I'd love to see a Utd - Liverpool final. I'd be willing to risk an eternity of humiliation for the chance of endless bragging rights. And no offence to Liverpool, but I'd rather face them than Chelski.
Oh and Rob, the tickets have already been promised to someone apparently. Still, the waiting list can't be that long... :)

seems quite ok to me, coleman did a mighty fine job for us but things had gone a little flat, only 1 win in the last 15 - not really good enough (even for watford) i think sanchez will do ok for us, at the moment i'm the boat that says he's quite a good manager - especially after the last 3 years with n.ireland, if we keep him permanently then maybe we'll see healy to fulham (sanchez certainly gets him playing) ...and if we don't keep him then i'd happily welcome john collins to fulham :)
From the stories circulating around Easter Road, Collins could soon be unemployed...

The Liverpool games seems to be about as exciting as watching paint dry..
From Bbc updates:
2048: STOP PRESS. Jose Reina actually gets to warm his hands with a save from Jefferson Farfan's low, long-range effort.
"How bad is Patrick Kluivert now if he can't get into this PSV team?"
BBC Five Live's Alan Green
2045: PSV saunter out at Anfield. They don't look like they're in the mood to bombard Liverpool's goal. And we're away.
2030: Half-time at Anfield. Zzzzzzzz.
2027: A bit of excitement at Anfield as Bolo Zenden curls a shot just wide. The Liverpool fans are remaining surprisingly chirpy considering the dreadful game in front of them. It's just a two-hour celebration of reaching the semi-finals for them.
2025: Arsenal must be watching the Liverpool-PSV game and wondering how on earth they managed to lose to Ronald Koeman's side. BBC Five Live summariser Mark Lawrenson reckons they're the worst Champions League quarter-finalists he's ever seen.
"PSV are still playing with one up front. They're not showing any intention of taking a chance against Liverpool."
BBC Five Live analyst Mark Lawrenson

I rushed home tonight, radio off, eager to watch the match that'd been Sky Plus'd... boy am I glad my Dad warned me off it. I saw the goal and that's about it.
I don't understand how PSV can be 3-0 down and not even attempt to launch an attack. They had nothing to lose and everything to gain... and we were never gonna waste unneccesary energy and risk injuries to crucial players.

For sure... but, that said, I think a fair assessment of him is that he's a pacy forward and that's it. He doesn't work for the team... or at least I don't think he does... he doesn't track back ever and his workrate is pretty low but, that said, he's insanely quick and a proven goalscorer. I honestly hope neither. There have been players who match Ronaldo's standard who have been shown the door because of their wage demands or bad attitude.
I don't believe he's gonna leave for a good few years. I can't remember the last time a player moved from Man U because they wanted more of a challenge or they wished to go to a bigger, more prestigious club. Why is that? Because there is nowhere else to go. The English Premiership is the league which provides the biggest test for the world's elite and Manchester United are sitting on top of it.
For anyone that loves Premiership football Ronaldo moving abroad is a bad thing. You know well that I constantly give out about the player on this board but there's no doubting that, if he keeps up this great form he's showing at the minute, he'll be a world great. Plus he's one of the most entertaining players to watch both for Utd supporters and for neutrals.

Owen's record is a bit deceptive. He scored a hattrick in one game, leaving a record of 4 goals in 10 matches as a more realistic return.
Captain Stu
April 16th 2007, 02:49 PM
Owen's still a class forward but I wouldn't say he's truly "world class" anymore - he's lost a good couple of yards off his pace and his awareness seems to be in the toilet and he spends a lot more time chasing the ball around aimlessly where usually he'd be sitting on the shoulder of the last man looking to break the trap and get through.
I can't see United wanting him when they could get younger, fitter, better players for a little bit more money. Plus I doubt Newcastle would even let him go unless someone offers a pretty hefty some, like £20M+ because of (A) what they paid for him and (B) the wages he's cost them and (C) the time and effort they've invested in getting him "fit" again.

If that's not world class, what the hell is?
Theirry Henry 174 goals in 254 games at Arsenal
Alan Shearer 112 goals in 138 games at Blackburn
Andy Cole 55 goals in 70 games at Newcastle
Gabriel Batistuta 168 goals in 269 games for Roma
Christian Vieri 103 goals in 144 appearances at Inter
and then on a totally different level altogheter
Ronaldo 42 in 46 for PSV, 34 in 37 for Barce, 49 in 68 at Inter, 69 in 98 at Real Madrid
Gerd Muller 398 goals in 453 appearances with Bayern
Pele 1087 goals 1120 appearances for Santos
Gary Liniker 370 goals in 460 appearances at various clubs
Eusebio 317 goals in 301 appearances with Benfica
Brian Clough (possibly the least capped World Class player ever) 251 goals in 273 games
Romario 98 goals in 109 games at PSV, 34 in 46 at Barce
In comparison Michael Owen has never scored more than 19 goals in one season. He's a very good goalscorer and a continental class player, but not quite good enough to be a world class striker.

Captain Stu
April 16th 2007, 04:32 PM
All very good examples... but that could be interpretted as saying that there have only been 12 world class strikers ever. Those people would surely be at the very, very top end of the scale but there are other world class players who might not be as proliffic as that.
I get what you're saying, he could score more goals, but his record is spectacular when you consider that, during his time at Liverpool, he was twice struck down for several months with his problem hamstrings.
In comparison Michael Owen has never scored more than 19 goals in one season.
97/98 - 18 league goals, 23 in all comps. [LFC = 3rd]
98/99 - 18 league goals, 23 in all comps. [LFC = 7th]
99/00 - 11 league goals, 12 in all comps. [LFC = 4th] (during this season, his hamstring went)
00/01 - 16 league goals, 24 in all comps. [LFC = 3rd]
01/02 - 19 league goals, 28 in all comps. [LFC = 2nd]
02/03 - 19 league goals, 28 in all comps. [LFC = 5th]
03/04 - 16 league goals, 19 in all comps. [LFC = 4th]
However you look at it, that is the tally of... pretty much... seven consecutive seasons of goalscoring at all levels. Throw into that a career tally of 181 all comp goals in 353 appearances and that says world class to me. Sure, maybe not AS world class as Henry, Ronaldo, Eusebio, etc... but still world class nonetheless.
Something else that might be worth looking at is the team that he was playing in. To me, those records above are of top players playing at top teams during good spells. During the time of Owen, Liverpool were only just coming out of our dodgy spell and still not winning league titles. I bet that can't be said of most of the others. They were pretty much all (I'd reckon) superstar players leading superstar teams to league titles, European cups and domestic domination season after season after season. I've added, in bold, our league position after the goal stats to illustrate this further. I think that's a pretty valid point maself. :)
Also, you forgot Van Nistelcunt - 150 goals in 191 appearances for Man United.
Zippy Ate My Drumkit
April 16th 2007, 04:49 PM
I did mean to post Van NistleyHorse but forgot to look him up.
There's a lot more players out there with comparable records to those I've posted, and those are the players I'd rate as world class.
Owen I'd always class as a Continetal quality player. Lothar Mattaus has a comparable scoring level to him, for example. 57 goals in 113 appearances for Bayern in his first spell, 40 in 112 at Inter. That's a 1 in 2 and 1 in 3 goal per game record as a midfielder/sweeper/defender.
Zippy Ate My Drumkit

I really like Owen as a player and I was disappointed to see him leave Liverpool. I think he was world class in his early twenties...you don't have to be an all time great to be considered world class in my book.

I'm still yet to see enough of Ribery to be all "omgwoah, sign him pls"... he was oh-so-average during the World Cup so I'd be a tad hesitant to see us splash over £15M on him.
I've seen him have one good game, at Under 21 level against England. Can't say im bothered if he comes to us or not.
Pedersen would be a useful squad player, couldnt see him being more than that.

Yeah, he's proven himself in the Premiership... kind of... but he's never really played top level European footie and, without that, it'd seem like a bit of a waste. Plus I couldn't see him as the long-term replacement for Giggs and that's obviously what Ferguson is after, someone to play the left wing for the next 10 years or so.

Torres to snub Premiership move
Fernando Torres is set to snub a move to the Premiership's big four - because he believes Atletico Madrid are heading for the Champions League.
The brilliant young Spain striker, known as 'El Nino', has been linked with a move away from the Spanish capital for the past couple of seasons.
Manchester United are long-term admirers of the quicksilver hitman, while Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona and AC Milan are all rumoured to be pursuing him.
But Torres insists he is not thinking about leaving the Vicente Calderon and wants to achieve his ambitions with Atletico, who are currently sixth in La Liga and pushing for a Champions League spot next season.
In an interview with Madrid daily AS, Torres said: "I don't think about leaving. There have been seasons in which things haven't gone well and you can't wait for the close-season to arrive so you can forget everything and hope that it's better when you come back.
"The important thing is to be where you're happy and to win titles there. I'm convinced I'm going to be able to win trophies here.
"I don't think about leaving to win titles or play in Europe. I want to gain titles with Atletico, because it's the team I love."

Obefami Martins and Michael Owen would be a great partnership as long as the manager new what he was doing.
Unfortunately that manager is Glen Roeder and you just know he's going to be knocking long balls towards two tiny men.
If Roeder got us playing along the floor with those two up front it could be dealy. Martins loves to come deep and then charge forward, and with Owen to play off him he'll actually have a central target to hit for once. He's obviously reluctant to pass out wide because he knows the balls that come back won't be available for him, but with Owen up front there could be some serious danger.
I'm also banking that Owen will finally break the 20 goals mark in the Premiership as long as he can stay fit and as long as Roeder can actually learn some tactical nouse in the close season.
Duff is out for the rest of the season btw.

What do you reckon to the suggestion that Newcastle are signing Sidwell? I can't see Sidwell and Parker playing in central midfield working properly as they're both too sit-back minded... unless one of them is going to adapt and play really deep and sit the other one in front as a Jame Redknapp-type ball playing midfielder.
Torres also prefers to play up front on his own, which would leave Rooney to drop depper and be seriously dangerous.
I find Torres works better with a fast player to run past him, ie Villa, and Rooney just can't do that. It's either Rooney deep or Torres as an almost-target man.

Sidwell does make the odd break forward and scores a few. although i don't think it'd matter really, if Newcastle utilised their wingers properly. (they have a few goodens) they wouldn't need the break from central midfield

If Sidwell plays defensively then Parker can get back to being the box-to-box player he was at Charlton, where he was their top scorer iirc.
Emre almost certainly leaving so I really hope Milner and Zoggy get their chances on the wing. Both are better than Duff and Solano.

I am 95% sure Man United will get Hargreaves, while for a Giggs replacement, they will pursue Nani (who is the supposed next Ronaldo). Their pursuit of Nani must have been a factor in Ronaldo signing that contract extension. If we get a striker, I reckon we will get either Torres or Huntelaar, but I would prefer Berbatov, as I think he would fit into United's style the most and would be the most successful. However, he would require a Carrick-inflated fee, especially after Jol's ridiculous £40m price tag, which is why the hell I don't know why we didn't go for him last season.

Nani would be a very good signing. There's quite a few of these young wingers around at the moment who really look promising.
Jesus Navas of Sevilla
Xabi Prieto of Real Sociedad
Riccardo Montolivo of Fiorentina
Adriano of Sevilla
Silva of Valencia
then obviously you have the likes of Messi, Schweinsteiger and Robben but they're pretty much off the market for Man Utd.

If he has Ronaldo's on the ball skill, I'd have him in a heartbeat... but not if he has his horrendous cheating streak.
Also, I find it laughable that ANYONE can be the next FPR - the fuckers only 22/23! You can only be the "next" someone like that if said person you're being likened to is (A) not playing anymore or at the end of their game (B) a legend.

I'd like to see David Villa play in the Premiership even if it wasn't for Man U. The guy is a touch of class, plus he has a build similar to Rooney's - perfect for the English game.
Man U did go for Berbatov last Summer according to some reports. He rejected the offer - my guess is because they couldn't guarantee him first team football.

Again, I don't think Berbatov and Rooney would work... Rooney isn't a run-past-people forward, he's a sit-back-deeper forward, almost the illustrious "second striker" role but to me he needs someone faster and more penetrating which is why he and Saha work so well together.
Rooney and Defoe, that'd work... but not Berbatov. It's the same way I don't think Berbatov and Keane work, neither one makes the pacy runs that win big games.

I agree with Coleman here, managers SHOULD be able to give their opinions after matches (within reason) about a refs performance.
They shouldn't be able to come out and say that someone was shit or something but there should be no fear about them coming out and saying that a referee has made a 100% wrong decision without fear of an FA charge and a fine.

This was the thing with Wenger that he got charged for today. As he said, he didn't swear at Steve Bennett, or shout at him, he just disagreed with his decision, and he gets reprimanded by the FA for it. I could understand if he'd called the ref a cheating bastard. But he didn't.
Managers should be able (within reason - ie, not accusing them of taking bribes, cheating...) to be able to comment and give opinions on the referees performance after a game.

The FA are too protective, nobody's saying that people should... as you say... be allowed to make wild unfounded accusations but when a ref clearly drops a bollock like tonight - they need to be told.

Ref's should not be untouchable. That just makes them even more prone to mistakes.

Italy have apparently edged ahead in the race to hold the 2012 European Championships.
That's fucking bollocks! The long-suspected Serie A has been blown apart by final, conclusive proof of cheating and max fixing and then there's the well documented crowd problems and the death of that copper, what the fuck has Italian football done to warrant such a reward? Answer: they won the World Cup.
Fucking bunch of useless rimjaws.

It's gotta be interesting. How're they going to sort out violence there for a whole tournament, when they can't stop small pockets of it.
Anyway, Italy didn't deserve it at all. After everything that's happened, there's no way they should have got it, so at least that's one good thing.

according to SSN yesterday Poland and Ukraine had the best security strategy, but they need to improve on accomodation. you're right about the hooligans though, but then again the other bids were just as bad fan wise (Italy, Hungary/Croatia).
i'm glad they got it, Poland and Ukraine aren't actually that bad, both better than Hungary anyway, and giving it to Italy would have been a joke considering recent events

Yeah, I suppose it's the lesser of the evils... but I'll be somewhat amazed if it goes off as well as the World Cup did in Germany. I just can't see there not being problems in Pooland.

Bayern Munich have told Manchester United that they can buy Owen Hargreaves in the summer if they are prepared to pay £18m. (Various)
Oh please, that deal's been rubber-stamped since the january transfer market. Roomynigger's just playing the media game by saying he won't sell... but then he will if United offer lots of money. Everyone knows Hargreaves will be a United player in the summer, they just have to appear to have tried to hold onto him.
Also, I think Carrick and Hargreaves will struggle slightly to play together. Carrick's going to have to improve a helluva lot and stop relying on Scholes.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is considering a fresh move for Benfica winger Simao Sabrosa. (Daily Mail)
Yes pls... but I think I'd sooner have Joaquin... or this Nani chap if he's as good as SkySports claims he is.
Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd does not have to sell any of his players even if Premiership clubs come in for them his summer. (Various)
My arse. If a Premiership team comes knocking, they'll sell. Thing is... they don't have a single player good enough so it's not even going to happen.
Tottenham and Liverpool are both interested in signing Yossi Benayoun, who is expected to leave West Ham in the summer. (Daily Mirror)
NOOOOOOOOO!!! :( He's so ugly... and frankly he's been beyond shite this season.
Chelsea will offer Jurgen Klinsmann £7m a year in an effort to persuade him to become manager at Stamford Bridge this summer. (The Sun)
The question is... why? He showed a lot of promise with Germany, they were probably the second best footballing side of the World Cup for me (Argentina being the first) but he's way, way too inexperienced to take a pressure-cooker job like Chelsea. All that money and all the pressure and expectations that come with it.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has turned down Real Madrid for a third time. (Various)
Mmhmm, apparently they offered him a lot more money than he earns at Liverpool and a massive transfer kitty too. I love Uncie Rafa. :)
The row between Newcastle and the Football Association over the medical costs of Michael Owen's injury is worsening, with various transport bills now being disputed. (Daily Mail)
I wish Newcastle would seriously shut the fuck up over this. While I understand their grievance at losing a player to a long-term injury, it's quite simple really... if they don't want to risk players being injured, recall them from the squad and ruin their international career, drive a big rift between you and them and cause them to leave the club. As if the FA are actually going to pay what they want which is something along the lines of 100% of his wages from the day he got injured until the day he returns to match action. *cough*NOCHANCE*cough*

It's inevitable that we get Hargreaves, and the point of getting him is to have him and Carrick sitting back with Rooney and two wingers in front, and a lone striker right up at the top.
Also, does anyone think that it's impossible to see Moaninho managing Man United after Fergie? I read a posted comment on the Daily Mail alluding to this. I can't say I'd rule it out and I really doubt he will be managing Chelsea next season too.

Poland are a bit nasty, but are slightly more respectful like the hooligans back in the days. Hungary however are just nasty little fuckers and use all sorts of weapons and ambushes. i'm just glad it's not there. 'cos i could see a few certain people from south london looking for revenge after the Ferencvaros UEFA cup game

I couldn't see him managing United for the simple fact that I think as part of his settlement with Chelsea, he'll have to leave the country and manage elsewhere.
He will not be Chelsea manager next season, no way. He'll either win a lot (not the quadruple, that's a silly pipedream) and leave victorious with a big grin on his face or, more likely, leave winning little or nothing, get sacked and have masses of egg on his face.
I think Ferguson will stay on for a few more years and then Mark Hughes will take over.

It's always, always been the same. Same at the Bridge too.
To be fair, we've had at least 5 pens (at least) not given to us this season. We seem to have this rep about no-one getting pens against us and us getting all the pens, but it's so not the case.
Saying that, that was a blatant pen by Heinze last night. They were getting away with fouls through the night though. Scrape down Evra's leg was not nice at all.

Nah, it's true that it's never as unfair as people make out, generally because it's always coming from opposing supporters. Games at Old Trafford have always given out this impression for years - I remember a couple of years ago, when the main jokes about it were about the amount of injury time that kept getting added on. It's just one thing for non-United supporters to moan about, innit.

Sparky's been at it longer, so I'd say he was ahead of Keane in the line. But I think it's not a stretch to say Keane will be a United manager in the future.

He hit out yesterday at suggestions that he was only using Sunderland as a stepping stone to the United managers job.
I think he's behind Hughes anyway, Hughes has managed Wales and now is doing a brilliant job for Blackburn while Keane has only one season of Championship management under his belt.
I think Mark Hughes is destined to be a great manager.

THAT WAS TRUE!!
Ferguson could be seen, game after game when United weren't comfortably winning at the end, berating referees. If they were winning, there was no added time and if they weren't, there would very often be an undeserved 6-7 minutes of added time. That's why the boards were introduced!

Vice-chairman Dein leaves Arsenal
Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has left the club with immediate effect because of "irreconcilable differences" with the rest of the board.
American billionaire Stan Kroenke has bought 9.9% of Arsenal and more shares from major stakeholder Danny Fiszman.
It sparked takeover talk, but chairman Peter Hill-Wood played down moves.
He revealed remaining board members, who own 45.45% of the remaining shares, had agreed not to dispose of their shares for at least one year.
In a statement, Hill-Wood said: "On behalf of the board I would like to express our gratitude to David Dein for the many years of loyal service he has given to the club.
"We sincerely regret that irreconcilable differences between Mr. Dein and the rest of the board have necessitated a parting of the ways."
