Wantaway Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell has told friends his preferred destination is Newcastle. (The Sun)

However, Sidwell, who is a free agent in the summer, is also attracting interest from Chelsea. (Guardian)

I srsly can't see Sidwell in a move to Chelsea, everyone knows they don't like unflashy players. Also, Newcastle seems a pretty stupid move seeing as they have Parker, they need a more creative flare-like player.

Sunderland will move for Manchester United defender Wes Brown if they are promoted. (Daily Mirror)

..... why?

Black Cats boss Roy Keane also wants ex Republic of Ireland team-mate Damien Duff from Newcastle. (Daily Star)

lolzlolzlolzlolzlolz!!!!

West Ham will try to buy Argentine striker Carlos Tevez outright - providing the club avoid relegation this season. (Times)

That'd be a great signing, he's worked so damn hard lately... but I can't see him not attracting interest from bigger and better teams.

Liverpool want Atletico Madrid's £20m-rated hitman Fernando Torres. (Daily Star)

If it's all the same, I'd sooner have Eto'o or Villa pls. :)

Blackburn boss Mark Hughes is a surprise inclusion on the shortlist to succeed Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. (Daily Express, Guardian)

Hughes is the next United boss, everyone knows that.

Captain Stu
April 4th 2007, 08:57 AM
Now Arsenal I could see, as a long-term replacement for Silva... a holding midfielder like Sidwell would further free up Fabregas to roam and play the telling passes that he needs to. Denilson and Cesc in the middle is just stupid and doesn't work in the slightest.

Everton... same as Newcastle I reckon, they already have Lee Toilet and it'd only make them even more defensive and anal. Actually, yeah, he probably will end up there.

You ever been to Eastlands before? My Dad was there (not for a match) about a month ago and did the tour. He said it's absolutely gorgeous and there's so much leg room, especially compared to Anfield.

I'm gutted for Fabio, he's just starting to really cement an awesome partnership with Riise down the left (I love it) and now he's goosed for a long time. :(

I well reckon Crouch has woken up and realised that he HAS to make the most of his height or he'll fall down the pecking order while at the mo he's our most in-form forward by a mile. That's something like 17 goals in 25 starts this season. That is insane.

They said it at the weekend, it's something like that. I'll see if I can find owt.

EDIT: SkySports has 25 starts, 15 sub appearances and 16 goals.

But yeah, that's a damn impressive strike rate and his heading has definately been the weakest part of his game lately and in all fairness he seems to be improving it. *touches wood*

That was the tits, I reckon he's been given a bit more license to go forward these days - he's been having a fair few chances lately - because now we have no concerns about leaving a slow defender at the back.

Agger's the fucking dogs dangly bits, I love him. :)

Gerrard's was quality though, he must've given Kuyt a massive shout because he shit himself. :D All great goals really, another pearl from Johnny Baby... that was just barmy, he was practically standing in line with the right post when he hit it inside the left post. PHWOOOOAR!

Captain Stu
April 4th 2007, 10:12 AM
I dunno, it'd be a historic final and fantastic for English football... but we have such bad luck against United lately that I worry. The last two or three times we've played, we've outplayed them for the whole match and ended up losing.

However, that said, we play a hundred times better in Europe (especially away) than we do in the league so who knows.

:o

You?

rob3000
April 4th 2007, 10:15 AM
As good as it'd be to face them and WIN, can you imagine losing? That'd make it so much worse. And I worry about facing any english side in the CL, so no, don't want to face them.

As you've said, our record isn't great even when we outplay them.

Captain Stu
April 4th 2007, 10:18 AM
Exactly, if we won - it would be THE greatest spectacle ever. We'd be partying until next years final and United would never live it down.

But christ, if we lost, it'd be the most humiliating thing of all-time and it'd be a permanent turd on our European record. There's losing finals and there's losing finals to your biggest rivals.

I don't even want to think about how that would be, it's cringeworthy... especially when I think how many of my family are United fans. :(

United have put in a complaint that there were 2 balls on the pitch when the corner was taken that they conceeded from. If/when we lose, how many Utd fans will blow that out of proportion and demand the goal be disallowed etc?

And again, United fans get mistreated by the cops in the stands at a european game. Both sets of fans taunting each other and banging on the partition between them, and the United fans get the shit clubbed out of them.

From what they showed on Sky, the Roma fans were taunting after they scored, and the United fans rose to it. Both were just banging on the plastic partition though. Cops bashed their way through the United fans, and let the Roma fans just go back and sit in their seats.

They got an away goal, that's what counts.

Sadly, yet again, the papers will be more concerned with the fuckwit, braindead scummy Italian police. I didn't see the match, was at practise, but if half of what I've heard from TalkSport is true (which it almost always is) then UEFA need to stop in, watch some CCTV and identify these cunts and bring them to justice.

A guy, on the floor - almost surrendering - being beaten about the head? Reports of a CHILD being smacked as he fell onto a Policeman and he thought someone was having a dig at him so turned round and clobbered the kid. FUcking sickening.

Undoubtably though this will be blamed on "English fans abroad" - still tarred with the same false tag from 20 years ago, it was wrong then and it's still very wrong now. We have without a shadow of a doubt THE best fans in the world right now.

I can't see UEFA doing anything though, they don't have the bollocks.

Fighting mars Man Utd's Rome trip

Manchester United's Champions League match against Roma was marred by violence involving supporters before and during the game.

Local media reported clashes between fans as they made their way to the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

During the game United fans clashed with police wielding batons.

Manchester United warned fans before the game they could be attacked by Roma supporters, sparking criticism from Rome's mayor.

Local media reported that five people were injured in clashes as fans made their way to the stadium.

Riot police

It was reported that three were English, one was from Rome and another was from Italy's security forces.

The trouble reportedly occurred near two bridges - the Ponte Milvio and the Ponte Duca d'Aosta.

During the game, which Roma won 2-1, both sets of fans could be seen throwing missiles at each other.

The two sets of supporters were separated in one section of the ground by a barrier with riot police gathered on the Manchester United side.

Roma fans surged towards Manchester United supporters

After each goal both sets of fans surged towards the barrier.

At one stage, riot police with shields and batons were seen repeatedly striking Manchester United supporters.

One female fan was seen being pushed in the face by a police officer while another supporter was repeatedly struck with a baton as he lay on the floor.

TV pictures showed one Manchester United fan with blood pouring from his face as others tried to pick him up.

BBC Five Live commentator Alan Green, said during the game: "United fans appeared to charge the police and the police went in.

"It got pretty vicious. We're about 80 yards away but it seems to have quietened down now.

The police got involved with a baton charge and all hell broke loose - you had seats being thrown at the police
Man Utd fan

"We've just heard a loud crash and there is smoke over there. It is very, very nasty inside this ground now.

"I don't know if the Roma fans started this but they are happy now as it is between the police and the United fans." A Manchester United fan inside the ground told BBC Five Live trouble started when Manchester United's Paul Scholes was sent off.

"At the time of the sending off there were missiles exchanged between fans and after the Roma goal their fans charged the United section," he said.

"The police got involved with a baton charge and all hell broke loose. You had seats being thrown at the police.

"Most of the missiles being thrown are bottles which are being sold inside the ground. The number of riot police has probably tripled.

"You really don't know what is going to happen next."

Around 5,000 United fans had bought tickets for the game but a further 1,000 were expected to travel without tickets.

Violent reputation

Before the game Manchester United fans were warned in letters and on the club's website to avoid certain areas of the city as they could be attacked by Roma's hardcore 'ultra' fans.

They were warned to avoid using Rome's underground network to reach the Olympic Stadium, and to also keep away from the Ponte-nenni bridge and the Campo de Fiori.

The city's mayor Walter Veltroni criticised Manchester United officials and said the advice could create a "negative climate".

Italian football has a reputation for violence among its fans.

In February the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) suspended all matches after a policeman was killed at a Serie A game between Catania and Palermo.

Three Middlesbrough fans were stabbed and 10 others hurt during fights with Roma fans at the Uefa quarter finals last year.

Blimey, I just the footage on SSN from a camera that was positioned looking directly at the plastic barrier between both sets of fans.

The Police are ALL on the United fans side, the Iti's have only got stewards on their side.

As soon as Roma scored, they charged the screen and United responded.

When United equalised, the Italians started throwing stuff - allegedly lighters, coins, bolts, screws and stuff like that. People have even claimed there were pieces of fruit with razorblades in. Strange thing is that the very items that were thrown, the United fans were searched and had such things confiscated...

Roma scored again and once again the Italians charged.

United fans were wrong to react but the provocation lies solely with the Roma fans and the Police reaction could have caused a riot.

The Lille match was kinda similar regarding the poor policing, Roma was worse because of the 'Ultras' giving it some and the police not batting an eyelid towards them. The facts are there - you can see all the riot police on the Man U side, you can see the police using unnecessary force on the Man U supporters, and you can see the Ultra's getting nothing done to stop them. We knew a section of the Roma fans were planning to cause trouble, and they did. Yes, it does, on occasion happen in this country, but it's bloody rare. I've been participating in real life, and trying not to get sacked for being useless...

I love standing at matches. Like on saturday, I'll be down St. James Park for the Tamworth game (exciting, I know) and I always stand down there. I've stood down there for FA cup games when we've been over capacity in the stands, and atmosphere was amazing. BUT, on the other hand, seating does work. You can stand up in parts when there's a goal, and you can do the whole chair slamming thing which the Swans fans seem to have adopted. If the games were watched properly, ie. proper gate counts, that kind of thing, you wouldn't get overcrowding. But then you'd also get the kind of crowd movements you got last night.

Riot police were needed to separate both sets of supporters outside the Spanish club's ground before kick-off.

And less than half an hour into the match, trouble erupted in the enclosure housing 4,000 travelling Spurs fans.

Manchester United's Champions League tie in Rome on Wednesday was also marred by violent scenes between police and visiting supporters.

Extra riot police were drafted into the Sevilla stadium in a bid to bring the situation under control.

Seats and punches were thrown as the Spurs fans clashed with the police during the first half.

The trouble continued into the half-time interval at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Around 15-20 riot police moved in as more seats - and punches - were thrown.

The trouble settled down following the departure of the riot police from the Spurs enclosure at the start of the second half.

THE Rangers Supporters Trust have offered their support to Manchester United fans caught up in the violence in Rome, and the fans' group has urged UEFA to investigate policing at all European matches in the wake of complaints from their own supporters this season.

The European governing body is still considering whether to launch a probe into an official complaint from Rangers about heavy-handed policing at their UEFA Cup tie against Osasuna in Pamplona last month. The RST believes the events at the Stadio Olimpico have only intensified the need for UEFA to protect travelling fans.

RST spokesman Stephen Smith said: "UEFA's priorities are back to front. Clubs are fined heavily for minor rule infractions, yet UEFA allow clubs to participate in their competitions with substandard stadia, inadequate stewarding, poor segregation, and policed in a way which would embarrass a dictatorship.

The RST has written to both the Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST) and the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association (IMUSA), offering to share Trust reports on policing, stadium and security gathered from previous Rangers games in Stuttgart, Bratislava, Villarreal and Pamplona.

lol, i'd never wish a beating on football fans from the plod.

seems slightly similar from what happened yesterday, although it appears there was no actual Sevilla fans involved... so less of an excuse this time methinks...Oh damn...I didn;t mean I'm sort of glad they're getting beat by the police, I meant getting beat 2-1!

I don't like spurs but I'd never want their fans to beaten up!

It's blatantly obvious that police stood there with helmets, body armour and batons out creates a negative atmosphere.
This kind of shit never happens in England when foreign teams come here. The main reason is because policing is far more sensible and effective.

Still in shock about Sevillas penalty. I was actually outraged a little.
It was worse than the one given against Bayern.

It might be like Leicester (post-Wycombe defeat in 2000) or Leeds (post-Cardiff defeat in 2001) where their beating in the Champions League final just knocked the death blow out of a few of the squad players who wouldn't ever really get the chance to play for another top team. True. They say they want to fight, but they don't seem to have much in them to give at the moment.

I was saying to my Dad earlier, that Arse is lacking truely experienced senior players. It's all very well getting in these talented youngsters, but they've hardly got anyone to guide them at the moment. And we lack someone up front who's not afraid to shoot at the goal. Van Persie was doing it, but since he's been out for ages, there's no one else there.

Gutted. Given that our upcoming fixtures are Burnley (win), Southampton (lose), Ipswich (draw) and Derby (lose), we're going to be relying alot on other teams results.

A few other things I forgot to bring to everyones attention yesterday:

- Did anyone else notice how similar Calamity James' punch-error was to his effort in the cup final that gifted Cantona a goal? Absolute fucking carbon copy.

- How did Diouf not get sent off? First he deliberatly handles the ball across the line - should've been a yellow, no questions asked - and then he tries to cripple Quasi Neville - could've been a straight red in its own right. Wanker.

Pardew has said to the papers today that he was concerned about a player of his - Alex Song - getting sent off so he spoke to Graham Poll at half time and said, basically, look... if he keeps acting up and it's looking like he might get a second yellow card, can you give me a little signal and I'll take him off?

What do you reckon of that? To me, it's a great idea and more refs should be encouraged to use common sense like that - it's a nice flashback to the old days when refs would tell a team captain things like that rather than just turn into Johnny McCardFlash.

My first reaction at this was, bloody cheek, Pards can't do it, but looking at it more now, I can see that it does make a lot more sense, because that's what they used to do a lot more. You see managers do it a lot - take of players already cautioned if they don't seem to have calmed down. I know that ref's have spoken to managers like that in the past (way past), so why not now. Communication is a good thing.

Obviously, they can't do it if they've just thumped some guy in the face, but the FA should look at it.

Yeah, it wouldn't work all the time but if there's some guy who just won't stop flying around with little niggly tackles, I don't see the harm in the ref just having a quick word with his manager and just saying "one more like that and I'll have to send him off, he's had all his chances".

I think it was SSN yesterday, or over the weekend, and they were highlighting similar things saying that the best way to bring back respect for referees is to STOP this awful trend of trying to have every single rule nailed down in stone and start allowing them to be seen as human beings again. A couple of the ex-pros like Merse and Le Tis were recalling that the best refs they think of are the ones who you could have a bit of friendly back-and-forth banter with rather than them being this unapproachable mass of discipline.

Yeah, it wouldn't work all the time but if there's some guy who just won't stop flying around with little niggly tackles, I don't see the harm in the ref just having a quick word with his manager and just saying "one more like that and I'll have to send him off, he's had all his chances".
Or, if we go back to this idea of doing all this discussing through the captain, then the captain can relay the message.

The problem is this idea of interpretation again in the rules. I think, until the refs know what the rules are in stone, they won't get a good interpretaion of them. The FA wants refs to be flexible because not all of the rules are black and white (offside anyone?), but the problem there, is the difference in what one ref thinks is acceptable, will not be what another thinks. So the continuity is lacking, which is mightily unfair to the teams who don't get any continuity this way, and don't know where their limits are. Take it down to the basics - make the refs follow the rules to the letter for the teams sakes, and send them all to personality school.

And sack Uriah Rennie.

Is he bringing a whole new back-four with him? If not, Newcastle fans really shouldn't give a shit. They need to stop conceeding goals, it's really that simple.
So what the fuck happened with them yesterday?

Pardew has said to the papers today that he was concerned about a player of his - Alex Song - getting sent off so he spoke to Graham Poll at half time and said, basically, look... if he keeps acting up and it's looking like he might get a second yellow card, can you give me a little signal and I'll take him off?

What do you reckon of that? To me, it's a great idea and more refs should be encouraged to use common sense like that - it's a nice flashback to the old days when refs would tell a team captain things like that rather than just turn into Johnny McCardFlash.

Brilliant idea that i have long long long time being in favour of.

ROB! ROB! ROB! I hope this bodes well for the summer:

http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=459991&CPID=23&clid=14&lid=&title=Villa+reveals+Reds+liking&channel=&

Valencia striker David Villa has revealed he would be interested in a move to England if the opportunity arose, with Liverpool his favourite club.

The Spanish international has been continually linked with a move to the Premiership with Chelsea and Liverpool among his suitors.

Villa is one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe after his goalscoring exploits for club and country in the last few years.

Liverpool tried to sign Villa before he joined Valencia and reports suggest they could make a new move for the skilful forward in the summer.

Villa, who says he follows Liverpool because of his friendship with Reds keeper Jose Reina, admits he would consider an offer to play in England.

"I never planned to play in England, but if an offer arrives I'll take a look at it," Villa told Zoo magazine.

"I'm a great follower of football all around the world and I watch lots of games from the Premiership.

"I don't have a favourite English team, but because of my friendships with some of their players, I follow Liverpool most. My favourite player there is my friend Pepe Reina."

Valencia are determined to keep hold of their prized asset and they inserted a buy-out clause of £85million in his contract.

Villa has admitted himself that the price tag on his head is "ludicrous".

"It seems like a ludicrous amount of money! I believe it is too much money," added Villa.

"But football is like that, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. But £70m is insane!"

At the price Chelsea would be the only realistic side capable of buying him funded by Roman Abramovich's millions and Villa is full of admiration for what the Russian billionaire has done at Stamford Bridge.

"Abramovich can spend his own money how he wants.

"He's certainly made Chelsea's fans happier! He's turned them into England's most successful club and I think that he seems like a good person."

:) ?

True enough, Sanchez has done a magic job for Northern Ireland but for me he's still very unproven at club level. All he has to his name (really) is a good cup run during an otherwise poo time at Wycombe (he saved them from relegation, then finished 11th next season, 18th the season after that and left when they started crap in the season after that) and a single VERY JAMMY  winners medal as a player.

But yeah, taking NI something like a hundred places up the world rankings is pretty impressive. Soz.

*

I wonder what the odds were at the start of the season for having an English team (at least one!) in the final? Third consecutive season. And to think, Platini wants to take one of our places away from us! We're clearly the dominant country in Europe at the moment! :)

Here's how I want it to go, same as Phil said actually - Bayern beat Milan tonight and then BUTTFUCK United to progress to the final. We scrape a tough first leg against Chelsea, they get all high and mighty and then we turn them over and win the final 3-1.

I do NOT want us to meet United in the final, it isn't even worth thinking about.

I only started getting comfortable when Rooney's went in to make it 3-0. So many truly played brilliantly. And little Smithy sure as hell inspired the lads to hustle every player for every ball. Even at 7-1 we were timing the tackles and cutting them off, turning them into attacks.

Ah gleeeee. :D

Same again please.

Gotta say well done to Chelsea for pullin it out the bag too. Canizares though.... he performs some sort of superhuman wonder save to push Ballack's header over the bar, only to get cheaply beaten at the near post in the last minute. Gutting.

Class player, too old though. We don't need to be signing players of that age, we need younger players. :)

Bollocks Fa, Bollocks. For once, Polls done something to calm a game down, and you jump on it. Look at what you can do with it, you nonces.

For sure, it's all over the papers this morning about how what he's done is paramount to cheating and favouritism and all that. I'm with you, he did what more refs did and tried to calm a potential situation down before it happens rather than wait for Song to kick lumps out of someone and get sent off which would upset the rhythm of the game. As dirty as I feel for saying it... well done, Poll. :(

If it did, more fool them. Pearce is a helluva nice guy and a decent young manager, I think he's shown that - with the right backing - he can take City where they deserve to be. The problem at the moment is the distinct lack of funds for new players! I really hope they tie up a permanent deal for Mpenza, he's settled in really well, really quickly.

You know, I feel an email to the FA coming on. Not that it'll do anything, but I'm fed up with them being complete nancys and killing all possibilities to make football better again. Did the FA want Song to tackle someone badly in a temper and have something happen like Vaughn's severed artery?

Sounds daft... but would your position as a referee help? Seriously, maybe if more referees themselves started chiming in on these things they might stop being so damn gay down there at FA HQ.

I would hope so. I remember us talking about that in one of the training sessions, and how it's much better to have this line of communication with the managers/players than it is to shut yourself off in the middle and put a barrier between you and the players. The only thing I'd have to say about it, would be that in order for it to be the fairest thing, would be for the provision of it to be laid down at the beginning of the game to both managers. The fact that the discussion came at half time, when strictly speaking, the ref's not supposed to talk to the managers like that, is probably where most of the complaint's come from.

Bugger - there's no email address, theres only a phone number, and I hate phones. Still, I'll gove it a go later. I'll have to write it down first :p

seems quite ok to me, coleman did a mighty fine job for us but things had gone a little flat, only 1 win in the last 15 - not really good enough (even for watford) i think sanchez will do ok for us, at the moment i'm the boat that says he's quite a good manager - especially after the last 3 years with n.ireland, if we keep him permanently then maybe we'll see healy to fulham (sanchez certainly gets him playing) ...and if we don't keep him then i'd happily welcome john collins to fulham :)

Conference name new sponsor (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_conf/6544241.stm)
The Football Conference has ended its sponsorship deal with Nationwide and will switch to online betting firm Blue Square for next season.
A three-year deal has been signed with the new sponsors which will see the end of the Conference's nine-year association with Nationwide.

The Conference will now be known as Blue Square Premier.

The Conference North and South are to be renamed Blue Square Northern and Blue Square Southern respectively.

Football Conference chairman Bill King said: "Our league is the gateway to the clubs in the professional structure in the UK and is an established part of the UK football scene.

"I'm delighted to be seeing a piece of non-league football history in the making and am extremely excited about what this partnership with Blue Square can achieve."

Man United - I'm no United fan, but I hope they go on to win the treble. Brilliant last night, particularly Carrick and Alan Smith.

Gutted for Chris Coleman at Fulham, Sanchez will keep them up though. I reckon Coleman for the Man City job next season seeing as Pearce's job still looks under threat.

Imagine having Colins John and John Collins.

I feel bad for Coleman cos I've always liked him, but yeah the results kinda speak for themselves. Guess they had to make the decision to either keep it going and see what happens, or make a last ditch change and hope for the best. The crowd at the last game probably pushed the decision.

Captain Stu
April 11th 2007, 01:03 PM
It was a shockingly cheap goal and, as much as Chelsea are saying that they deserve the win for their second half performance, you could just as easily say well Valencia deserved it for their first half performance. They should've been 3-0 up at half time with a Mori hat-trick.

Gutted for Chris Coleman at Fulham, Sanchez will keep them up though. I reckon Coleman for the Man City job next season seeing as Pearce's job still looks under threat.

I can't see how any genuine City fans could want Pearce out. He's done a brilliant job with Joey Barton and, even more so, with the grooming of Micah Richards. The problem is that the forwards he's bought in good faith haven't delivered. Can't blame him for that, the team on a whole is playing well - it's just the lack of a 20+ goals per season forward. If they had that, I think City would be pushing for a UEFA Cup spot. Honestly.
