Ok, new season (well, now that the World Cup's finished) and a few people have mentioned that the almighty old thread was loading rather slowly so - here we are, a new thread. :)

*

I fully expect the Police to become involved with what happened with Zidane last night (NOTE: see my avatar :D) and too with Materazzi if it's true that he said something racist towards ZZ. Don't see what he could have said with him being white and all but he has been racially abused before apparently and reacted in a similarly thuggish way.

World Cup 2006 Quiz:

Best Moment: Maybe Lahm's goal? What a way to open the scoring.

Worst Moment: Zidane last night. What an utter prick.

Funniest Moment: Graham Poll and his three yellow cards. :D

Best Player: Seeing as Zidane blew it last night, it has to be Cannavaro.

Worst Player: Well, in terms of expectancy/skill versus actual performance, Ronaldinho and Fatpard have to be right up there.

Best Young Player: Lukas Podolski.

Best Manager: Guus Hiddink.

Worst Manager: Jose Peckerman, his pathetic substitutions knocked the best team of the entire tournament out.

Best Match: Portugal vs Holland, aka, The Cardfest!!

Worst Match: Ukraine vs Switzerland.

So Brasil won something afterall:

Brazil and Spain share FIFA Fair Play Award

Brazil and Spain have been chosen by the FIFA Technical Study Group (TSG) as the joint winners of the FIFA Fair Play Award for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, after picking up a total of 886 points from the 1,000 available.
The FIFA Fair Play Award is given to the team with the best record of Fair Play, sportsmanship and good conduct both on and off the pitch, according to a points system and criteria established by the FIFA Committee for Ethics and Fair Play.

Every single game at the tournament is evaluated according to these criteria, but only teams which reach the Round of 16 are considered eligible for the prize. The squads will share the prestigious FIFA Fair Play Trophy, plus receive medals for each member of its playing and coaching staff, a certificate, and a voucher for 50,000 US dollars worth of sporting material to be used in youth development. The evaluation is carried out according to six criteria which place an emphasis on the positive rather than the negative aspects of a team’s performance.

The number of cards a team receives is the only way that points can be deducted. The other criteria taken into consideration are: Positive Play, with points awarded for an attractive, offensive-minded playing style; respect for opponents; respect for the officials; Behaviour of the coaching staff and the Behaviour of supporters.

Third success for Brazil
For the third time in the history of the award, the Brazilian national team can take pride in having won the FIFA Fair Play Award. That said, the Auriverde’s fanatical supporters would have clearly preferred their team to repeat their magnificent double from USA 1994, the Seleção taking home both the FIFA Fair Play Award and the FIFA World Cup Trophy. While Brazil may have shown only rare glimpses of their renowned jogo bonito here on German soil, they cannot be accused of not playing fair. Leading by example was Canarinho defender Lucio, who went more than four games without conceding a single free-kick. The Bayern Munich centre-back committed his first foul in his side’s quarter-final defeat against France.

Spain leave their Furia at home
Luis Aragones’ flamboyant Spanish side may have ended up heading home earlier than expected after their flying start to this summer's showpiece tournament, but at least they can take some consolation from winning the FIFA Fair Play Award for the very first time. Widely known in footballing circles as La Furia Roja (The Red Fury), Xavi and Co channelled their aggression into playing an open, expansive style of football, teamed with the very highest standards of sportsmanship. La Selección received just six cards in their four games here at Germany 2006. Strangely enough, three of these cards were shown to members of Aragones’ second-string side deployed in the Spaniards’ final group game against Saudi Arabia.
Previous winners
Korea/Japan 2002: Belgium
France 1998: England and France
USA 1994: Brazil
Italy 1990: England
Mexico 1986: Brazil

Now on to what is clearly the most important discussion in this thread:

What exactly did Materazzi say to Zidane?

Now clearly we have to enter the relm of wild speculation here, but I think a safe bet would be:

"I want to feel you, deep inside me."

The rumours going around are something about calling his sister a whore.

Materazzi tries three times to wind him, the first two Zidane laughs them off, the third just did it. I dont think Zidane really realised what had been said, you can see the moment when it clicks.

And how are your paté-making skills?

i've heard that it's a racist comment, the only thing i can think of would be that Zidane is muslim (possibly?)

All I can find about Zidane is:

- Of Kabyle Algerian descent.
- His name is Arabic, so some Arabic descent there.
- There used to be rumours that his Father was a "harki" aka a Muslim Algerian but the term was used by some Muslims to mean "collaborator" when they remained pro-French.

So, yeah... maybe he ragged on his Muslimness and called him a "harki" or something.

I loved the shots at the match of Zidane walking in past the cup. Serves him fucking right.

Ok. This is possibly the most amusing world cup related story I've heard.

Police in Berlin have arrested two men suspected of planting nine footballs filled with concrete across the city, each with a message in English challenging passers-by: "Can u kick it?" Three people gave it their best shot and immediately wished they hadn't bothered.

How funny is that!!! :D

More seriously...

Manchester United are going back to the banks to allow the Glazer family to re-finance their debts with a plan to take out a new £500m loan secured against future ticket sales at Old Trafford.

So it's started then. The Glazers are going to bleed them dry.

And here it comes...

France defender William Gallas has called the Italians 'cheats', after his team's World Cup final defeat to the Azzurri on Sunday.

Les Bleus captain Zinedine Zidane was correctly dismissed for a head-butt on Marco Materazzi in an off-the-ball incident in Berlin.

But a bitter Gallas has controversially moved to defend his team-mate and alleged that Marcello Lippi's team used underhand tactics to win.

"Italians always act like this," he told AFP. "It is a shame to say that, but when they feel they are being dominated they try to provoke you.

"Yes, they are cheaters, but we can't stop that. Fifa and the referees only see the second act, they never look at why there is an incident.

"I accept when the adversary wins with honour, but that is not the case. We know Zizou, he doesn't react like that, people can't react like that, but he has been insulted.

"I think it was very grave. When you play against people like that you want to kick their ass. It is cheating, but they are Italians."

While reports in the French media suggest that Materazzi called Zidane a 'terrorist,' making reference to his Algerian roots, the Frenchman's reaction was inexcusable and left a sour taste in the mouth after what has been an outstanding career.

Fucking stupid cunt. Sour frogs legs anyone?

Glad you approve!

Saw something about Zidane on the news

Apparently Materazzi made a few comments such as

"I slept with your mother last night" and "Your mother is an Algerian whore"

Zidane's mum was taken to hospital and he is apparently very close to his mother and thats what made him flip his lid - in more ways than one!

They have preached the 'kick racism out of football' now lets see if it's just gloss on their behalf or not.
I'm not saying ban him from international football but come down on him hard. FIFA will probably pussy out as usual though.

Ricksen off? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/rangers/5164284.stm)

Fernando Ricksen fears he has played his last game for Rangers after being sent home from the club's pre-season tour of South Africa.
The 29-year-old will return to Glasgow after being punished for "inappropriate behaviour" on the outbound flight.

He claimed manager Paul Le Guen over-reacted after he admitted drinking and arguing with a stewardess.

The Dutch defender told The Sun: "I'm flying home to Glasgow and it looks as if I'm finished with Rangers."

A statement on Rangers' website confirmed Ricksen had been punished for his behaviour on the flight to Johannesburg.

Le Guen said: "His behaviour was unacceptable for the way I've asked players to conduct themselves.

"Therefore, he won't carry out pre-season training with the squad."

Rickson claims that Rangers have other motives for wanting him out of Ibrox.

"I think I've played my last game because I don't know if I can work with a manager who treats me like that," he said.

"I would have accepted a fine, but to be sent home is just ridiculous.

"Look, I'm a big earner and if they can find a way to get me off the wage bill then maybe it frees up money to bring in others.

"I deserved some punishment. I'm not proud of what I did. It was stupid and I've made a mistake.

"What has happened to me just feels very harsh, though, and I can't help feeling this is being done because they want me out."

Before departing for the tour, Ricksen had expressed his excitement for the coming campaign under new boss Le Guen.

Following a season wrecked by persistent stomach muscle problems, the Dutchman spoke of his determination to be remembered as a great player at Rangers.

"I'm injury free and very happy," he said. "I'm probably more determined than I've ever been, but I have to be that way.

"I'm almost 30 now and I want to continue to play football. I want to push myself and get the maximum out of myself.

"I don't want to end up a has-been. I know I can achieve so much more and I know there is more to come from me."

Buffon = Arsenal
Cannavaro = Real Madrid/Barcelona

I was referring more to the fact that an Italian team has only won the champions league once in the last tens years or so.

Anyway that wasn't my real point. I was making an assumption that most people wouldn't consider the Italian league to be that strong. Not as strong as the spanish or the english league anyway. Then a team purely based in Italy goes and wins the world cup.

It is a fairly strong league, I'd certainly put it on a par with La Liga in terms of the quality of some of the teams. I mean 2 teams have won the CL over the last 10 years - Juve in 1996 and Milan in 2003, both have also been finalists and semi finalists since then. Inter have also made the quarters on a few occassions over the last decade too - so not a too shabby performance really. If you look at English teams only 2 teams have won it over the last 10 years also.

BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.

The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

World Cup official shot himself

Berlin's top World Cup official shot himself in the head just hours after the tournament ended and is now fighting for his life, police say.
Juergen Kiessling, 65, was rushed to hospital from his house in Reinickendorf, a suburb of Berlin, after a neighbour heard the shot.

The motive for the apparent suicide attempt is not yet clear.

German media report that he left two suicide notes - one for his daughter alone, and one for his family.

Berlin hosted the World Cup final on Sunday, when fans watched Italy beat France on penalties.

Mr Kiessling was known as "Mister WM" (Mr World Cup) by colleagues in Berlin.

The tournament was widely seen as a great success for the host nation.

I don't know what Matterazzi said. I thought it didn't seem clear enough to get anything from, but I'm not good at lip reading. And if people are getting completely different words, then maybe they're all wrong.

i cant imagine youd have much use lip reading it anyway unless you were fluent in whichever language the 2 were speaking in. i have wondered which language footballers call each other names in.

thats what i was thinking. the refs might have to be fluent in a few languages or something, the players might pick things up i suppose, but surely you cant pick up something like what materezzi is thought to have said in a foreign language, how many times are you going to hear that?!

the acoustics are really good down the away end, the hammersmith end is the loudest but the roof is half new and old, the riverside stand is probably the most quietest in the league - yes more so then the higbury library, if you see someone stand up in the riverside stand then thats when you know something exciting and out of this world has happened - stevenage road can be very hit and miss with noise, though to be fair alot of them have to sit on wooden seats :D

Troubled Ricksen consults clinic (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/rangers/5170370.stm)

Troubled Rangers defender Fernando Ricksen has been referred to a London clinic that helps tackle alcoholism, drug abuse, gambling and depression.
The Dutchman was sent home by new manager Paul Le Guen for "inappropriate behaviour" on a flight to South Africa.

And Ricksen told Rangers' website: "I have met people who I feel can support me through this difficult stage and feel I can benefit from their counsel."

The Sporting Chance Clinic was set up by former England star Tony Adams.

Ricksen's former Rangers team-mate, Alex Rae, now manager at Dundee, is a patron of the charity.

Newspapers had quoted Ricksen as suggesting that Le Guen had over-reacted after he admitted drinking and arguing with a stewardess as Rangers headed for pre-season training in Johannesburg.

But an official announcement stated: "With the support and guidance of the medical team and management at Rangers Football Club, Fernando Ricksen has today sought counsel from the Sporting Chance Clinic in London, which is also supported by the Scottish Premier League."

And Ricksen has stressed his determination to make the best of what could be his final chance with the club.

"I am convinced that, as a professional footballer, I can bounce back quickly with advice and guidance," he said.

"I have made mistakes, the recent incident travelling to South Africa being well-documented, and I would like to acknowledge that my behaviour was totaly inappropriate.

"I apologise to the club, the club officials and the supporters and intend to get back playing football in the committed manner that I am used to as soon as possible."

Ricksen has been a controversial figure on and off the pitch since joining Rangers for £3.6m from AZ Alkmaar in 2000.

He has twice been punished by video evidence after altercations that were missed by match officials.

And he was also fined £7,000 after being convicted of assault and breach of the peace in October 2003 following a fireworks party at his Glasgow home.

His international career came to a premature end when he kicked a hotel door during an away trip to Belarus.

But Ricksen was particularly inspirational for Rangers after becoming club captain during Barry Ferguson's sabbatical with Blackburn Rovers.

However, last season he was troubled by injuries and a dip in form.

Now he has become the first public victim at Ibrox of Le Guen's reputed strict discipline.

Right, he signed a contract with Bolton... but wasn't registered with the Premier League in time which means he is technically allowed to join another team as Bolton didn't get the forms in on time.

I'm amazed that Lippi quit... but I can see the logic, where do you go after winning the biggest prize in International Football? I wouldn't be surprised if Lippi ended up managing Germany next to do there what he did for the Italians.

As for the German's, they should be utterly ashamed of how they treated Klinsmann. He was in the job for 2 YEARS, he brought a number of amazingly talented young players in and ditched the old fogies who get in the team from reputation alone and got them to 3rd in the World Cup.
To demand that he moves back from the USA is ridiculous, he was never gonna choose that over the stability of his family, the German FA are clearly cocks.

Here ya go, so far...

Zinedine Zidane has elaborated on the chain of events which led to his attack on Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final.

The midfield genius brought the curtain down on one of the world's great careers when seeing red for a headbutt on Materazzi.

Numerous reports have commented on what led Zidane to launch his attack on the Italian defender and the France star has claimed Materazzi insulted both his mother and his sister.

"He (Materazzi) pronounced very tough words about my mother and my sister. I tried not to listen to him but he kept repeating them," Zidane said in a live interview on French television channel Canal Plus.

Zidane had kept his own counsel on Sunday's events prior to his interview on French television and he has apologised for his actions - but still feels Materazzi was the guilty party.

"I apologise to all the children who watched the match on Sunday," he stated.

What's this? A Rebirth of THE thread.....man I'm late! I'll note form everything:

- I'm very pissed that Italy won the world cup, I hate Italian football...and I love the French! Ah well.

- When I used to steward at Newcastle games (before they sacked me...bastards!) I once stood on the touchline during home game against Fulham last season and they had the most upbeat home fans that I had seen in ages, they were pretty loud....whereas a week before the Man Utd fans were twats! But you all knew that!

- Why are people predicting Newcastle and Portsmouth to finish so high up? Newcastle won't finish in the top 10 with just Ameobi up front (former player Kevin Gallagher said the other day that Ameobi should be in the England squad...he would say that, he's Scottish) and Portsmouth, no matter how much money they have still have Harry Redknapp as manager. I'll do my prediction later.

- I finished second bottom of my world cup dream leauge at work, I was beaten by a 65 year old Turkish lady.

I'm sure he's had many laugh's telling that story, but it made me realise the best way to retaliate to that sort of abuse is not to attack the opposing player, but to score against them and run past them afterwards with a big grin on your face. It really annoys them"

Cisse's Away (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/5173372.stm)

Marseille seal Cisse loan signing

Marseille have confirmed that Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse has joined them on a season-long loan, with an option to make the deal permanent.
The 24-year-old striker claimed earlier this month that he was told by Liverpool his services were no longer required at Anfield.

"My choice has always been Marseille," said the Frenchman.

Cisse is recovering from a broken right leg he sustained playing for France against China prior to the World Cup.

The Frenchman, who missed the majority of the 2004/2005 season after breaking his left leg, is unlikely to start playing again until October.

Liverpool signed Cisse from Auxerre for a record club transfer fee of £14m in July 2004.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez said: "We have an agreement for a season loan with Marseille for Cisse.

"It is the best option for him, because after two broken legs maybe it will be more difficult for him now in the English league.

"Now we have (Peter) Crouch, (Robbie) Fowler and Bellamy and that would have made it difficult for him to get matches to regain his fitness levels.

"We wanted more pace, a different sort of striker who would score a different type of goal. Bellamy will give us that.

"Cisse played a lot of games and I am not the kind of manager who does not use players bought by previous managers.

"I use the best for my team, and I used Cisse when I wanted pace, but I wanted something different to take us forward."

Does anyone else think that Crouch, Fowler and Bellamy might totally misfire together? I think Bellamy will be the best of the bunch, but they're nothing compaired to;

Arsenal: Henry, Adebayor, Van Persie
Man U: Rooney, Saha, Van Horsey (if he stays)
Chelski: Andre, Drogba

I'm not too sure on the Arsenal shirt - I've found a better picture of it. (http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c20/GeneralBeximus/shirt0607.jpg) I'm gonna get one, but I'll get it from Sports Soccer where it'll be cheaper.

I'm not sure. They'll either be cracking, or just not good at all. We'll have to see.

I spent all my sensible money last season on the redcurrent one from the store with Henry on the back. This season, I may need to be a little cheaper :D It'll be £25 in Sports Soccer, and I can cope this year without a name.

I'm debating on a name... It's a dangerous step, but then it's a snapshot of that season. I'd consider:

Henry (obviously)
Fabregas
Rosicky

hmm.

I've got an Adams shirt (JVC) from the 97/98 title year, and a Bergkamp Shirt (Dreamcast) from the 99/00 Season. I don't always, and my mum moans about getting names, but you're right, they are linked to that one season. I love my Adam's shirt :D

I'd been considering Fabrigas, or maybe I'd get a Ljungberg shirt. I wouldn't get Rosicky, coz he hasn't really been here yet.

61 goals in 3 seasons at Barca, good form at Monaco on loan and won the UEFa Cup with Seville last year.]

Also, as for early games in the season, expect Arsenal to look a little shaky. New players, all playing at a new ground. It'll be like they're playing away. They're used to a narrow Highbury pitch, and it's not happening at their new gaff. Some good money to be made at the bookies.

Thing with that is that we were beginning to look ropey at Highbury - the bigger pitch will suit our players more now, which is great. I'm not expecting the world this season - I'm prepared to wait for a little bedding in time, but not too long.

And that Chelsea shirt is very very sleek.

My league predictions (you illogical whiny bastards :D)

I reckon that the top 2 places will be very close this season, and that Arsenal will have a slow start and recover strongly, and that Reading will do well. Villa's season could be revitalized in October when O'Leary will get sacked and a new guy (as after all, it is a mans game) comes in and motivates their painfully average squad. Fulham will either sink or surprise, i hope they stay up though because i like them. Liverpool being Liverpool will win something other than the one thing they want to and Everton will have a typical up, down and then up again season.
