Over the next four years...

Atletico Madrid's chances of holding on to star striker Fernando Torres beyond the end of the season have taken another blow following news that the new Liverpool bosses want to bring the forward to Anfield.

Atleti seem to have already admitted defeat in the face of interest from Manchester United, AC Milan and even Chelsea, and the reaction to this news has apparently been one of resignation.

With Rafa Benitez rumoured to be handed a mammoth 150 million warchest, any chances of Atleti holdinhg on to him have basically vanished.

Torres has another two years to run on his contract, but is available for 40 million Euros, a sum Liverpool are said to be happy to pay in order to pip the Red Devils, who were hoping to land him for even less than that.

The Spanish contingent at Liverpool - including the likes of Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia - is likely to become another factor in Torres deciding to choose Anfield over Old Trafford.

Just as things had become quiet at Hearts...

Celtic plan to sue (http://sport.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=249482007)

CELTIC chairman Brian Quinn is threatening to sue Hearts' majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov over allegations of bribery and corruption which he levelled at the Glasgow club and their Old Firm rivals, Rangers.

Romanov spoke out in a recent interview with the Russian magazine Futbol at the supposed conspiracies within Scottish football, accusing Celtic and Rangers of buying off referees. He also claims some of his own players at Hearts were secretly "working" for clubs in Glasgow.

However, Quinn has totally dismissed the allegations and threatened to take Romanov to court. "I think it is absurd. Absolutely ridiculous. If he is saying this I will take legal advice on this today," said the Parkhead chairman. "The Scottish Football Association will take a clear view of this."

In the interview, Romanov claims that the Lithuanian club which he sponsors, FBK Kaunas, would be equal to the big clubs in Scotland. He said: "Celtic and Rangers? Even Kaunas are a match for them on the pitch. The thing is they have turned football into a type of show business.

"They buy off players and referees. When it comes to weaker teams then nobody can help but if two opponents are equally matched then the referees can have a real influence on the outcome."

Romanov also accused his own players of working on behalf of the Old Firm. Speaking about the calamitous tenure of acting head coach Eduard Malofeev earlier this season, he said: "Well, if you have five people in the team working for Celtic and Rangers then what more is there to say? What could Malofeev have achieved?"

The outburst is likely to cause further recriminations for Romanov at the SFA, who fined him £10,000 earlier this season for comments he made about referees on Hearts' official website. Speaking last October about his club's Scottish Cup victory over Gretna, the Russian businessman questioned the conduct of match officials. He stated: "Last season, you didn't manage to protect the Scottish Cup and gave it to Hearts, despite all the referees' efforts and intrigues."

Romanov has appealed the fine, and his case is likely to be heard by the SFA next month, although by then both Celtic and the governing body could have initiated new actions against him following his latest tirade.

Saw this on Sky sports news earlier. Old G-Nev has really riled up Mel Stein (Football Agents secretary or whatever his job title is).

http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=448520&CPID=8&clid=1&lid=4161&title=Neville+hits+out+at+agents

Manchester United captain Gary Neville has called for agents to be removed from the game.

The England international full-back feels money is being taken away from the game and has called on players to become more responsible for their own actions.

Neville feels The Professional Footballers' Association is a strong enough body to represent the players and wants them to initiate a change in thinking.

"The PFA need to continue to do a lot of the good work they are doing," Neville told Sky Sports News.

"There are a number of things I personally would like to see. I would like to see the removal of agents in the game.

"When we have a union as strong as we have, I think the union could help with the correct education of players and make those young players not so reliant on other people who are going to take money off them.

"The PFA does not want to take money, it wants to give and that would be one of the positives along with all the other good work they do."

Asked if he felt there were any good agents in the game, Neville added: "I don't know many.

"There is a concern for me and there always has been. How a guy can go in and ask for your wage and expect to be given hundreds of thousands of pounds and sometimes millions in this day and age, I can't see it.

"That money is going out of the game. The clubs should keep that money. The players if they are due it should keep it and certainly not agents.

"It won't change until the players become more responsible for their own actions. The problem is that a lot of players believe they need them and it is not the case.

"You need good accountants and good advice, but you don't need to be paying hundreds of thousands of pounds."

Yeah, he is right. In the real world, we have to negotiate our own contracts. I'm sure they can do it too. How hard is it to go,

'yes thank you, I'll sign on the line shall i...'

They need to go back to the old days where the only representative you have is a lawyer to make sure the contract is in order but yeah, you should have to do your own terms and everything.

Just adds more weight to the argument that most current footballers are too stupid to tie their own shoelaces.

It's the life being an agent though, you sort of transfer fees, length of contract and wages and get about 20% for it. Piece of piss.

Every friday they have a programme on called That Was The Team That Was

Tonight it's Raith Rovers who infamously lead Bayern Munich in Muinch in the mid 90's. The team had Paul hartley, Stevie Crawford and was managed by Jimmy Nicholl (The Millwall fans may remember them)

Van Nistelcunt Live Up To His Moody Reputation (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/6370781.stm)

Ruud van Nistelrooy has again spoken of his departure from Manchester United, saying that Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson "kicked his soul".
Van Nistelrooy was left out of United's Carling Cup final team against Wigan last year and he was unable to deal with the snub.

"I exploded and began swearing at Ferguson because I felt he had kicked my soul," revealed Van Nistelrooy.

"That was the moment things died and could never be the same again."

Van Nistelrooy, who left Old Trafford and moved to Real Madrid in the summer, said it was particularly hard to take because prior to that point he had had a great relationship with Ferguson.

"I find it rather tragic," he told World Soccer.

"This was the man who visited me in hospital when I had my bad knee injury while I was with PSV.

"This was the man who wanted me at all costs.

"It was because our relationship was so warm that this situation was so painful."

Every friday they have a programme on called That Was The Team That Was

They interview players, pundits and the management of the team from one specific season.

Tonight it's Raith Rovers who infamously lead Bayern Munich in Muinch in the mid 90's. The team had Paul hartley, Stevie Crawford and was managed by Jimmy Nicholl (The Millwall fans may remember them)

They now reside in the lower leagues of Scotland and Gordon Brown still claims to be a fan.

Nicholl was alright, he took charge of a lost cause. then eventually got sacked by the administrator. HArtley and Crawford were brilliant, however the other two scots he brought in. Jason Dair and Dave Sinclair were piss poorand go down into the 'cunts corner'

Can't believe we beat Oldham today :D

can't say i didn't see it coming. we were always likely to be a bit flat after the bolton game. Poor reffing (for both sides, though, obviously more crucially for us) again. good play by Friedal. Tomas is looking better game by game.
I didn't watch it as I was in work, but my Dad said that if it wasn't for Friedel we'd have trounced them. The Baby Gooners are gonna get a lot of games this year, which is actually a good plus point.

The News of the World has revealed that Liverpool stars Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise were involved in a punch-up when a karaoke contest descended into violence at the team's Portuguese hotel.

It is claimed that the pair traded insults because Riise refused to take the stage, before Bellamy attacked the Norwegian defender's legs with a golf club.

Reds coach Rafa Benitez had to be called to separate the players. The boss was said to be horrified and summoned both to an emergency summit after they sobered up.

Rafa's statement (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/6373689.stm)

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will take disciplinary action and fine any player who breached club rules during their training camp in Portugal.
Benitez's warning follows newspaper allegations of a fracas between Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise during the training trip to the Algarve.

According to the reports the incident followed a dispute during a night out in the resort of Vale do Lobo.

Liverpool play Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Benitez said: "I've made it absolutely clear to all of them the responsibilities that come with playing for this club and the way they are expected to conduct themselves both on and off the pitch.

"The players worked extremely hard at last week's training camp, but we will take disciplinary action and fine any of them who are found to have breached club rules during our stay in Portugal.

"Despite reports to the contrary, the spirit amongst the lads is very good with everyone looking forward to the game against Barcelona on Wednesday.

"We remain totally focused on what will be a very tough game against the defending European Champions."

And in other Liverpool related news (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/6373275.stm)

Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin is to join Liverpool in the summer on a four-year deal, BBC Sport understands.
The 27-year-old, who is a free agent in the summer, has reportedly agreed a four-year deal with Liverpool.

Part of the Ukraine side that reached the World Cup finals in 2006, Voronin has scored six goals in 20 league games for Leverkusen this season.

No-one was available from the German club to confirm further details of Voronin's transfer to Liverpool.

Voronin played twice against Liverpool two years against when Rafa Benitez's side beat Leverkusen 6-2 on aggregate en route to winning the Champions League in 2005.

The Ukraine striker also featured in Leverkusen's 3-2 win over Blackburn in the Uefa Cup on Wednesday.

He played for Leverkusen on Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Hannover in Germany's Bundesliga and missed a good chance late on.

If the deals goes through, Voronin's transfer would be the first under the new regime of George Gillett and Tom Hicks after the American tycoons agreed a takeover of Liverpool earlier this month.

Being honest, everyone was waiting for the real Craig "Self Fulfilling Prophecy" Bellamy to show up and this looks like it could be him.

I mean what the fuck goes through someones mind (besides humping sheep because of your lack of a neck) to make them take a frigging golf club to a team-mates legs over a chuffing go on a karaoke machine? That's beyond retarded.

Two ways this could go - he's already sealed his own fate and will be gone in the summer or this is his one and only warning and he's gotta keep his nose clean.

Problem for him is, now we've got a much better financial backing - we don't need to "settle" for someone like Bellamy.

"We try to avoid commenting on individual cases because, very often, those sending such mail gain pleasure from publicity.

"When we can identify the sender of such materials, they can expect a visit from the police."

It's just a weird one, it doesn't fit into MY plan of how four forwards fit into a Premiership side:

1. The main guy, a target-man of sorts who links forward and midfield well.
2. The fast guy, bundles of pace, often operates out wide cutting inside.
3. The different guy, gives the team a whole new option.
4. The young/old guy, limited chances outside the cups but the young guy knows his time will come and the old guy has a wealth of experience to offer.

To me, that's the magic formula...

Liverpool: (1) Kuyt (2) Bellamy (3) Crouch (4) Pongo, but if he goes then I want us to sign David Nugent!
Arsenal: (1) Henry (2) Van Persie (3) Adebayor (4) Aliadiere (at present) or Bendtner (if Wenger has any sense... seeing as Walcott's being groomed as a winger)
Man United: (1) Rooney (2) Saha (3) Larsson (4) Solksjaer
Spurs: (1) Berbatov (2) Defoe (3) Keane (4) Mido (not for much longer)
West Ham: (1) Ashton (2) Tevez (3) Zamora (4) Sheringham

... and so on and so forth. However, I don't think Chelsea have this yet... really, I see it as

Chelsea: (1) Drogba (2) Shevchenko (3) Kalou (4) .....

They need a proper fast player to run off Dogba and Shevchenko ain't that... really, he should be in the third position as the different option and Kalou would be the fast guy... but Kalou is really, really shit. :)

I can't see Croucho leaving. I think he's pretty set at Liverpool and would struggle for service in some teams that are interested in him.

maybe with the exception of a fully fit newcastle midfield and with Owen or Martins up front with him, personally i think that'd work really well

Aye, £7M.

Personally, I just hate the number of chances he misses... especially headers. When you're 6ft 7in tall you have NO excuse for being inept at heading.

With Duff as well. Good point.

Captain Stu
February 19th 2007, 12:32 PM
If Solano was a bit younger, he'd be pretty much the ideal player to provide service for Crouch - high crosses from the right from Solano and cutting inside runs from Duffman on the left.

But Newcastle stink.

That's what is most suprising about him. He also generally leans on defenders, which is pretty odd too for his height. He is a threat for defenders in the air, but nothing more really.

Captain Stu
February 19th 2007, 12:35 PM
You'd think that someone with his limited pace, immense height and good ball control would make the conscious decision to be a classic centre forward type - edge of the area, head the ball on or knock it down for a midfield runner or take it down gently and play it through. But too many times he comes too deep, turns to try and run at the defense and just gets dicked.

He has flashes of brilliance, that goal against WH was Henry-esque for sure, but it seems like he's trying to be something he's not. Like you say, he should be an in the box type player but he just doesn't do it.

The ref walked away to let the kick be taken. Unless he had specifically told Lille that they'd have to wait for a whistle, then by the rules there's nothing wrong with it at all. And it's like tonnes of other free kick goals that have stood in the premiership.

Arbeloa might play at left back, Finnan left back. Two upfront in Bellend and Kuyt.

I'd pish myself if Liverpool won 1-0 due to a quickly taken free kick - just wonder how long before Stu and erm, Stu change their opinions on that should it happen.

tremendous - i used to work with a jock called archibald rodden ashcroft, his brother was in nick for murrrrder and that was all he ever used to say.

p.s. i'd take a 1-1 by letting them have the disallowed goal allowed, and then twat 'em back at our place.

also, why the fuck have Liverpool decided to give a debut to a new player today? shocking management. He looked totally lost.

Good question. Apparently he had a good game against Ronaldinho for Deportivo.
