Not sure what i feel about this. On one hand, it would be great to have a man whose blood flows white at the head of the club but it would also mean Wisey goes. If you look behind the scenes at what Wise has done with the club, the results [almost] pale into insignificance. I'd like Ken Bates to stay on in some form though. He's a man who knows how to turn a former great around.

i'm not disputing the fact that you were the better team tonight, or indeed that your team is arguably one of the best in Europe.

It's true, we can't play for shit away in Europe. Van der Sar was good (letting in 3 speaks volumes about our defence). Scholes was our only inspirational player, but even he couldn't do a Keano. And boy did we need a Keano.
Rooney started to pick up his game, but nowhere near good enough. Ronaldo, Giggs and Carrick were shite. Absolute shite. I completely saw that coming after the first few mins when Ronaldo tried a stupid unnecessary trick and lost the ball on the wing. Idiot.
Should I bother with the defence? O'Shea was ok. Vidic just wasn't ready. And what a fucking time to make a stupid decision from Heinze. Seriously. We totally could have come back but no, GIVE them another one.

Yep, losing to an English side, and a rival at that, would make it so much worse. I totally could understand all Liverpool fans wanting Milan to win our semi. I reckon I'd have been quietly supporting a non-English against English if your semi hadn't been all English.

For anyone who's interested:
Anyone else thinking of going? And if there's 17000 available, the chances are pretty slim if you've not been to a previous match it seems.
Flights/hotels are pretty much impossible to getnow aren't they. I know flights are £300-£500 each way. If you stretch out the stay you can get some for £150 or so each way. But again, hotels and such. Even if you do somehow get a ticket.

im sorry my friends. Believe me. You dont live in italy and you dont know shit about us. I dont personally know if my team is ruled by a bunch of cheaters but i know we got 8 penalty points because of just two calls in which a minor manager talked about a linesman. The match they talked about was Siena-Milan in which we got an offiside goal canceled (and it wasnt offiside at all) and few yellow cards undeserved. I repeat, you dont know anything about this. And you cant even say tonight we didnt deserve this victory. I cannot say we are going to win this CL, maybe not, but i dont agree about what you are talking about

Nobody said they didn't deserve to win tonight  the point is that, after being found guilty of match fixing, the European ban that was imposed should've remained. The over-turning of that ban and the reduction of the point deductions just further highlights how bent the whole thing is.

I think Ferguson might retire this summer y'know. He always said after the debacle (love that word!) a few years ago that, when he actually retired, he'd do it with no warning - he'd just go to avoid the media circus.
If he'd won the CL, he'd have gone out at the top, I just wonder if he has the patience left to try again next season. He could still retire with a record 9th (?) Premiership title.
There are said to be SIX clubs considering legal action against the PL and FA over the outcome. My money is on: Watford, Charlton, Wigan, Fulham, Sheffield United and one other team. Dunno who.
I know think the sixth club is Boro, because they got a points deduction for a lot, lot less than what Wham did.

Anyone else thinking of going? And if there's 17000 available, the chances are pretty slim if you've not been to a previous match it seems.

I'd expect so too, pretty much the entire team worked their bollocks off and a rest would do them good - especially Carragher, Gerrard and Kuyt who, yet again, must've covered about 80 miles during that games. Love Dirka Dirka. <3

Well yeah, the difference between 3rd and 4th place is about £500,000 or something - it's not exactly big money - but the prestige that comes along with winning the CL, of course we're going to throw all our eggs into that basket and, if we happen to help West Ham get relegated in the process, then we deserve another medal for that. :D

And he is exactly right. As much as i grudge Sam Alladyce for recalling our best current defender, Ľubomír Michalík, from loan the day before the most crucial match in our club's history, i acknowledge that he had the right to do so as it served in Bolton's interests. The simple point is that we (like West Ham, or anyone else in a relegation scrap) weren't good enough to avoid this situation.

Even though it was a truly awful performance by Man United, Fergie's excuses about not having the chance to rest players and having more fixtures are quite valid. Chelsea and Man United have had a fixture pile up since January and it has clearly taken its toll on both teams. Granted that in order to win more trophies you have to win more matches, but people must be truly biased to say that Liverpool haven't been at an advantage to have less fixtures in the last 4 months than the top 2.
Aside from Rafa's tactical genius in Europe, I doubt the Reds would have been in the final if they were competing in the FA Cup and Premiership. It's hard to believe a team is the best in Europe if they can't even compete for the top spot in their domestic league. However, I believe next year could be a very different matter.

Lame. Seriously.
You know who says that? Mourinho. And you know why? Because he has a bug up his arse that he cannot do it in Europe and the same thing can be said about Ferguson - Benitez has done more in Europe in 3 years with us than Ferguson has in 20.
It's disappointing that we haven't challenged for the league (forget the domestic cups, they're not what's important really) but for anyone to suggest that we've "settled" for the Champions League is mornic. It's the biggest prize in club football. Yeah, we want the league, but you can be damn sure that we want this just as much. The simple reason we're not in the league title is because (A) we made a very slow start (B) our away form has been horrendous and, more importantly, (C) we don't have a big enough squad. Same as United don't right now and Chelsea don't either.
The same criticism about us ONLY being in Europe could be levelled back at both of those sides too - Ferguson has put all his eggs into the Premiership basket and so has Mourinho. KNowing that, Benitez has cleverly put his focus on something we can actually win. He could have not rested the big players in the little games and yeah, we'd get more points... but either way, we'd still finish in 3rd or 4th place only then we'd be out of Europe.
You cannot fault what Liverpool have done in Europe, you just can't, and anyone that tries to is an official Mourinho-sympathiser. Any smart manager hones in on the best chance of a trophy because the only league position that matters is 1st, anything less than that is redundant.
Do you think Ferguson would've been disappointed this season if they lost the league to Chelsea but won the Champions League because that's where they focussed all their efforts? No way, he'd gladly swap the league for the one cup he's never truly dominated... and that's why he will ALWAYS be second to Bob Paisley. :)

Rangers have been fined £8,280 by Uefa for the behaviour of their fans during their match against Osasuna - but the Spanish club must pay £31,000.
The control and disciplinary section of European football's governing body said there were "serious deficiencies in the organisation of the game" by Osasuna.
Uefa added that there was "improper conduct" by both sets of fans at the Uefa Cup tie in Pamplona on 14 March.
It is thought that Rangers' fine was largely for fans' sectarian singing.
The two clubs have three days in which to appeal against the decision.
Rangers said on their website: "We expect to receive the full reasons for the judgement from Uefa in the next few days."
"The club understands that the penalty reflects mainly discriminatory singing at the end of the match.
"However, we believe that, in coming to their decision, Uefa has acknowledged the great efforts the club and our supporters have made in tackling sectarianism with measures including the fans' self-policing drive.
"We also understand Uefa has listened carefully to the very strong case the club and its supporters made in relation to the treatment of fans at the match and the woeful segregation arrangements."
Their last-16 match was played with a backdrop of violence in the stands as Rangers supporters clashed with Spanish police.
Many travelling fans accused the police of heavy-handed tactics, or even brutality.
But the Glasgow club admitted shortly after the second-leg match, which Walter Smith's side lost 1-0 to go out of Europe, that several supporters who were banned from Ibrox had made the trip to Spain and gained entry to the El Sadar Stadium.
Thousands of visiting fans obtained tickets on the black market for the match.
Footage - which emerged on the YouTube website - of Rangers supporters involved in sectarian chanting at the match was also examined by Uefa.
And chairman Sir David Murray said he would consider refusing tickets for away matches in Scotland and for European games if fans continued with distasteful chanting.
But Rangers had feared a heavier punishment, particularly after being fined £13,000 for a similar offence last season following their Champions League clash with Villarreal.
Uefa's website stated: "Osasuna have been fined 45,000 Euros for serious deficiencies in the organisation of the game on 14 March, as well as for the improper conduct of their supporters.
"Rangers, meanwhile, have been ordered to pay 12,000 Euros for the latter offence involving visiting fans of the Scottish team."

Uefa admit they will not be able to satisfy the huge demand for Champions League final tickets.
Liverpool and AC Milan will each get more than 20,000 tickets for the 23 May final in Athens' Olympic Stadium.
There are plans for a fan park in the Greek capital, with giant screens, to cater for those without tickets.
But Uefa spokesman William Gaillard said: "Our advice to fans is not to travel without a ticket as we do not want them to be exploited by touts."
He added: "We know that however many tickets we provide it would never be enough - we could probably sell out a stadium with a million seats!
"But if supporters just want to savour the experience then they can use the fan park in downtown Athens."
Uefa, meanwhile, are not expecting trouble between the two sets of supporters.
Gaillard said: "There is no history of hostility between them and it gives us an advantage that we have the experience of these fans in a final in similar circumstances two years ago."

Aston Villa chief executive Richard FitzGerald has promised boss Martin O'Neill "significant" transfer funds.
FitzGerald said: "We want to be around the top of the Premiership and playing Champions League football and you need world class players to do that.
"People might have thought we pushed the boat out signing Ashley Young (for £9.65m) but I can guarantee significant funds have been made available.
"Owner Randy Lerner has freed up a transfer pot for Martin O'Neill."
FitzGerald added: "No-one has put a figure on the sum but we wouldn't have come out and said we want to be competing at the top of the Premiership and be in the Champions League if we didn't know what that entailed."
O'Neill is already being linked with a host of players including Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy - he played under the Irishman at Celtic - and Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe plus Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

I'm very, very shocked... Steve's a legend and he's had a hand in some of our best players and you don't win the Youth Cup like that in two consecutive years without knowing something.
But, that said, Rafa wants to modernise the way it's done and he has ALWAYS shown an interest in the long-term future of the club by signing 15/16/17 year old lads and dropping them into the academy... while Steve prefers a more old school approach of youth team straight into the reserves/first team. I think Benitez is more in favour of sending the youngsters out on loan to get experience in the way that Spanish teams use their C clubs to give upcoming players some match experience. In that sense, it's a good idea, but it'll sure be sad to see Steve go.
I think Rafa also wants to keep a more watchful eye on the youngsters that HE rates to see if they're ready for a first team chance rather than working off someone elses recommendations but it sounds like a lot of extra work.
I'm disappointed he chose to make it public, he said after the Youth Cup final that he wanted to stay but in a different role. That can't happen now.

Well, my comeback to that would be... how many players have we produced over the last 19 years who've actually been good enough? The answer, not enough. Heighway played a first-hand role in the nurturing and development of Rowler, McManaman, Owen and Gerrard... but Gerrard was the last player to make the leap and stay and that was something like 9 years ago. Since then we've had a few people who're just off the mark, people like Ste Warnock who are alright but you wouldn't stick them in a tough European game or against United.
Benitez has said a few times that he's concerned about the lack of superb talent coming through the ranks although, that said, in this youth side we have some outstanding prospects in Robbie Threlfall (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/threlfall/), Jay Spearing (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/youth/spearing/) and Craig Lindfield (http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/squad/lindfield/).
We've definately got one of the best youth setups in the world... I've been there and seen it and it's nothing short of breathtaking. I'm so awesome that I even got to train in the youth centre with the youth coaches. :D :D :D :D

No, they could still be docked retrospectively. That's happened before I think in lower divisions.
This is what we did at Exeter. The supporters club banded together and bought out the club, and now we own it. Plus, there's more of a democracy into what we can and cannot do with the club abd the money, and I know we're just the lowly conference club, but we're picking ourselves up quite nicely.

I am very, very happy at this. Smart, legal (if unethical) business practice to remove the debts and doing it now (when relegation was certain) stops the points deduction being carried over to next season, which is within the Football League rules. And now, Ken Bates and his consortium outrightly own a debt free club with a 42,000 stadium and a world class (if rented) training complex. Result.
Realistically, whomever is in manager come August needs to do what Howard Wilkinson did for us in the late 1980's. Remove all traces of history and achievement from the areas that the players will see them to remind them that they aren't the past and make them realise that this is the harsh reality of now.

Not sure about that one, but when Liverpool beat Leeds 3-1 (may have been 3-0) at Anfield in the late 90's, the referee was clearly seen to do the same thing when Liverpool scored one of their goals (Mike Riley, i think the ref was) after he let a dubious advantage play on.

Premier Leagues repsone to my email to them
Thank you for your email.
I am sorry that you are disappointed with the Independent Commission's judgment.
It is important to understand that as a result of the potential Rule breach, the Premier League convened the Commission in accordance with PL Rules. The Commission conducted the proceedings and ensured consideration was given to due process.
The Premier League appointed the three panel members on the basis of their integrity, impartiality and expertise. Please see the attached Press release at the time the Commission was convened. This release details the qualifications of the panel members.
The judgment (a link to which is below) needs to be read as a whole to appreciate the outcome that has been reached. The fine of £5.5 million is unprecedented. Further, West Ham has fielded fully registered players throughout the current season, the rule breach was in relation to third-party ownership, not illegal registration.
http://www.premierleague.com/fapl.rac?command=setSelectedIdandnextPage=enNewsLa testandid=1788816andtype=com.fapl.website.news.New sItemandcategoryCode=News
This is the first occasion on which a Club has been charged with a breach of Rule U.18 so the matter was unprecedented, making it difficult to draw comparison with the Middlesbrough points deduction ruling for failure to fulfill a fixture in 1997.
I do hope this will clarify the process for you and thank you for your support.

they'll have to change the rules, the whole reason the 10 point deduction was put in was to stop teams like leeds (leicester done it as well) from on purposely putting themselves in administration knowing that there's an endless list of buyers. how fair is it for teams like rotherham? who genuinely didn't have any money and went into admin, which ultimately got them relegated again.
Captain Stu
May 5th 2007, 01:45 PM
Yup, this has worked totally in Leeds favour.
My Dad told me about another one, can't remember who it was, but when the club was bought out - the debt was assumed at a lower rate, something like 10p on the pound so 90% of the debt was essentially erased. And, like the Leeds thing, it was all planned and rubber-stamped in advance.
Bexster
May 5th 2007, 02:09 PM
It's more than suss that they put the club into administration one day before the end of the season. Yeah, it may have been inevitable that they would have gone there anyway, but they' had an offer that morning to start talks for a buy out, and there were other buy out possibilities. Choosing administration yesterday was Leeds being jammy, and the league should suspend their deduction into next season.

Hartlepool lost to Bristol rovers which meant they didn't win the title! (extremely funny considering Jeff is a Hart fan) but it did mean Bristol stole a play-off space! also Swindon vs Walsall, walsall scored in the last ten mins which meant they won the title! and both teams got promoted! result: double pitch invasion by both sets of fans! :D in league one Swansea lost 6-3 at home, which meant they didn't make the play-offs! Bristol also won promotion and yet another pitch invasion!
it's a shame they move the championship last games to sunday, all games should be played at the same time. there's still play-off places and the title to be decided!
Millwall finished tenth, and have the best record in the league since christmas (bar scunthorpe) absolutely remarkable, if we keep Byfield then we're certs for promotion next season! can't believe the season's already over though, it's gone so quick. still there's another week in the premiership which i can look forward to. well done Fulham!! and good luck sheffield utd against villa tonight a point makes them safe! if they get that, then i'm hoping for a 'weakened side' for when they play those useless northern monkeys at Wigan the last game of the season, while the hamsters get trumped by united!
and then, a nice pitch invasion with Warnock and Jewell share a nice hug, in combining to send west ham down were they deserve to be :)

I went to the Peterborough vs Rochdale game to day. It didnt mean anything but it was a cracking game, 3-3. There was anarchy at the final whistle, all the way through the match the pa system was warning the Posh fans to stay off the pitch or they would be in trouble (they had a final warning from the fa after two bottle throwing incidents earlier in the season). Everyone ignored the order and stormed the pitch, one 17 year old chav runs after a Rochdale player and lamps him, breaks his jaw. It was just disgraceful.

It's only guaranteed if you've been to 7, and there's only been 6 home games. So you need to have been to at least 1 away game to be guaranteed tickets.

Full selling details will be released on Tuesday 8th May.
Chief Executive Rick Parry has stated "Supporters who purchased tickets for seven Champions League games (not including qualifiers against Maccabi Haifa) and had their purchases recorded on their fan cards, are guaranteed to get a ticket for the Final."
"Due to the numbers involved, fans who purchased tickets for six Champions League matches home or away (not including qualifiers against Maccabi Haifa) or a combination of both and had their purchases recorded on their fan cards will have to be entered into a ballot for Final tickets. Season Ticket holders, members of the Auto Cup Scheme and fan-card holders will all have the same chance. None of these groups are being given priority."

Yeah...I'm not arguing that those who haven't been to many should be able to go, but those who have paid up front for a season ticket for years and years and have been to the european games are on the same level as those who just have a fancard and went to the games. Priority should be given to season tickets who also have the games on them, AND then offered to fancard holders.
I'd also like to see the tickets to first be offered as a window sale but I know they won't too that, how could they help the locals like that?!
And yeah, but it's Recreativo who have taken up the offer, not the player.:D Liverpool still have to agree to it but they will.

Just looking at the numbers right now, if there's 17000 tickets (I've heard 20000 on other sites), and Anfield holds about 45000 total, there can't be many who have been to all six home games, let alone seven. I'd say the majority of people in the ballot should get tickets. Unless there's something I've overlooked.
I want to know if it's one or two tickets you get aswell.
rob3000
May 5th 2007, 08:47 PM
It's one. All fancards can always only be used to buy one ticket. I reckon there's a lot of people who are eligable.
I'm pretty sure I can get a ticket, but I can't afford the flight. If a friend was going I'd improvise and hitchhike across Europe or something but I can only get one.

I'll have two chances of getting tickets in the ballot, and I don't like my chances of getting both of them drawn. Fingers crossed though, and guess I'll just have to wait and see what the further details are on tuesday.
And I've just thought of all of the fans who went to Stamford Bridge will likely have gone to all the home games, so that's 7 right there, not including the ones who travelled abroad for games.

Blimey, you're taking this mighty well! I thought you'd be gutted that Bates is still in.
I dont see how what he's done is legally possible, it's a sham.
For the first time in nearly 7 years, someone has total control over the club. This means there is a platform for stability for the first in that period of time. Looking at what Bates did with Chelsea in the 80's to take them to the point of a billionaire buying them as his play thing was amazing. He totally transformed a delipidated part of a town starting with the football club. Give it a few years and we can compete for promotion back to the Premier League as long as he's shrewd with who he chooses as his staff.
I can see how it's legal to do what he did but i agree that it's unfair to the clubs that have no choice to do such a thing.

Most people over here hate them, mostly because we're convinced they've just bought their way to success rather than actually do it honourably under footballing terms. They seem to believe it's their right to be on top all the time, and their attitude going into games seems to not be that they have to go and win the game, but that they already have won it, actually playing the game of football is a bit of a pain.
But they weren't all that popular before the Abramovich era. They were never a team you liked unless you were a die-hard supporter anyway.

Oooohhhh!! United and Everton are in trouble over the Tim Howard transfer! There's a potential points deduction because United stipulated he couldn't be used in the recent game and that's against the rules - it can happen in loan deals but it's forbidden in permanent transfers.
Can't see it being more than a fine though, they can't rim West Ham and then slam the champions-elect really. Funny though.

i thought it was a loan deal?
It was, but Everton signed hinm properly in Feb.
The Premier League will look into Tim Howard's absence from Everton's 4-2 loss to Manchester United on 28 April.
The goalkeeper moved to Goodison Park on a season-long loan last season but agreed a permanent move in February.
A Premier League spokesman told the News of the World: "As Howard's is a permanent transfer there is no reason why he could not have played.
"Had such a clause been included, we would not have allowed it - it would be a case of third party interference."
The 27-year-old American was not allowed to feature against United and was replaced by second-choice keeper Iain Turner who made a crucial error as the visitors overcame a two-goal deficit to win.
And the Premier League are reported to be set to investigate whether an agreement over Howard's availability existed between the teams.
Before the match Everton boss David Moyes appeared to suggest that there had been a verbal agreement between the clubs over Howard's omission.
Moyes said: "While Tim Howard was on loan he would not have been able to play against his parent club, United. But although we have now signed him ourselves, United wanted the loan clause to remain in operation.
"It was partly the reason we were able to tie up the deal for next season as early as we did, we have abided by their wishes."
And Everton spokesman Ian Ross said that as a condition of making the loan deal permanent in February, United had insisted Howard did not play in the game at Goodison Park.
Although Howard's move was completed outside the transfer window, loan deals can be made permanent at any time.
"We certainly have no record of an agreement between Everton and United that Howard could not play on April 28," the spokesman added.
"We will be contacting both clubs as a matter of urgency to find out what has gone on."

I think the only way either club can get out of it - Could be a case of signing a contract which starts at the end of the season while continuing the loan deal till the end of the season.
Edit: Seems strange it's taken over a week for this to come to light. Surely it would have been looked at sooner.
