I know it was a while ago, but I have to bring a piece of absolute nonsense Sam Allardyce said. Talking about Anelka's goal againat Arsenal (his first) he said something alone the lines of "I'm pleased to say we've got not only a contender for goal of the month, but goal of the season."

There's no way it'll get even goal of the month, Big Sam talks some shite sometimes.

There's a simple reason for it - he chews too much gum and his excess stomach acid erodes his brain. :D

Depends who you support, if for example you're a club like Charlton or Sheffield United who are in the relegation zone and are playing teams way, way above you - then most fans would happily take a draw and a point over a stuffing and no points.

Plus sometimes if it's been a REALLY good game - end to end action, lots of chances, great games by both keepers then it sort of takes the edge off because it could be worth the draw for a really entertaining day of football - especially if you're there.

Yeah, Okay.

Just seems weird to have tie games. We used to have tied college football games before they institued an over-time system and a two-point conversion.

But I guess if there's any sport where ties make sense, soccer(football) is it. I know how hard it must be to score a goal, and that should be rewarded.

Captain Stu
December 8th 2006, 08:27 AM
Sometimes it's incredibly annoying though - some teams don't try to win games, like Aston Villa used to. Away from home they were the most fucking boring team imaginable - they'd practically be playing 9 men in defence and 1 guy hanging on the half way line looking to counter-attack... thankfully they're not like that since they got a manager with an actual brain. :D

yeah, i guess with american sports though, on the most part scoring is quite high, so it'd be more difficult to have draws. sometimes it's frustrating especially if one team really deserved to win. If you're a neutral or just clued up it's easier to say if a draw if a fair result.

Don't get fooled by 0-0 draws either though, sometimes they can be some of the best matches you see

A draw in soccer does not necessarliy mean that both teams share the benefit. As Stu said, sometimes one team will be extremely happy with a draw.

In cup competitions, particularly the latter stages of the European Champions League, draws can send teams out of the competition. In the knockout stages two teams play each other twice - home and away. If the aggregate score is a tie then the "away goals" rule comes into play. Sometimes this can have games - particularly the return tie - on a knife edge which is really exciting to watch.

I love baseball games where it's practically 0-0 for the first seven/eight innings, then the batters turn it on for the closers.

Doesn't happen that often but when it does it makes for great watching.

Mourinho really knows how to build team morale in those without any and keep the rest of the teams already massively inflated egos pretty well topped up:

http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=433954&CPID=8&clid=8&lid=2&title=Jose:+Sheva+not+untouchable

Jose Mourinho admits there are nine 'untouchables' in his Chelsea team, but Andrei Shevchenko is not on that list.

Shevchenko has struggled to recapture his best form since joining from Milan for £30 million and has been forced to refute rumours he wants to return to Italy.

And Mourinho has now confirmed that the Ukrainian striker is not guaranteed a place in his best side on current form.

Highlighting Shevchenko, and the right-back position, as areas of concern, the Chelsea manager insists he selects his team based on his players' form.

"We need to give Sheva time," said Mourinho in an interview to promote Children's Cancer Awareness Month, a campaign run by CLIC Sargent, the UK's top children's cancer charity.

"Sheva is not untouchable because of the way he is playing. I play the best players at the time.

"Makelele is untouchable because of the way he plays. Essien is untouchable because of the way he plays. Frank Lampard is untouchable because of the way he plays.

"It is not because I love them. It is because of the way they play. Michael Ballack is untouchable because of the way he plays. John Terry is untouchable, Ricardo Carvalho, Ashley Cole, Drogba, they are untouchable.

"The right-back is not untouchable. That is why I try this and that. But, at this moment, we have nine untouchable players. Players pick the team, not me."

Mourinho also dismissed the notion that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich pushes him to play Shevchenko.

He added: "He'd never do this. If he does this, it's because he doesn't trust the manager.

"If he doesn't trust the manager, he has enough money to sack me, to give me my compensation, send me home and bring another one in."

BALLACK!? He's been fucking wank this season in comparison to about 25340325232 other players.

Oh, and apparently City are the next club to be linked with foreign investors:

http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/07122006/2/photo/man-city-confirm-talks-potential-investors.html

Manchester City have confirmed that they are in the early stages of discussions with a possible investor in the Premier League club.

Chairman John Wardle told the club's AGM on Thursday that he was hoping to secure significant new funds for the club which has long lived in the shadow of illustrious neighbours Manchester United.

"Anyone coming to the table has got to be an appropriate custodian of the club. We can't put any deadline on this particular, potential transaction," Wardle said in a statement on the club's Web site (www.mcfc.co.uk (http://www.mcfc.co.uk)).

"We need to understand more about the investor or set of investors that we are talking to make sure that they are appropriate custodians for the club.

"The main thing is that all parties understand that the club is the most important thing."

Chief executive Alistair Mackintosh said that the club had been looking to bring in investment for some time, but stressed any deal was a long way off.

"I think comparing it to a 90-minute football match we are 10 minutes in," he said. "There's a long way to go, a lot of due diligence to be undertaken.

"What we've always looked to do is bring in extra investment into the club, so, frankly, we can invest in the team and spend more on players.

"We want to push the club forward so we can match the ambitions of our fans."

Last month West Ham United became the latest top flight club in England to be sold to a foreign investor when Icelandic businessman Eggert Magnusson paid 85 million pounds for the debt-laden east London club.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Fulham, Aston Villa and Portsmouth also have foreign owners, while Liverpool are in talks with Dubai International Capital, the company owned by Dubai's ruling Maktoum family.

I think this is long overdue, City have a good manager, a few class players, some loyal supporters and a fabulous stadium - they need a reasonable chunk of money ploughing into the first team (and indeed to continue the youth development) in order to get them back up the table though and that's something I'd like to see.

At the very least, Pearce needs a BIG summer transfer budget (I'd say £20M+) in order to sort out his defence and sign some more creative attacking players - namely a solid midfielder to work with Barton and a goal-scorer.

Gold angry at Mourinho suggestion

Birmingham chairman David Gold has branded Jose Mourinho's call for Premiership reserve teams to play in the Football League "disrespectful."
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger backed Mourinho's plea for Chelsea reserves to play in the Football League.

But Gold said: "Jose often talks about requiring respect, but this is disrespectful to Football League clubs.

"It's not the Football League's problem if his players aren't getting enough competition," Gold told BBC Five Live.

Mourinho claimed English football should follow the example of Spain, where big clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona are allowed to field their B teams lower down the professional football ladder.

The B teams cannot be promoted, and they are not allowed to enter Spanish cup competitions.

Mourinho had said: "I would love to see it.

"I can tell for sure that if that happened players like Lassana Diarra, Mikel John Obi, Salomon Kalou, when they are not selected for the first team, they have a competition to play in a different level. So they should have a look."

Wenger echoed Mourinho's call, saying: "It's a very good idea.

"I've said it many times because it happens in France. In France there is two divisions difference and you cannot come up.

"It gives them competition against teams who are fighting for the top level and instead of giving players out on loan, you can get them good competition."

But Gold said: "That may be fine for Jose and I'm sure it would be nice for him if he had three or four teams playing in the League.

"Where would he expect his team to enter the League?

"To allow it to happen, straight away you would have to dump a club into the Conference to make room."

Does it state in the rules that the player has to be going towards to goal?

No doubt he was the last man, but if Martins would have gone past him, I think another defender would have had time to get back, because of the position on the pitch.

There are many many many grey areas in the rules.

But for what it was, it was a foul, and he was the last man.

Five clubs are interested in signing former Hearts defender and captain Steven Pressley, BBC Sport understands.

Pressley, 33, left Hearts on Saturday after he had spoken of dressing-room "unrest" under majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov in October.

He had been at Tynecastle since 1998 but was omitted from the squad for November's game at Falkirk amid reports of a plot to remove him as captain.

The source refused to disclose the names of the clubs courting Pressley.

Pressley has been reportedly linked with Dundee United but Craig Levein's side were not one of the five interested clubs, according to the source.

Pressley is ineligible to play for any new employer before the opening of the transfer window in January.

Pressley's last game for Hearts was in November's 0-0 draw at Inverness Caledonian Thistle last month.

"I have enjoyed my time at Tynecastle enormously and will be sad to leave," Pressley told the Hearts website on Saturday.

"Particularly, I would like to thank the fans for their support during my time at the club."

Pressley lifted the Scottish Cup in May following a successful season and many point to his presence in the dressing room as the main reason for that run of good form.

Hearts head coach Valdas Ivanauskas had been silent on the issue but had recently claimed that Pressley was the club's "cement".

"It has been a difficult few weeks for both the club and Steven," said Ivanauskas.

"We recognise the tremendous contribution that Steven has made - both as a player and as captain at Tynecastle over the years - and we wish him all the best for the future."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4 of the teams interested in signing him are:

Dundee Utd
Derby County
Leeds Utd
Rangers

I like the usual Sports Centre lineup - it's a better balance now with having Le Tissier and Merson on with Thommo and, erm, the Scottish guy who's name I forget. Is it Charlie Nicholas? I think so.

Can't blame them. He screwed them over. He blatently lied to them all season, whilst out injured most of the time, and then somehow got himself into the CL final, pretty much his first competative game back as a thinly veiled attempt by Wenger to get him to stay, and then he left and kept screwing everyone over with his book. I would say, he is the least liked player in Britain right now. He's not liked for what he did, no matter which team he played for.

But you can't deny that he obviously had something last year to instill belief into the players. What's changed since last year, other than the board feeling they could push 2 players into the side that obviously didn't want to be there.

I think that Pardew's been pushed, no matter what he says, into unsettling his team by playing Tevez and Mascherano. You can't put the poor form solely on them but it really didn't help things - Mascherano was about as useful as windscreen wipers on a sub and Tevez is too ball greedy. it was the honeymoon period, Reading are doing it at the moment, and Wigan the year before it always tends to happen to one team who get promoted.

This season was always going to be a struggle for west ham. i gurantee even Padew knew that, the fans just seem to think they're bigger than they are

I was chatting to Trevor Brooking, and even he knew that this season was going to be very difficult for Wham.

Celtic make approach to Pressley

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has met freed Hearts captain Steven Pressley in Glasgow about a possible January move to the Scottish champions.
A club source told BBC Sport: "It's too early to say they are in talks. Steven simply had a natter with Gordon, whom he knows from his time at Coventry."

Pressley plans talks with other clubs in the coming week.

It is understood there has so far been no contact from Southampton or Derby County for the Scotland defender.

The English clubs were among the first to be linked with the 33-year-old following his acrimonious departure from Tynecastle.

But, with Pressley's wife expecting a new child within the week, he will take his time to make a decision about whether to remain in Scotland or move to England.

Southampton manager George Burley told BBC Sport: "I'm aware of Steven Pressley's situation and I'm monitoring it.

"But I would have to wait and see if we could do anything in the January transfer window."

Despite leaving Hearts at the weekend, Pressley is ineligible to sign for another employer until the opening of the transfer window.

Pressley's last game for Hearts was the goalless draw way to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in November.

The Scotland international joined Hearts in 1998 but recently fell out of favour after voicing concern about the way the club was being run by majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov.

Rangers were thought to head the queue for the services of Pressley, who has been capped 27 times by Scotland and began his career at Ibrox.

Dundee United, Dunfermline, Leeds and Cardiff have also been linked with the centre-half.

Sheffield United, Reading and Watford are among the Premiership clubs said to be keen, but Pressley could be interested in joining up with his former boss at Hearts.

Burley has a record of attracting players who previously played under him.

Former Hearts midfielder Rudi Skacel, Spurs striker Grzegorz Rasiak and ex-Derby playmaker Inigo Idiakez joined forces with their previous boss in preference to Premiership clubs.

He cant break Europe until hes 18, which is June i think. Not bothered if he ends up at United or not, think he would just be in the reserves for three years then go on loan like Rossi.

He won't go to United, he got rejected - main reason is his lack of height and strength. He's too lightweight for the Premiership.

Another little update regarding Alex Curran/ Steven Gerrard.

The press will not release anything about this, probably ever, because SG is such a respected player, and is held in such high regard, that the England camp would completely close it's doors on the press pretty much forever.

Which makes sense, seeing as the England team are non-profit, and therefore need no exposure anyway, so the papers need the team more than the team need them.

Not the England team as a whole, as in, The England team in 20 years time won't have access, but the current batch of players won't talk to the press. Eg, Rooney, JT, Lampart, Rio etc will completely shun the press, or so I am lead to believe.
