Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton has escaped unhurt after a firearms incident at the team's hotel on Monday.
Reports suggest Staunton was confronted by an unidentified man brandishing a gun at the Portmarnock hotel where they team are staying ahead of Wednesday's international friendly with Holland.
The Irish Police have revealed they have arrested a man in connection with the incident.
The Football Association of Ireland confirmed an incident did take place earlier on Monday and revealed Staunton was safe and well.

"The matter is now being dealt with by the gardaí.
"The Republic of Ireland Manager Stephen Staunton is absolutely fine and looking forward to training tomorrow."

According to SSN - It's not the first time there's been a fire arm incident at the hotel when the team has been staying at it.
The security is very lax so the fans and media can mingle with the players.

In 1975 Manchester United keeper Alex Stepney managed to dislocate his jaw while shouting at his defenders during a game against Birmingham City. Former England midfielder Brian Greenhoff replaced Stepney between the sticks and kept a clean sheet!
Wales and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Crossley was forced to spend seven weeks in bed after landing on his backside whilst taking a goal kick during a pre-season friendly in Finland in 1997.
In 1894, Queen's Park goalkeeper Andrew Baird found himself in an embarrassing situation during a Scottish Cup tie after getting his hand caught in the net. He could only watch as Rangers centre forward David Boyd scored for The Gers.

I think its the Vinny Jones thing. When people can't buy a good aggressive defensive midfielder (e.g. Roy Keane), they just go for mental ones that scare the flair players.

They have a reasonable chance - good young attacking first team, strengthened by the signing of Czech midfielder and Captain - Tomas Rosicky - but could be suffering a bit of ill-feeling in the dressing room because of constant doubts over the futures of both Ashley Cole and Jose Antonio Reyes.
Also, they lost a couple of key experienced players over the summer in Dennis Bergkamp (legend), Sol Campbell (Judas) and Robert Pires (French poof with a shit beard) which could be felt this season.

Rooney's is questionable - even I in my infinite hatred of the potato-headed cunt can see that he was watching the ball and had no idea that the guy was there. It was a yellow card for a stray arm, not a straight red - that implies intent to hurt the guy.

Yeah I don't like it crossing over to affect the domestic games. Unless it's a dangerous tackle - in that case it shouldn't matter where you're playing - the fact that another player's career or season is being threatened should mean you get punished accordingly.
Oh yeah, i agree with Scholes' some things will never change :D
Yeah, it's part of him. I often wonder why he still tries tackling at all... guess it strikes fear into the opponent when the ginger one takes a lunge.

It's because it's Rooney, he's done his damage already and he's gonna carry the tag of "THUGGISH CUNT" with him for the rest of his career, he'll ALWAYS be assumed to be doing the worst - no matter how accidental it may be.

It's NOT fair, quite right, but that's what happens when you play with the raw aggression that he does and with seemingly no way of capping it.
He wouldn't be in this mess if he'd learned some restraint, I still reckon the United move came way too soon. He needed more time to learn to be a professional before the massive pressure of a multi-million pound move to a title-challenging club.

There's a helluva lot of hype around Southampton left-back, Gareth Bale, at the moment - just been a nice little snippet about him on SSN, two goals already this season... both from free-kicks... and the club insist it won't become a Theo Walcott scenario again as Bale has actually signed his pro papers already.
I'm-a try to watch some Southampton games, see if he lives up to ze hype.

I prefer 2 games in with 4 points... :D
I actually got down to St. James Park last night to watch us against Forest Green (So I missed Theo's goal) - I've remembered how easy it is to support a Prem/Championship team, as opposed to a conference team. The first half was terrible - we only scored because their keeper made one hell of a mistake and came for a ball outside the area on the left and missed completely. Second half was better, hit the crossbar and had a chance cleared off the line. We deserved it, but the football is always pants in comparison. But we had 3,500 down there last night. Not bad for a conference side. We had the best average crowd last season by miles.

I love going down - it's a pity I live too far away and can't do it often. Exeter have employed their normal strategy of getting the ball in defense, hoofing it downfield, and then watching while the opposition bring it back to them in defense to do it all again. It's thrilling stuff :D But I love Conference football. It's a heart attack waiting to happen sometimes, but it's close to grassroots, and it's fun.

http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=410190&CPID=8&clid=1&lid=2&title=United+offer+for+Hargreaves
England midfielder Owen Hargreaves says he is weighing up a lucrative offer for his services from Manchester United.
The Bayern Munich man is expected to team up with Frank Lampard at the heart of The Three Lions' midfield for the friendly against Greece on Wednesday, but has domestic concerns to consider as well.
He has only just signed a contract extension with the Bundesliga giants, but has always wanted to prove himself in England.
It has now emerged that Sir Alex Ferguson has made a concrete offer for the Canadian-born player and Hargreaves is mulling over whether to make a long-awaited move to The Premiership.
"The offer from Manchester United is fantastic," Hargreaves told Sport Bild.
"Particularly as an England international, it is of interest and you never know if such an opportunity will arise again.
"Now is the time to take the next step to develop even further."
With the transfer deadline at the end of the month fast approaching, Ferguson had been tipped to bring in Villarreal's Marcos Senna, but the deal is thought to have stalled on the £8 million asking price for the midfielder.
The Red Devils have therefore turned to Hargreaves to join injured £18.6 million man Michael Carrick at the club.
Munich meanwhile, insist that the 25-year-old will remain at the Allianz Arena for the remainder of his contract.
"I have just spoken with [general manager] Uli Hoeness and he is absolutely clear that selling Owen Hargreaves is not an issue," Bayern press officer Markus Horwick stated.
"I think what Mr Hoeness says is enough to end any speculation.
"Owen Hargreaves will be staying with us for the remaining four years on his contract."
Having lost Michael Ballack already this summer, the German champions seem prepared to dig their heels in to hang on to the key central midfielder and United may now have to concentrate their search for a midfielder further afield.
Interesting...
Also, West Ham have signed Robert Green from Norwich for a fee which could reach £2M.

4-3-3 is a difficult formation if you've got lots of good midfielders (a formation Spurs would never play then!) You could go to 3-4-3, but that's too dangerous against some teams. 4-4-2, or 5 (wingbacks)-3-2 is always what I prefer - I always tend to play it on the pc too, but never 4-5-1.

Injured Owen big doubt for season
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/newcastle_united/4801049.stm
Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has admitted injured striker Michael Owen may not play at all this season.
Owen, 26, ruptured his anterior cruciate knee ligament in England's 2-2 draw against Sweden at the recent World Cup and is set to have an operation.
"It's a long term injury. I don't know if he'll play again this season," Roeder told BBC Radio Newcastle.
"He's getting the best possible treatment and will have the best surgeon in the world operating on him."
Roeder added: "Michael has an injury that will take a fair bit of time to repair. If we put a date on it and we say that he'll be back by next March, and then he's not fit, then it will cause more problems."
Owen's cruciate ligament surgery had been delayed until September because he required an operation to repair cartilage damage on his injured right knee in July.
The England international, who signed for Newcastle from Real Madrid for £17m in August 2005, missed most of the second half of the 2005-06 season with a broken foot.

It would depend on how you postitioned your midfield - you could play a midfield diamond, but I think that relies too much on play down the middle. I like a flatter midfield, with a pair in the middle that can defend or attack if needed.
A lot of teams don't utilise the wings enough, and it's a shame. Players like Lennon, SWP, Cole, Pennant are like weapons sometimes, and if they get their crosses in, then you're gonna get scoring opportunities.

I don't think this has been posted:
Hargreaves to force Man Utd move
Owen Hargreaves is believed to be on the verge of a move to Manchester United if the two clubs can agree a deal.
The 25-year-old starred at Old Trafford for England on Wednesday as he helped the team to a 4-0 win over Greece.
Bayern are reluctant to let Hargreaves go but he has made it clear he wants to join United and £13m could seal it.
Hargreaves will return to Bayern on Thursday where he is expected to reiterate his desire to move.
He is already understood to have had meetings with the Bayern hierarchy where he has stated his intentions.
And Hargreaves publicly signalled his intent for the transfer to go through when he said: "To play (for Manchester United) is a great opportunity and I would be happy if I got that chance.
"Particularly as an England international, it's of interest and you never know if such an opportunity will arise again.
"Now is the time to take the next step to develop even further."
Hargreaves seems determined to seize on his raised profile in England following his combative and tough-tackling displays during the World Cup.
He was seen as England's player of the tournament and continued his impressive rise in the international ranks in the friendly against Greece in new manager Steve McClaren's first game in charge.
Bayern would be reluctant to sell Hargreaves after fellow central midfield star Michael Ballack left them to join Chelsea at the end of last season.
Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness said: "Hargreaves is not a subject of discussion.
"Owen has a contract until 2010 and he will complete it. The issue is closed."
Hargreaves has been at Bayern since moving to the club from Canada as a 16-year-old in 1997.
He helped Bayern to the Champions League crown in 2001 and has also won four Bundesliga titles with the club.
His inclusion in former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the World Cup raised eyebrows after he had failed to establish himself since his international debut against Holland in August 2001.
But he was in impressive form in Germany and starred when he played against Sweden and Portugal.
Bayern coach Felix Magath added: "I am not planning to get rid of any players, particularly not Hargreaves - it has never been an issue."
Hargreaves has been linked with numerous Premiership clubs over recent years, including Arsenal, Tottenham and Middlesbrough.

Premiership to axe 'injury break'
By Phil Harlow
The Premier League has asked players, managers and referees to end the custom of the ball being kicked out of play when a player goes down injured.
Decisions on whether a break in play is necessary for treatment to be received will now be taken by the referee.
"There was a general feeling that this player-led convention had gone too far," Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson told BBC Sport.
But the Football League told BBC Sport it had no plans to make changes.
The custom has gradually established itself in football over the years, but has never been formalised in the rules.
But the feeling that this "gentlemen's agreement" was being taken advantage of has become widespread, with frequent breaks in play at the 2006 World Cup cited as the most high-profile abuse.
Managers and players complained of situations where the ball was kicked out for non-existent injuries in order to stop a team's attacking momentum.
And the arbitrary nature of the convention has led to several flashpoints in recent years.
Last season, Arsenal's crucial Premiership match against Tottenham was marred by scenes of managers Arsene Wenger and Martin Jol squaring up on the sidelines.
Wenger was furious when Spurs did not put the ball out of play after Emmanuel Eboue and Gilberto Silva were injured in the build-up to Robbie Keane's goal.
Another example of the misunderstanding the convention can produce is Marc Overmars' goal for Arsenal against Sheffield United in their 1999 FA Cup fifth-round tie.
In that instance, the ball had been kicked out by United to allow their player Lee Morris to receive treatment.
But instead of returning the ball to the Blades on resumption of play, Arsenal striker Kanu released Overmars to score.
The incident led to the match being replayed, with the Football Association agreeing to the Gunners' offer to play the match again.
WHY DID THE PREMIER LEAGUE WANT THIS CHANGE?
Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson:
"There were certain incidents - like the Martin Jol and Arsene Wenger flare-up last season - that made us think it was time to place the decision back in the hands of the referee.
"Sometimes the demand for the ball to go immediately out - from both players and fans - was almost acting as an extra defender.
"If there is a serious injury then the referee can, of course, take immediate action in the interests of player safety, but if it's a run-of-the-mill knock then play should go on.
"It's never been part of the rules, so that makes it all the more important to get the League Managers' Association (LMA) and the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) on board.
"We need both organisations' support to communicate this to their members - and fans also need to be aware.
"This will remove the pressure on players who are wondering at the back of their mind 'is he really injured?'
"What people don't like to see is when an attack gets stopped because someone goes down grabbing their knee and then, a minute later, he's sprinting around and putting tackles in.
"It's important for the integrity and honesty of the game, as well as the flow."
WILL THE PFA CO-OPERATE?
PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor:
"I was at a meeting on Tuesday with the LMA and referees' representatives and lots of managers said they were confused and frustrated by the current state of affairs.
"From that point of view, it's vital to establish some clarity so everyone knows exactly what the situation is.
"If the ball is kicked out then it should be a normal throw-in, and if the referee stops play, then when play restarts with a drop ball possession should return to the injured party.
"Player safety has to be paramount. We don't want referees mucking about if there's any doubt - they can't take any chances because players can, for instance, swallow their tongue.
"It's about striking a balance between common sense and player safety.
"Some people have been rather cynical about this custom, and that is what we want to lose - but without losing the spirit of fair play."
WHAT ABOUT THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE CLUBS?
Football League spokesman John Nagle:
"We will not be issuing any additional advice to referees, clubs or players regarding the issue of kicking the ball out of play at injury situations.
"There is no evidence that this convention is being widely abused within the League.
"We will, though, continue to monitor the situation."
WHAT DO THE MANAGERS THINK?
LMA deputy chairman Frank Clark:
"We've had several meetings with managers from all divisions and there is a huge majority in favour of giving the decision to the referees.
"It worked very well for a number of years, but you only had to watch certain matches at the World Cup to see it's being abused now.
"Teams aren't giving the ball back in the spirit originally intended anymore and the whole thing's a mess.
"It's not a rule change, but because it's a convention which is ingrained in the game here, we need everyone on the same wavelength.
"To a certain extent, it's going to be a PR exercise, especially in terms of the fans.
"We definitely think a change is the way forward."
DOES THE FA HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY?
FA spokesman Andrin Cooper:
"There's obviously nothing in the laws of the game about it; it has just evolved over time.
"Our view is that if the referees, clubs and managers agree on one clear approach, then we're fine with that.
"If the participants affected - that is the players, managers and referees - agree, then it is absolutely down to them.
"In terms of grassroots football, I think we need to see how things progress in the professional game before any firm decision is taken."

Reggina suffer 15-point deduction
Italian club Reggina will start next season with a 15-point deduction in Serie A for their role in the match-fixing scandal.
Club president Pasquale "Lillo" Foti has also been banned for two-and-a-half years and fined £20,000, while the club must also pay a £68,000 fine.
Prosecutors had requested Reggina be demoted to Serie B.
Reggina usually struggle against relegation and the deduction penalty leaves them a tough task next season.
Serie B club Arezzo avoided relegation to Serie C1 but will start next season with a nine-point deduction.
Four other clubs have been punished in the scandal.
Juventus were relegated to Serie B and docked 17 points at the start of the season for seeking an unfair advantage in the appointment of referees.
They were also stripped of the Serie A titles they won in the last two seasons.
AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina were all allowed to remain in Serie A but with points penalties.
The clubs have lodged a second round of appeals against their sentences, which were reduced in a first appeal.
The Italian Olympic Committee's conciliation court will meet on Friday to rule on Juve's second appeal.

I think Dirk Kuyt is shit anyway. Shit name. Ugly cunt. Liverpool didn't need him, should've gone to Newcastle.

Arsenal will be out of the top 6 this year. - they've sold off their strength and brought in more lightweight players. They're screwed.
Newcastle have 3 singings coming in apparently. One of those being an unkown russian striker from a certain club (I've had a look at the club in question and two of their 4 strikers are phenominal). Hopefully we'll get 2 strikers and a defender. Then we'll be up there in the top 6 too.

You're an idiot.
Bellamy an d Kuyt will destroy defences. Crouch and Fowler can now retire.

You're more of an idiot for coming up with such an un-necessary response.
Liverpool need Crouch, Fowler can fuck off.

Why do Liverpool need Crouch? He's absolutely shite in the air and hardly better on his feet. He only scores goals that anyone else could have scored.

...Oh are you kidding?
Who else are Liverpool going to rely on? Crouch is quality and has steadily gotten better over the last two years. At the moment, how you cannot have him in the team is beyond me.

Because the guy has no control over the ball. Yes he can get his lanky ass up into the air, but the ball randomly bounces off of him, usually straight to the opposition. Kuyt can actually win headers and put them on target, something that Crouch can only do if his feet are on the ground.

But Kuyt and Crouch are two polar opposite players. You cannot choose who to have based on their abilities, as it would be six of one half a dozen of the other.
Looking at the Liverpool team now, especially now they have Pennant and Bellamy, they need Crouch more than they do Kuyt.

Nope. Most strikers lose possession when they get a shot off on goal. Crouch loses possession becauzse he has no ball control with his head.

So if people have no control over the ball with their head, please explain Alan Shearer, Miroslav Klose, Karl Heinze Riedler, Duncam Ferguson etc etc etc
Also, see Kerlon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5LdH_km-_o).

That's ability to head the ball, not ball control.
Ball control is first touch, dribbling etc.

That's actually distribution.
Stop just saying things to make an argument.
You think Crouch is rubbish, fair enough, that is your opinion, which you are entitled to.
But don't just waffle on throwing up words, because your basis for a logical argument decreases.
