraption software is made by a company called Sunncomm, which is based here in sunny Phoenix Arizona.
Their website says "We love to hear from you," so let them hear from you!
Their phone number is 602.267.7500
Their address is 668 N. 44th St, #248, Phoenix, AZ 85008. (668 is pretty close to 666!)
Google and public records are wonderful things. If you go on the State of Arizona website, and go to the Corporation Commission, (www.cc.state.az.us, then go to records/corporate LLC) you can find the company's corporation papers, (which seem to be a tad out of date). William H. Whitmore, Jr., is an officer in the corporation (although he's not listed on the website). You can watch a video of him touting how wonderful his software is on his company's site, sunncomm.com.
Go to the Maricopa County Assessor's website (www.maricopa.gov/assessor) to find that Bill and his lovely wife, Diane, live at 9098 E. Ludlow Dr., Scottsdale, AZ. Perhaps you could write him a letter expressing your frustration with his shitty software. (While you're on the Maricopa County website, dash on over to the Recorder's area, and plug in Sunncomm in the search area and check out the nearly $500,000 judgment against Sunncomm.)
Not the letter writing type? Call Bill at home at 480.767.8330 and tell him how well the software has worked for you. (Thanks, Google!)
Along that line, here are the company employees/officers from the sunncomm website, as well as contact info:
Albert Golusin, Chief Financial Officer
10641 N. 44th St., Phoenix, AZ 85028
602.795.5347

480.998.5976
Lynn Marzonie, Controller
21274 E. Bonanza Way, Queen Creek, AZ 85242
480.987.3366
The Boss is a guy named Peter H Jacobs, but I couldn't definitively track him down. The IT Guy is Eric Van de Water, and I couldn't be sure if the one I found in public records was the one associated with sunncomm or not.
Remember, they "love to hear from you." Just don't be mean or nasty. Just let them know how their badly implemented software is affecting your enjoyment of the new Foo!

Dude, you've complained in about three posts now. Get over it. RCA, BMG, and Sony records have cut deals with Mediamax software protection, so basically this is seeding to the smaller record labels these labels own as well such as Roswell and Arista.
It sucks for everyone who has to deal with it, but the ways of getting around it are so easy. The system is completely flawed. I was about ready to bitch all hell when it first happened to me, but I got over it.
So if Dave Grohl amazing appears out of thin air to answer you. You come back around and let us know. We can all play some ping pong while voicing our discontent.

To be fair, this isnt going to get anywhere. Do you think a company who sell copy protection as a job are going to think "ah lots of complains this week, lets close down the offices"....even if they did, sony would just goto another company. Sunncomm are just doing this as a way of living, they saw it was profitable and did it, theyre not going to stop now just because some music fans want it stopped. Contacting Sony/BMG/RCA would be a much better idea. Although emails sent to RCA seem to spend around 6 days hovering around the server, and then come back to you saying "I was in a queue for 6 days, and I have decided to give up"....which I think is a childish message anyway.

Actually sunncomm should be getting complaints from sony... since their shit doesnt work all that well...
If I had an ipod and was unable to use it with this album I would probably be mad too, and it would be nice if the rich band would have demanded no copy protection, but thats the way it goes. Foo Fighters finally got screwed by the record industry... The big wigs at RCA really put it on them this time, making them look like HYPOCRITES... They should use all the money from this album and build a Foo Fighters Music Conservatory on-line where all music is free!!!
so heres to hypocrisy, STOP BITCHING ABOUT YOUR IPODS

I've noticed it's only the US version that has copy protection on it because of RIAA, if you could somehow get a shop tha does cheap imports, or even amazon.co.uk, it might fix your problem and get you the album, plus, if a lot of people import the non-copy protected versions it might prove how poor the copy protection really was.

Odds are pretty good Dave hasn't been sitting around his computer since the 14th, checking up on the board.
Honestly, I don't really think they've heard our complaints about the copy protected CDs yet. The guys have been so busy for the past few weeks, trying to promote the album. I'm sure the last thing on their minds is how unjust the copy protected thing is.
Besides, it's not like you CAN'T listen to the CD. If you don't own a CD-player, you should've just bought if off iTunes or something.
I blame iPods. They've completely ruined everything. Goddamn technology... screwing us over once again. except not me because I can't be bothered to buy an iPod. quite the pricey little things, aren't they!?
edit - and if they DID know about it, there's no way they're going to be able to get to a computer long enough to sit down and write out an apology letter to their fans. It's only the 3rd day since they've released it [over here, anyway]!! Relax!

The DRM is only applied to Windows PCs and Macs. The XBox can't launch the CD's Autorun DRM software, and therefore is safe from DRM.
If you want to rip it to your PC or Mac, all you have to do is disable autorun (hold down SHIFT for 20 seconds while and after you insert the CD). This will block the DRM from installing.

I just figured out that the shift trick only works if you do it every time you put the cd in your computer. So, if you ever put your cd in the computer without doing the shift trick, it will never work again. so BE SURE TO DO THIS the first time you put the cd in your computer, and rip right away!!! i ripped everything fine and then was experimenting and got the cd skipping sound every time i tried the shift trick after putting in the cd without the shift trick and letting it acquire the licenses.

thats true. but if you made that mistake like i did, then go to system restore & restore your computer to a past date (i.e. the day before you first put in the cd) . then once you did that & your computer restarts, then put the cd back in and do the shift trick. it worked for me so i should work for you.

...for making an album so damn hard to play in anything other than a standard CD player. Like others here, I usually BUY THE ALBUM FIRST and then rip it into my computer so I can listen to it on my mp3 player. You got my $$, why make it such a pain in the ass for me to play it as I choose? If your next album has all this "copy protection" crap, forget it. I won't buy it. Did we somehow forget that people copied vinyl albums onto cassettes back in the day? It's not any different now that we can copy albums via computer. If you want my $$ in the future, you gotta start catering to me. "Copy protection"--hmm...how very capitalist. You guys really should read some Charles Keil and his ideas on the recording industry. I suggest, Mr. Grohl, that you read a book called "Music Grooves," which Keil wrote with Steven Feld.
Not to be entirely negative, the music on IYH, however, is really good...probably better than any of your previous albums.

Wow, I'm amazed that my original post has gotten this much response...
I was able to disable the driver and make a copy of the CD for my car as well as rip the MP3's, thanks everyone...
The thing that I find the most ridiculous about this is that the only thing the copy protection really protects against is the average person making a copy of the CD for their friends. Obviously the MP3's will circulate and the people they're most trying to target (CD piraters?) have and will find their way around it.
I mean, I understand the reasoning for all of this, but I think they're just targeting and punishing the wrong people. Some of the other things they've done have probably helped them out a lot more, such as flooding P2P networks with fake versions of songs, etc. I've found it much harder to download from WinMX these days compared to a year or so ago, and I'm probably more likely now to buy a song or two on iTunes if I can't find it elsewhere.
But the truth is that downloading "illegal" digital music is here to stay... with the popularity of P2P networks decreasing, more people are using torrents, etc... so the music industry needs to embrace this and work with it... I think people want to buy CD's if there's a reason to buy it.
The fact of the matter is... offering CD's for $9.99 and having them come with a bonus DVD, for example, is much more likely to lead people to buy a CD than the ultimate results of copy protection. Somebody has to make the music industry aware of this.

Wow, I don't feel like reading through 8 pages of this......and I apologize if this has been covered.
I've read how to disable the autoplay and the program.....however, I'm running into a problem when trying to rip the songs to put as mp3's on my computer. When I rip the discs, they show up as the same disc/songs. For instance, I ripped disc 1 first.....everything was cool. Then I ripped disc 2, and it "showed up" as disc 1, however the audio was disc 2's audio. So I renamed the disc two files as their correct names, and moved them to where all the rest of my mp3's are. When I just checked them, both "discs" (I have them as separate folders) are the same audio (disc 2) for some reason.
Can't figure out why. I'm going to try to re-rip disc 1 and see what happens.

Here's the problem, every single one of you wants to rip the music and burn copies of it for other uses...I just want to listen to the cd on my computer. PROBLEM: The files the cd does let you listen to are the MP3s streaming from the cd!!
Now what's my problem? I'm a young engineer who enjoys listening to every cd I buy with the FULL QUALITY of CD Audio. Not a cheap mp3 version of it. I want my 44100Hz 16 bit playback. Not a ripped version of it in Windows Media format. Now unfortunately I don't have a pro cd player that I can hook up to my mixing board and my studio monitors, thus I use my computer to play cd's, and it's never been a problem until now.
Instead, I simply opened up Cubase and imported them there. I would suggest finding a file sharing program and download a pro-audio recording program and rip the files from there...if you really want the mp3s, then you can convert them in one of those programs.
I hope there's atleast a few people in here that have the same problem with it that I do. MP3s are NOT good enough for me to listen to the album atleast the first time, and they shouldn't be for any of the rest of you. So here's my opinion, this copy protection idea is great, people shouldn't be copying cd's, but the cd manufacturer needs to let me listen to the full quality cd on my computer!

I had this CD in my hands on Tuesday morning, but seeing the copy protection warning label was all it took for it to go back on the shelf. I won't go into all my reasons - they have been beaten to death in other forums and in this thread. Suffice it to say that I have no intention of illegally distributing anyones music, and I will never illegally download anyone's music. I have bought every other album the Foo Fighters have ever put out, but I think I'll take my fifteen bucks and buy something from an independent artist or label who doesn't view their customers as criminals.
Sony/BMG may or may not have the right to impose these restrictions, I don't know. But in either case they can count one lost sale due to this copy protection.

The thing that pisses me off the most was when I bought the CD, put it into my car CD player, and the fucking thing wouldn't play. I guess my headunit is too high tech for the fucking copy right protection bullshit.
The copy protection relies on the disc being put into a Mac or PC compatible with the Autorun code. Unless your car CD player is a full-fledged Windows PC or Mac (unlikely), it's not the copy protection's fault.
Maybe you should shift while you put it in. (haha i'm so funny)

Your CD wasted hours of my life and advised me as an IPOD user to complain to Apple. That is ridiculous
This has really burned me out. I think I might be done with the Foo.
You were great at JAMPAC near Seattle with the original line up and you were great at the Gorge in WA a few years ago.
Thank you for each of your previous CDs. They all sound great on my IPOD and your music has always had a way of growing on me.

He is right if this is what makes you stop listening to them, i think that is pretty sad. I dont know if anyone has mentioned this, but if you put the cd into your computer you can of course play the music on your computer, but the cds menu options have a copy option which will let you copy the songs to certain files like Windows Media and i think mp3. So i dont see why you guys havent been able to copy or burn it.

This is BS. I buy the CD, and I can't even listen to it. I cannot get it on my minidisc player. Christ, next time, I guess I'll just download the album for free. Illegal? Yes. But it's a lot easier than going throught this. Wow, this is a nice thank you for buying the CD. "Spend $17 and go screw yourself." Thanks. Thanks a lot.

"Under the DMCA it is a felony to (1) circumvent a technical measure such as an encryption lock that copyright owners use to control access to their works or prevent copying of their works, (2) make or distribute a tool that circumvents access controls, or (3) make or distribute a tool that bypasses other technical measures used by copyright owners to protect rights in copyrighted works. 17 USC §§1201, 1204."
So, basically, by "working around" the copy protection, you're committing a felony. And I'm not joking around or exaggerating to make a point.
Not a simple offense, not a misdemeanor, a felony. Just for bypassing the copy protection to rip your Foo CD and put it on an iPod.
Will it be enforced? I doubt it. But can it be ruled out?
(BTW, this applies to the US only. I'm not sure of the specific laws in other countries.)

Hey guys.
Just in case anybody is watching I'd like to mention that today I went to buy the new FF album. I got all the way to the cash before I noticed the copy protection logo. Didn't buy it because as a Mac/iTunes/iPod user I am unable to use the cd as I would normally. I will not send a complaint to Apple about this.
The irony is I still want to hear the album so I'll be ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADING it. Way to go greedy bottom line loving corporate machine.

come on, stop blaming the band for the fucking copy protection. god! have you ever heard of record companies or something like that. i mean they (the record companies) established copy protection (even like the software industry) to decrease illegal sharing (as mp3s) and raise their declining volume of sales.
That would better the problem.....oh wait, or was it the origin ??????????
i agree with you.. it is the record company's fault... not the foos. i don't think i could have said any of that better myself.

By struggling to justify yourself in such a way you just look pathetic and the fact that your 29 and resort to calling a band names because you don't like a decision that has been made, more than likely not by them... more pathetic still!

I'm a huge fan, I'm older than you, and my copy is supposed to be coming via Amazon tomorrow. I'm sending it back unopened. I own thousands of albums and I bought every single one of them. I bought every piece of fucking music on my ipod and if I can't listen to it when I want to and where I want to, I'm not buying it. I won't download a whole album from itunes because I don't feel comfortable without the hard copy as backup. And I like fondling the CD occassionally. I'll probably change my mind in a few months if I hear they fixed this shit.
I appreciate all you people standing up for the band. It's really sweet. But I think it's appropriate to be pissed off at this. Thanks to everyone who posted because otherwise I would have innocently opened the package and then I'd be stuck with it.
I'll still see them live. Many times. They're much better live anyway.
btw, you ipod haters. People with ipods tend to be hard core music fans who live and breathe music. It's really stupid to make them angry. The band and their label should be listening. My music purchases have increased tremendously in the past 3 years because of my ipod.

I was beginning to think that I was the only one that couldn't play my BRAND NEW FREAKIN CDs in my car! I don't know about anyone else, but when I drop $30 on CDs I am ripping through that plastic wrap while walking to my car. It was a great end to a crappy day. Although the album was well worth the drive home to hear, I'm still pretty lit up about not being able to use it in my car. Luckily I had no problem ripping and burning it to a CD-R...but, it's just not the same.
:D to a brilliant album
 to the little black box at the bottom on the back of the cd case stating in fine print that *The audio side of this disc does not conform to CD specifications and therefore not all DVD and CD players will play the audio side of this disc. uh, what good is a CD if it doesn't play in a cd player?!? I know it's not the bands idea or fault. I hope it wan't a foo idea, but I would love to hear what they have to say about all of this. The sad thing is that it affects the actually fans who went out and bought the CD. The people who just took it off the net didn't have to deal with any of this. I was so excited to jam the new tunes in my portable player and soak it in like it did for the older foo discs, but having to deal with all of this just to do that has really put a damper on the whole experience.

There is a pretty simple fix if you are using XP and already loaded the CD.
I looked at the idea to go to Control Panel, but this was easier.
XP has System Restore.
Programs / Accessories / System Restore
From here you can pick a date to restore your system to.
Obviously it has to be before you first loaded IYH.
System Restore will NOT get rid of an.y data, but it does get rid of any programs or drivers you have added after your restore date.
Restore to an earlier date, then doe the Shift trick.
I had the same problem with the jumping songs and they are now all on my iPod.
And for the record I'm 38 and have seen Scream (w/ Dave) Nirvana and Foos.

This deal sucks. What aobut all the peeps who dont know shit about computers, all they want to do is put in a CD to play on their PC while they are at work. This is precisely where I am at. I dont have the fucking time to dick around with drivers, permissions, and all this other crap. I paid for the music, and now I cant listen to it on my pc? Fuck it ill just go get the Un-paid for MP3s off limewire, adn risk getting a virus, just so I can listen to my CD that I PAID for on my PC. Thx for letting someone else fuck up your hard work Foo's.
And why the Fuck are we getting our government involved with our music. That has got to be just about the stupidest move the Music industry could have done. We are sitting here fighting these bastards, trying to rally our fans against the government, and the second profits go down you start siding with them to make sure you get what your owed?
Fuck that!
Funny thing is, the money thing is bullshit, if you like music, you make music. All these whiney bitches that are complaining they dont get enough money for their tunes, fine stop making music and go get a day job if tis not profitable and you can make more money that way.
No?
Yeah...i didnt fuckin think so.
Heres a clue to anyone important who may read this, to quote Princess leigha "The more you tighten your grip the more things will slip through your fingers". Same with music, just watch, as it gets worse, more and more people are turnig to pirated music. I am totally against it, but hell, now I have to get the pirated version just to listen to it on my PC.

Ummm just a thought...
Does it seem odd to anyone else who is freaking out screaming the band is in it all for money. That...well...I dunno...the only country with protection on it is the one where the government is involved in EVERYTHING!
I mean c'mon think logically here. If the band wanted to prevent copies it would have inforced this protection worldwide...and not just in the good old U S of A. Obviously if everyone else from around the world is doing fine with theirs it's something other then a band's approach.
bond007ca2...get over it. Stop thinking you have a right to say something to someone based on age for the simple reason you followed the band since 'Nam. Oh and just for kicks:
June 21, 2004. Velvet Revolver's new release Contraband, which topped U.S. album sales charts this week, contains anti-copying software from SunnComm that is substantially similar to the earlier version of the technology described in this report. The E.U. release of this album contains Macrovision CDS-200 copy prevention technology, not the SunnComm CD3 system described in this paper. The Japanese release does not appear to contain any copy protection.

Cos would put in errors (like glitches, etc) that a new CD player could fix upon playback...but cause a PC to hickup and take a dump. well, we use these on our computers too. and well, our minidisc players, etc.
I think the foo fans aren't dicks that copy and bootleg their albums.....and well, to be honest Big Record Comapny, you need to stop suing the kids and worry about those Chinese guys overseas...am I right or am I right?
but anyway...if you put the CD in your DVD player you can send the audio to your PC and record new, unprotected wav files....from which to do as you please.
It is indeed a pain in the butt that we have to do that...
Im going to look into some other software programs like "exact audio copy" ...supposidly in the past they were able to defeat copy-protection measures.
so that is the ned result. copy-protected CDs and CD Rippers that can over-ride the protections.....so basically the record companies are spending money on something that is ultimately defeated.
You know what? i hear bands make their millions off of T-shirts...and the rec. co's make their money off of CDs....so if you wanted to hurt the band, start making your own foo t-shirts...
God knows I am tired of the $25 T-shirt....ha ha...I've got a friend in Illinois who works at dunham's sports...he runs the T-shirt printing press...you should see the shirts he's made me. I kid you not, better than the bands cheap cloth and paint that wears off in a few years. These shirts I have had made just seem to last forever.
I will be buying the album soon...ha ha....I wanna get the deluxe edition. I heard the UK version has bonus tracks...but there also is a US version w/ DVD....so Ill have to buy it twice! soo...thanks foos!
I think if the fans got more songs on a disc....more content for their cash, you'd see less mp3s and CDRs...

because here in the US they are putting copy protection on cds.
oh well... i'll just steal my music from now on. if the bands want to prevent the fans from listening to the cd to how they want too even though the fan buys the cd then why bother.

The very first post in this thread gives an accurate description of how to get past the protection. You have to go through and deactivate the driver (you have to click the stop button, then switch tabs and disable) at which time it will prompt you to restart your computer. If you don't see the driver on the list, as I didn't the first time, just reboot. When your computer is coming back on after the driver's disabled, you could (if you wanted to) go back to the list in the device manager and the driver should have a red X through it. At this point in time, insert either CD WHILE HOLDING SHIFT. I'm not sure of how long to hold it exactly, but just count off 20 seconds or so to be safe. If you don't hold shift at this step, MediaMax or whatever it's called will still run.
After putting in the first CD, with driver disabled and shift key held and now released, open up iTunes or Windows Media Player (it works for either one) and you should now be able to rip the songs without skips. They'll be titled "track 1," "track 2," etc., so just rename them and put in all the info you desire.

I had the same problem, but I found a solution. When I put the disk in my computer, the foo fighters DVD type thing would pop up, and that seemed to play the music fine. I ripped the music to my computer using that program, and it was put into windows media format. From there, I used windows media to burn it to a cd. Then from those cd's I imported it to Itunes, and it worked lol. So I have it on my ipod now, try that.

When you copy the files like the website said, they're in DRM format right? Because if thats the case its really easy to convert them to mp3.

well you have the album so why do you need a copy version. why dont you just take the album into the car to listen to it. Yer you can copy it on windows media 10. Yer that is easly to change them into MP3 from DRM format. but how exactly would you do that. It worked when you copy the album onto your IPod. That was copyed using itunes.

Don't be sorry. It's fucking ridiculous. Check this out:
- I bought from Best Buy to get the bonus, The Sign.
- They imply from the ad that you get a code and download the free track with no obligations.
- I find out after purchase, from the instructions inside, that I first have to fucking install Napster, which I fucking hate to begin with.
- Then you still can't put in a code... instead you have to fucking give them a credit card number so that they can bill you after a 7-day free trial, at $10 a month.
- As pissed off as I am, I do it anyway, just to get the "free" fucking song.
- I get the song, and it is .wma format and it's copy-protected so I can't xfer it to MP3 and can't put it on my fucking mp3 player!
- After all this, I luckily remember to cancel my Napster acct. so I don't get ass-raped for the next 9 months which would have cost me $90 for 1 bonus "free" track, and then I uninstall that fucking software because I hate it.
- Then I go to play my bonus track and get a motherfucking popup that it cannot play because it does not detect an internet connection! What the fuck is that?? Why the FUCK should I have to be connected to the internet to play my motherfucking bonus track????
- It gets worse!! So I connect and try to play the motherfucking song again, and now I get another popup that it can't fucking play BECAUSE IT DOES NOT DETECT THAT NAPSTER IS INSTALLED!! WHY THE MOTHERFUCK DO I NEED NAPSTER INSTALLED FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE TO HEAR ONE MOTHERFUCKING BONUS TRACK! Jesus fucking christ!!!!

hey everyone....sorry to say i don't know too much about getting around copy protection but,
1) some guy i know stuck the cd's into his laptop and his drive totally ignored the protection, he ripped the cd's into mp3 format no problem, so maybe just try using some other pc's or laptops if you have access
2) if you can rip the cd's into .wma format use those files to make a new .cda cd (just a regular cd), then re-rip that cd into .mp3 format (as this new cd will not have copy protection), you can then import those mp3's into iTunes and stick them on your ipods
best of luck

then they put up a new album player on the web

Just bought the new Foo's CD thinkin' I was going to enjoy myself for the next week by not having to change my Winamp playlist at all after I rip both CDs to my computer. No such luck once I experience this fucking "right protection" bullshit. Last I checked I already had the "right" to listen to music once I bought a CD. It's shit like this that makes me want to drop my morals about pirating music. Fuck you FBI! Fuck you RIAA! Fuck you cheap ass record company! Fuck your "Anti-Pirating" and "Right Protection" bullshit! Is this the length that people will go to to make that extra buck? All I want to do is listen to one of my favorite bands without another thought or hassle... hope you guys agree.
BTW has anyone tried the thing someone suggested about ripping them as wma files using the autoplay program, burning those as another CD, and then ripping that CD in mp3 format? If so, does it work? I got me plenty of CD-Rs if it does :)

Aha! It does work! Just have to make sure the wma files are NOT checked read only files in the file's properties when you burn them. Once you rip them the second time you will have to rename them but you will have your NON-RIGHT PROTECTED Foo MP3s on your computer free for you to do what you want with them :D

I believe there is one with a bonus DVD, but I assume it's the same content that's on the DualDisc version of the album. And, being from the UK, the DVD would be in PAL format, so it may or may not play on your DVD player.
BTW, i copied the CD's when first inserting them, using thier popup...autorun...thing, saved it to my music file, open the file, sent each song over to windows media player 10, burned them... and they work. No popping or scratching or skipping.
Keep in mind that burning discs that way give you a lower quality copy of the disc. The protected files aren't full-CD quality.

 to the little black box at the bottom on the back of the cd case stating in fine print that *The audio side of this disc does not conform to CD specifications and therefore not all DVD and CD players will play the audio side of this disc. uh, what good is a CD if it doesn't play in a cd player?!? Brilliant.
DualDisc isn't a CD format. It's closer to a DVD. Philips (who owns the patent to the CD) refused to allow the record companies to refer to it as a CD because it fails CD qualifications. For starters, it's thicker than a typical CD, which is why it fails in some (especially car) cd players.
Frankly, I'm not a fan. I'd rather they put CDs and DVDs separately in one package. But the record companies decided that this was an easier way to convince people to buy music.
"Sony BMG's new copy-protection effort comes with at least one downside: PC users are unable to transfer the songs to Apple's popular iPod portable music player, because Apple has declined to make its software compatible with Microsoft's Windows Media digital rights management (DRM) system."
Dear iPod users,
It is Apples fault.
Love,
Me.
Garbage. Why should Apple license DRM from Microsoft? How would that help them at all? If anything, Suncomm should be forced to license Apple's DRM.
The quote above is Suncomm's spin on it, because it would certainly make their lives easier (read: wouldn't cost them a dime) if Apple suddenly made the iPod WMA-compatible. But there's no justifiable reason that Apple should be forced to do it. The iPod is the top selling device - it should be Suncomm making the concessions to make it work.
Apple's DRM works just as effectively as Microsoft's. Suncomm should use it. Problem solved.

If artists do not make it easier for law abiding people to listen to purchased music on a computer, than you are just asking for people to rip off your music. I'm a former musician who has never downloaded a single track of music from the web. I enjoy owning CD's and value the artists I patron. But, this anti-piracy BS is just beyond frustrating. Can't play your CD on my work computer. I purchased Velvet Revolver and the new Dave Matthews both were un-playable in a computer, Foo fighters now join the above ranks of bands I will not continue to patron. BMG and its artists and anti-piracy BS can go F#$% yourself.

CD COPY PROTECTION: If you can't get round it, you're an idiot.
And if you do get around it, you're committing a felony. But I commend your for your exemplary attitude on the matter.
Well, that would probably explain my issues. Does this mean that the version that does not have the DVD option passes CD qualifications?
Yep - the standard version should work just fine. (Other than the copy protection issues.)
Although, actually, I'm not sure what the copy protection does in terms of sticking to CD qualifications. Technically, it's not a CD - it's more of a CD-ROM, since the copy protection programming takes precedent, but there may be some "red book" (cd specs) loophole.

Exactly.
Back in the day when audio cassettes became available, one would purchase an LP on vinyl, take it home, transfer it to audio cassette, shelf the vinyl for home use, and take the cassette into the car for travelling. The industry not only made money on blank cassettes but created a secondary pre-recorded cassette market where you could go to the store and by a recording on both vinyl and cassette if you didn't feel like taping it at home yourself.
Now suddenly, buying a CD and transferring it onto an iPOD for travel, while shelfing the CD, is a FEDERAL Crime.
F*ck*ng Outrageously Petty and ridiculous. The INDUSTRY is simply PROTECTING THE DISTRIBUTION CHAIN (of physical media) until the can effectively make money off electronic media without those who are left out of the loop complaining (those who make the cd itself, the booklets, the jewel cases, etc.)
If the bands all have renegotiated contracts to get paid the proper royalties for .mp3s (per song), and that amount is equal to or greater than the per CD royalty, and we bought one or the other, what frickin difference does it make if we download an mp3 and stick it onto a CD for traveling or buy a CD and stick it onto a hard drive or ipod? Either way, we paid.

I just wanted to add my .2 cents to the conversation. I know it's probably all been said before, but typing a few words onto this board that no one that can do anything about anything will probably read might make me feel better.
This is the 4th Foo Fighters cd I have bought and paid for. I have been a fan and have spent my hard earned money to listen to the band whenever I want. I have an MP3 playing CD-player in my car. They released 2 cd's in one. All I want to do is put both cd's onto 1 mp3 cd, so I don't have to bother ejecting and getting out a new cd while I'm going 70 MPH down the highway listening to them.
When will bands realize that they are only alienating their own PAYING customers. The people who are obtaining this music illegally will continue to do so, and no amount of copy protection will stop them - face it. However, the people like me, who have purchased this cd legally that are so upset now that I can't use the cd within my Fair Use rights that I will not be buying another cd by them ever, I will not be going to their concerts, and I will not be buying their t-shirts. So they haven't lost any money from people who were never giving them money in the first place, but they have pissed off the people who were giving them money to the point where they won't be giving them money any longer.. don't you see? Who's the genius that thought up this stunt?
Stop being scared of technology. Stop being scared of the future. And stop upsetting those that support you, when you aren't even frustrating those who are stealing from you and will continue to do so no matter what sort of "protection" you think you have.

So, because Micro$oft don't support Sony Minidisc players, I cannot put the Foo on my player. I've had the CD the day it came out, and have only listened to it two or three times - on a regular CD player - which I hardly ever use.
Complete horseshit. I think I'll illegally download albums from now on. A lot less hastle.
I cannot understand why we, the ones who bought the fucking CD, are being punished. Go after the people who download, not the ones who buy the fucking music.

This copy protected CD crap is a good way to punish fans. I don't own a CD player - I have iTunes and my iPod. This CD is useless to me because I can't listen to it with that format. I buy CDs to support great bands instead of getting them the illegal way and all I get is harrassed by something I just spent 18 bucks on. It's a waste of money, and frankly I'm frustrated enough right now to return it. We didn't steal this music, we bought it, so don't punish us! Argghh.

I read the first 8 pages trying to figure out how to copy the discs to my IPOD, as I never use a CD player, and then stopped. I hope I am not repeating someone else, but I was able to get the songs from a North American CD onto my Ipod by using "audiograbber" and downloading a better MP3 encoder called "LAME" and using it as a plug in for an external/internal encoder under the MP3 settings. Both are available from this site if you follow the links...
http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/
I am by no means an audiophile, but they sound good (file size is large though).. here are the stats from one of the songs if it means anything to anyone...
45MB
1411 kbps
44.100 kHz
I couldn't figure out how to get that driver file thing figured out, but as i type, my Ipod is pumpin the foo. It took a little figuring but it is worth it.
Again, my apologies if this is repetitive.
redwingsfan13
June 22nd 2005, 07:01 AM
for my above post, you can decrease the file sizes by not using the "LAME" encoder and just sticking with the default, but file size is really small....some less than 1MB and only 128 bit rate, but whatever works i guess.

This is a letter I sent to the foo fighters:
First of all let me say as a musician I have nothing but respect for the Foo Fighters and Dave in particular. However, I'm disturbed by some hypocrasy that I have recently been exposed to. I dont' mean to be hard but I know that when Dave was interviewed about the legal litigations over the rights to Nirvana recordings heswas filmed saying that the arguments over money and rights was everything his band was originaly against. I humbly ask Dave if this stance has changed?
What I base my concern on is the new software placed on the new Foo fighters cd. I know that you most likely have recived a lot of complaints form people who make a hobby out of ripping cd's and uploading the mp3s to others. Let me register a concern form a musician who does not share mp3's with others. While I strongly belive that the recent battle over music downloading is partially the music industries fault for refusing to adapt. The truth is that music is moving to a era where the middle man known as lables will most likelybe removed and the mp3 line is where the battle has been drawn. I think in the future music will be more free and musicians will make the majority of their money touring and not selling records. The internet will become the main tool for building up audiences for tours and not cd's.
However, because of my respect for fellow musicans I refuse to share my music. I do however convert all my cd's to mp3 format and place them on my computer and have over 40 gigabites of music on my computer right now. I then create play list, upload to my ipod and burn new cd's for my car as much as I want. I even send mp3's to my office computer. I belive that I have the right to do what I want with my purchases as long as laws are not broken. Why is it then the new foo fighters cd limits my freedom? Is this what the band is truly about now? Has Dave and the rest of the Foo Fighters joined fellow bands like Metallica and Velvet Revolver in forgeting that fans are as important if not more so than lables?
I don't mind having to use your software to download digital versions of the music but they should still not be limited in their applications...aka I PODs...etc. True Rock is not supposed to be about money but about emotion, great music and a little rebelion. Now let me step down from the soap box and just let me say I've always though of Dave and the rest of the band as amazing musicians and while I am angry about this I stilll love you guys and hope you continue to be sucessful. I would love a responce from the band and Dave...thank you for your time.

Sounds like something got screwed up. That's a WAV file right there, not an MP3. That particular file didn't go through LAME at all. (Though LAME is definitely better than the internal Audiograbber codec, if it's still BladeEnc.)
BTW - food for thought. The Foos missed having a #1 record this week by 12,000 units, with sales of 310,000. Might that many have put the record back because of the copy protection?

What is the best encoder to use for this type of application? I figured out why the files are so big....i left the setting as "grab to: WAV file" instead of "direct rip to MP3".
Any help on getting better sound quality would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Well, honestly, assuming the WAVs are direct rips of the CD, you're not going to get any better sound quality. But you'll fill up your iPod pretty quickly. :)
Honestly, I would just take the WAVs you've got and grab something like WinLAME (http://winlame.sourceforge.net/). (Usually, I use EAC (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) to rip to WAV, then WinLAME to encode to MP3.) The alt-standard preset on WinLAME should work well for you.
If you're feeling daring, I usually use "default" setting and set it to 192kbps constant bitrate / Stereo with a 19500 Hz lowpass filter. (That'll make more sense when you see the settings page.)
But I think LAME is the best MP3 codec out there, save for possibly the professional Fraunhofer codec. But LAME is free, and the difference between the two is negligible.
Oh, and for anyone still paying attention:

As I was driving to work, I kept thinking about it, and I doubt this very much. I bet the turn-downs were probably more in the 1,000-2,000 range.

i bought the cd/dvd combo yesterday but only now notice that there's an asterisk next to the cd audio side that directs one to some fine print saying that "the audio side of this disc does not conform to CD specifications and therefore not all DVD and CD oplayers will play the audio side of this disc".
i don't want to open it to find out if it will work in my players cause then i can't exchange it.
anyone here know what this is about?

Have you tried Audiograbber (http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/)? Never had a problem ripping any copy protected discs, and if I have, there are a couple of options in there that usually cure it. You need to grab an mp3 codec such as lame (http://mitiok.free.fr/) but it includes a wma codec. And it's now freeware, which is nice!

Copying This To A Cd Was Simple. If You Bought Your Cd At Best Buy There Is A Code For You To Get The Song "the Sign". If You Download The Napster Client Like It Specifies Then You Are Almost There. Once The Napster Client Is Installed All You Need To Do Is Open Napster And Do The Following:
Put Your "in Your Honor" Cd In Your Computer. Cancel Out Of All The Different License Bs Things That Pop Up. Then In Napster Go To Import Tracks And Select All The Tracks On The Cd. Napster Will Then Import The Tracks Into It's Playlist. From There You Will See A Burn Icon At The Bottom Of The Screen. Click On That Then Drag All The Files From The Playlist To The Burn Section At The Bottom Of The Screen. From There The Songs Will Start To Burn Onto Your Blank Cd And In No Time You Will Have A Clean Version With No Skips Or Anything. Sounds Just Like The Store Bought Copy.

If you have an iPod, that's your problem.
If you can't get past the copy protection, that's your problem.
How can the band be held responsible if you bough a music player from a company that actually refused to make their software compatible with the copy protection software? They actually told Sony where to go to force people to buy copy protected CDs from iTunes. Blame Apple, they're the one who won't let you copy it.

That is the most retarded logic I've seen this week.
If the band had stopped BMG from putting copy protection on the disc, we wouldn't be having this problem. Period. Everybody would be able to do exactly what they've always done.
It should have been Suncomm's responsibility to license Apple's DRM, not for Apple to open their DRM to "let" Suncomm use it. If Suncomm couldn't provide support for the iPod, Sony/BMG shouldn't have licensed their copy protection. This is Sony/BMG's bad idea, and the band should have stopped it before it happened.
Let me make this clear: the iPod existed before Suncomm released this version of their copy protection. It was THEIR responsibility, not Apple's, to make sure it was compatible. Their claim that Apple is stopping iPod compatibility is simply corporate spin.
Sony/BMG is basically punishing people who actually go to the store and buy music. And it looks like they're aware of it. How ridiculous is it when a company is telling people how to get around the copy protection that THEY put on the disc?!?
BTW - anyone just arriving to this thread should go back and read some of the pages before adding their two cents. There's a lot of repetition here, especially in the last few pages.

June 26th 2005, 02:31 AM
It's not retarded logic it's fact, Apple could easily release a patch to allow it to copy, they refuse because that'll mean they don't get any money from the sales.
Maybe Sony/BMG shouldn't have actually licensed the copy protection, but they did, the band haven't had a chance to deal with a petty issue like copy protection, they're too busy touring and promoting the album. Also, why would Sony, who have their own line of MP3 player, want to let Suncomm to licence Apples DRM? They're both corporations. Sony don't want people to use iPods, why should they or Suncomm be forced to pay for a rival DRM? Answer: They shouldn't Apple, should be giving the rights away to ensure their users can copy the CDs like everyone else can, so who's at fault? Sony - who make their own MP3 players that aren't linked to a specific transfer software and want to limit competition, Suncomm - who were only licensed to make the software or Apple - who are doing nothing to sort the problem for their users? Go ask Apple why they won't so anything, they tell me what they say. I bet it'll just be "Sony are our rivals, we're not going to let them use out software, they sould be for it" That makes them as bad as Sony/BMG really, exactly the same.
Whatever way you look at it, blaming the band it retarded logic because they don't have anything to do with making and publishing the CDs.

Whatever way you look at it, blaming the band it retarded logic because they don't have anything to do with making and publishing the CDs.
FYI - "the band" includes their management, whose responsibility it is to know that this shit is happening. The Foos' management were certainly aware of what Sony was planning, else they weren't doing their jobs. It's their responsibility to know the details about releases, down to the minutiae.
I said this about ten pages ago, and it's still true:
1) If the band knew, they should have stopped it. As successful an act as they are, they would have had the power.
2) If the band didn't know, but their management did, then their management should be fired.
3) If their management didn't know, their management should be fired.
But I believe the band and their management knew. That they allowed this to happen borders on incompetence. They're punishing the fans who actually went to the record store to buy the album, and are simultaneously encouraging people to download the album illegally. Copying CDs for personal use is LEGAL under US fair use rights, and using a CD hack to stop it is simply unacceptable.
I wouldn't have a problem with this if we were talking about a DVD. The DVD format accomodates copy protection. Every DVD player manufactured after the standard was established can handle copy protection. But that's not true for CDs. You can't retroactively add copy protection to the CD format without potentially conflicting with all of the thousands (if not millions) of CD players manufactured to match the established copy-protection-free CD standard.
Any CD containing copy-protection is DEFECTIVE BY DESIGN. They do not conform to CD standards, and it is impossible to guarantee that people will be able to play them in their CD players, which would be guaranteed if the discs conformed to the CD standard. That's why the standards exist, and why Philips refused to grant permission for DualDiscs to be referred to as CDs. The entire point of the standard is to ensure that a purchased CD will play on any CD player.
When people purchase a CD, they should be 100% guaranteed that it will function as a standard CD should. That discs are being sold which cannot carry that guarantee is fucking ridiculous.
If they want a CD that includes copy protection, they should come up with a new CD-like format that accomodates it and start selling players that conform to the new standard. They could then choose to stop selling the regular CD and make the discs only available in the new format. But that will never happen, since the record companies and component manufacturers know that nobody would ever willingly subject themselves to that, just like Sony couldn't convince people to buy their "mp3" players that could only play protected formats (ie, not MP3s).
You're singling out the iPod issues, but those are the barest minimum of the problem.
BTW - I'll note only that I find it entirely hypocritical that the overwhelming majority of people insulting those who are upset are from places where IYH was released WITHOUT COPY PROTECTION. That goes for ANYONE in the UK. You don't have issues with the disc because you don't have to deal with the problem.
If I were able to purchase the CD at a local store without copy protection, I wouldn't be writing in this thread right now. And that's the honest truth.

I understand what you're saying, I don't think music should ever be copy protected, it's a pain in the ass for the consumer and the artist, but if you look at how busy they have been since before the album was released and will be for the next few month, I'd love to know how they would have known about it, basically, I'd say it's a management error who are supposed to take care of issues like that when the band can't, they've obviously messed up in this case.
Obviously, there was no dual disc version over here, but was there a normal two CD set with copy protection or was there only dual disc?
If it was only dual disc, that's a hell of a fuck up considering how hard it is to play the things, and if there is copy protection on a normal CD version, that's just wrong and probably illegal.

What I hate is the fact that the people who have versions with copy protection on seem to think that people in the UK have some sort of immunity and albums aren't released here with copy protection. I don't go bitching on the band's message board and go shooting my mouth off about how the management should be fired for it and how everyone involved are incompetent.
Here's another reality check for you. I have more issues with CDs than most people, probably even you. Some CDs I go out and buy with my own good money won't even play on my CD player these are usually ones with enhanced CD. So I have no choice but to play them on my computer. I can't listen to them on my own CD or on my portable CD player. I don't mind people who can't play them at all complaining, but if you can play the album on a regular CD player, quit whining.

Look, this is precisely the right time to make a big deal about this. At this point in time, copy protection on CDs is NOT entrenched in America, as it's only been tried a handful of times. In fact, the main reason that Sony/BMG is "testing" this is because it was "apparently successful" on Velvet Revolver's release. "Apparently successful" translates to this: a bunch of people bought the CD, and few made a big deal about the copy protection issues.
In other words, if people DON'T make a big deal about this, more and more CDs will be copy protected, more and more people will have problems playing the CDs, and more and more people will be driven away from buying music. The record labels will cite piracy as being the big problem, completely aware and yet ignoring the fact that they were partly responsible for the problem.
I KNOW that the UK has discs with copy protection. There are several import discs that I passed on buying because of the copy protection. But I'll say the same thing: I firmly believe if more people had made a big deal about it and hadn't just "sucked it up", there would be fewer copy protected discs in Europe (and worldwide).
I said what I said because you rather crassly belittled people who complained about the problems that you didn't have:

Yeah, but the problem with that is that it's virtually impossible to get the DVD out with damaging the packaging because its:
card slip (DVD), digipac (Disc 1), digipac (Disc 2), card slip (booklet).
The card slip on the DVD is on open at one side and the side is too close to the plastic digipack cd holder for the disc to come out.

I see your point. But when people are coming on here saying that management should be sacked because of this, that's not fair. If it's an experiment then it doesn't really have that much to do with teh management. It would be advantageous to management if copy protection worked. If you could just put copy protected music on your iPod it kind of defeats the point of it.

If you managed a band, and your band's label came to you and said, "We'd like to 'experiment' with your band's next release", what would your answer be?
I know what I'd say to that. It's the same thing any responsible manager would say. "We care about our fans, and we don't think this is something that will benefit them in the slightest. No thanks."
Copy protection doesn't do shit for management. It doesn't actually help the labels, even if they believe it does. Sony's having to resort to telling people how to get around it, so what was the fucking reason for putting it on there in the first place?
And you're still missing the bigger point: iPods are the minimum of this problem. Copy protected CDs fail in many CD players, and is a misguided attempt to stop people from doing what (in the US) they are LEGALLY allowed to do: make copies for personal use.
The money that the labels are currently wasting on copy protection would be far better spent on PSAs and advertisements that would put societal pressure on people who freely copy and distribute CDs (illegally) to their friends. Most people don't have qualms about duping CDs or downloading because they don't see it as a problem. Convince those people that it's a problem, and they'll let up. Treat them as criminals (by assuming they're going to commit piracy) and all you do is give them justification for their behavior.

I don't think that "just burning" a cd is really this issue that people are upset about. Some people can't open the music at all on there pc or even download the music on there computer. Also, the cd can't even be transferred into an ipod so in reality, the company really screwd over the consumer.

If you buy it at Best Buy, most likely it won't be copy protected. Just shop around for one without the sticker since they're clearly marked.

I had the same problems as alot of people are having with this new album, but then I discovered this site
http://license.sunncomm2.com/licacqurl.asp (http://)
and ever since I followed the instructions I have had no problems. But I will say one thing, I haven't tried putting the songs on an mp3 player yet.

I think this copy protected thing is SHIT.
i can't believe they actually went in that story.
ps: all my copy protected cds which i transferred to my pc have played fine. i guess it's protected against cd to cd copies or whatever?
well, it's useless anyways..
and it won't stop ppl from selling copies out there.. the only thing that stops it is the conscience of the people who buy it.

If you have autorun disabled on your cd-rom drive, most copy protected discs will behave like they're not copy protected.

I was happy to see your new cd come out and went out to get the sale price 9.95 and the local store - all sold out. Got a rain check and went back today and the guy at the store told be about the copy protection. I only listen to music on my iPod - don't even own a cd player other that the one on my computer. So I didn't get it. Went to iTunes - 17.99 to download without any packaging.
Bottom line - why make it so difficult and/or expensive to get your music. I'd expect it from Metallica but FF?

hey- I wish I didn't pay 36 dollars to the web site for the "DELUXE" edition. Foos are my favorite but this thing came in a paper envelope that scratches it everytime I get the disks out. I'm really anal about my CD file and this thing does not fit on my rack. Foo Fighters have always been my favorite band. Since the beginning. Dave is my guy. But if you could make it fit on my rack with One by One why not now?? And the extras were better. I feel marketed

I Bought the new Foo and the new Coldplay. I was only able to load the Coldplay Cd on to my iPod and my mp3 player I use to run. I have not listened to the new cd since I first bought it. It is too annoying to carry around a cd Player and my MP3 does not play wma's. Ant what is up with the 128 bit rate. I like to rip at a min. of 192 bit.

that's not really nice to say about the foo fighters, i'm sure it wasn't entirely their decision to make it copyrighted, and i doubt that's the right kind of thing to say on a board that has thousands of foo fans.. besides, my copy of IYH rips/burns/sounds fine!

Yeah its just alittle more techinical. Copy Protection to this degree is an infringment of User Rights normally..but lets just say you were to open up your browser and grab your credit card and go to allofmp3.com
And lets just say they happen to have in your honour there, and you could download the tracks in MP3 or WMA or AAC or M4A format for lets just say 1.45
The mp3s will hit the internet in a while. Its not that hard to bypass.

Simple, am I privileged to do so, no. Call me an an ASSHOLE, I see you as you are. They still suck for doing this. People say, "oh they didn't do it, it's the record co.".... What they don't control what they produce at this point? I understand if they were walking in as a nobody. I understand if they were waking in as Nirvana as a nobody, and a pimp wanted to them to be there whore. But this is ridiculous. Also it was a post for:
Apple
Roxio Toast
etc.
P.S.
Apparently people do care about this subject otherwise ther wouldn't be so many posts about it....

FUCK YOU. "FAN"WHOSOLDTHEWORLDI was almost ready to type out a long winded retort, but frankly, it's a waste of my time to write it and yours to read it.
Free Music Industry pointer: a band (no matter how "powerful") has no control over their recordings once they are in the hands of the record company, that's why they have a record company to deal with the recordings in "the best interests of the band".
And I do apologise for calling you an asshole, I was a little bit pissed off when I was writing that.

Wait you bitch, you posted this at the beginning of this whole tirade. FUCK YOU EVEN MORE "FAN"WHOSOLDTHEWORLD

That was before I had my copy which I learned didn't have copy protection, so I had no reason to be pissed off, I still stand but downloading the album if you've bought it though, since you are legally allowed to own a back up of anything you own.

When at work, I use a laptop to listen to CD's. I stuck this CD into my laptop (Sony S360), and actually hit Accept (something I don't normally do on blind faith). This popped up some error dialog.
I then tried to play it in Windows Media Player and got that skipping sound.
How very annoying. I tried to play by the rules. I will follow all the links and figure this out, but I'm not really sure why I should be bothered.
Just wanted to add my name to the list of people not really happy with all of this BS. I've heard all of this "don't blame the artists" stuff before (mostly in regard to SafeDisc problems on PC software), and every time I hear someone say that it carries a little less weight each time...

Wow, i'm listening to the album right now on my Creative Zen Micro. Wow, I even ripped it and transferred it on my friends' computer . . . which is totally foreign to me. I didn't even have the official cable to transfer with. I don't even have the CD's at my house. I left them at my friends house.
This is how EASY it is to rip this album. I can do it, on my friends' computer, without bringing the cord round or anything.
EASY.

Glad you had zero problems.
I couldn't even listen to the CD on my laptop though, and I've listened to a lot of CD's on that thing. Wonder what the problem might be?
In any event, I don't have time to mess with it now, so I'll listen to one of the other CD's I bought yesterday (without issue).
