Liverpool weren't going to pick themselves up from the first goal. They haven't played with the right attitude at all this season. Arsenal have been going for it this season - they may have lost a couple of shocking games, but they're third despite it all.

Didn't see the match, glad I didn't and didn't watch Match Of The Day - were the papers right (hell, even Wenger said it) that it was a much closer match than the scoreline indicates and the first goal changed it all?
What really gets me is that three defenders scored, what the fuck is up with that?
And yeah, Zenden? Against Arsenal? What the fuck is the point in that, Rafa? What was that EVER going to accomplish, really? Nothing, that's what... play Gerrard in the fucking middle for fucks sake before we lose all fucking hope of qualifying for the fucking Champions League.
Fucks sake, I didn't honestly think we'd win but no way in hell did I expect a seeing-to like that.
Fucking wankers.

I watched with my brother. It wasn't really a seeing-to. The old "goal changes the game" cliche springs to mind. You more than matched them in the first half, and same in the second half until the goal, you just weren't able to get your shots on target... They got the first goal, which of course changed it all cos they could then counter-attack.
The Gallas goal was just complete confusion between Gerrard and Riise about who should be marking Gallas and Henry - they both went to Henry.
Oh and I know the commentators shrugged off Bellamy's non-goal in like the 82nd minute (ruled offside when I'm sure it wasn't). But that goal coulda done alot to Bellamy's confidence, or even to the match. A lot can happen in 10 mins when a team is on the chase. Ah well.
Van Persie, you dirty shite, trying it on with the sly handball at the start of the game. Tut tut.
Carragher could have got sent off for 2 yellows, but ref was lenient after the second challenge.
Ref's injury and getting physio for a coupla minutes did make me larf. :D

Me and my Dad have been chatting about ze Arsenal game, apparently Gonzalez was absolute turd, which is really fucking annoying because I like the guy, but what do you expect? He's started against both United and Arsenal but in the meantime doesn't get a run in the team! How's he supposed to get some form without a run of games in the team and, more so, he still doesn't understand the league and the team, let alone have a deep enough understanding to play effectively against the top sides.
We reckon there's a battle of wills at the moment, Gerrard and Benitez - despite what they say publically. Rafa seems to be testing Gerrard with every game - play him wildly out of position and see how he reacts to it - and it's gonna force him out. I honestly don't think he'll be here season after next if this shit continues, no offense to Rafa... but Gerrard's a lot more likely to lead us to the title than he is. Take Gerrard out our team and we won't win fuck all for the next 10 years or until we replace him.

What exactly did Mike Newell say? Did he just say this chick linesman shouldn't be doing it because she's a silly woman?

It was a stupid quote in the heat of the moment. He basically admitted to being sexist and that women shouldn't be officiating at all.
"It is bad enough with the incapable referees and linesmen we have but if you start bringing in women, you have big problems," said Newell.
"This is Championship football. This is not park football, so what are women doing here? It is tokenism, for the politically-correct idiots.
"She should not be here. I know that sounds sexist but I am sexist, so I am not going to be anything other than that."
I'm not going to comment on it. (although I might)

Obviously Newell should get a slapped wrist - he's just alienated a whole section of referees in Britain, but it's not worth losing his job over. I'm not that offended.

One day, he might realise that he has no future at Chelski and, now, he'd probably struggle to get in the Arsenal side too with the way that Hleb is playing. Well, not so much "struggle" as he wouldn't instantly walk into it as he would've 2 years ago.

You're probably right. I think Duff leaving gave him a false hope because he thought he'd moved up a notch in the pecking order... but now they're playing with three central midfielders in Fatty, Ballache and Essien and using both Dogba and Shevcanthitabarndoorko, Shaun doesn't have a cat in hells chance.

I reckon:
Robinson
Cole

Sucks a bit, as good form as Johnson is in... or was... he's taken a dip, no goals in his last 7 games or something while Crouch continues to score? Well harsh on Crotchy. Also shit that Lennon's had to pull out injured too.

SWP has ruined his chances for now - luckily if he leaves now, then he'll have time to get back near to where he was. It's such a bloody shame. And everyone saw this happening other then SWP and Wrighty.

Basically the same sort of formation that Chelsea play, a midfield spine of three players, one defensive (Carrick), one ballplayer (Fatty) and one runner (Gerrard) with two wide forwards (Cole and Johnson) flanking a lone striker (Rooney).
If that's right, it's a fucking stupid idea. Rooney is not, and never will be, a sit-up-top forward, he should be playing OFF someone else, like Crouch.
Also, 4-4-2 all the way.

Yep. Johnson must be loving the fact that all his appearances are with him stuck out on the right.
He seems to want to play both Lampard and Gerrard in the centre, which unforunately means a 5 man midfield (with Carrick/Hargreaves/Parker) as they don't defend enough. I think this is a crap option.
Another option is to play one of them on the wing, which is a waste of Gerrard when on the right (plus Lennon is better on the right when fit). Its also not really possible to play Lampard on the wing as he is probably too slow (again, Lennon and Joe Cole are better up the side).
The only real option seems to be to play 4-4-2 and drop either Gerrard or Lampard (basically Lampard) against the good teams where we need a defensive midfielder (Carrick/Hargreaves/Parker). Unfortunately this would require some balls.
I'd like to see (when fit):
GK. Robinson
DR. Richards/Neville
DC. Ferdinand/Carragher
DC. Terry
DL. Ashley Cole

Annoying thing about playing Gerrard out wide-right is that he's taking someone elses place, ie, Lennon. When all our midfielders are fit, he'd prefer to play Cole, Lampard, Carrick or Hargreaves and Gerrard which means Lennon has to sit on the bench. Complete and utter fucking waste.

Yep. Its stupid. He has to play 4-4-2 with Lennon.
It should be
MR. Lennon
MC. Gerrard
MC. Hargreaves/Parker/Carrick
ML. Joe Cole
He should only start with Lampard if:
a). Gerrard is injured
b). its against a weak team and we can get away with not playing the defensive midfielder.

Good lord, I couldn't agree more. :)
However:

Big Kev definately deserves a chance, I reckon a central midfield partnership between him and Stevie could be lethal. We'd struggle to find better wingers than Cole and Lennon (with SWP on the bench to come on and replace either of them if needs be) because Cole is so good with the ball at his feet cutting inside and Lennon provides the pace and width of a natural winger.
Personally I think Nolan should be ahead of Carrick because he plays a better role in midfield than Carrick who's jsut so average. He's too anal to be an attacking midfielder but too weedy to be a defensive midfielder... he's like Didier Deschamps in his water-carrier role only much less effective.
Also, Robinson should consider himself fortunate that Kirkland asked to be excused because his wife is due to give birth this week or I reckon he would've been in with a good chance of starting. If not Kirkland, Carson should get a chance.
I swear, the dozen or so regular posters in this thread could easily have got England to at least the semi-final of the World Cup.
We should stage a football-coup and sieze back our natural team from Quiffy McNobrains.

They should split his wages between us - we'd be doing it for the love of the job :D
Agree about Nolan. This would be the perfect opportunity for him tonight to get a game without any pressure and show what he can do. And there's no harm in having SWP start if that's the way he's going to go. Holland are a team you've got to attack right from the start, despite the fact that they're missing a couple of key players.
Is Hargreaves out for the season? I miss him.

Too right about tonight, it would be so perfect for Nolan because it's a game he could really dig his heels in and get stuck into. The Dutch threat is gonna come from their creative midfielders like Van Persie linking up with Kuyt (in good form) and Van Nistelhorse (in absolutely amazing form). We need a fecking ball winner and Nolan is definately one of those.
I think Hargreaves is due back in training soon, they reckon he'll be fit before christmas at the last I heard, ie, ready to undertake a medical at United before the January transfer window closes.

Don't think so, as far as I know it's a proper temporary contract for a set amount of time unless the club the player is contracted too asks for a recall in which case the other club still has to agree to it, the contract club can't just pull them back.

Steven Gerrard has revealed that he is likely to get the chance to operate in the centre of midfield for Liverpool.
England star Gerrard has been asked to play in a number of different positions by Rafa Benitez in the last couple of seasons, but an injury to Mohamed Sissoko has opened the door for a return to the centre of the park.
Gerrard again played on the right against Arsenal on Sunday, with Boudewijn Zenden filling in for Sissoko, but the club's captain has revealed that he will get his chance to shine in the middle in the near future.
"I spoke to Benitez and he said I will get a lot more time in the middle now Sissoko is out injured," Gerrard told Sky Sports News.
Liverpool travel to Middlesbrough at the weekend and Gerrard is looking for The Reds to show improvement on the road.
He added: "We need to start picking up performances on the road for Liverpool, so we look forward to the game on Saturday."

lollerz, £100 says I'd score on my England debut against San Marino.
Also, Van Basten - as much as I love the guy - is a stubborn prick for not picking Van Nistelrooy because they had some falling out. The only consolation he has is that Kuyt is fucking awesome... but, for me, the Dutch performance last night was absolutely pathetic. I think it was Lawro the Nazi who summed it up best when he said "I've never seen a Dutch team that couldn't pass the ball before"... the formation was utter garbage, especially seeing as how Robben NEVER covers back and left the left-back completely exposed. If they changed to a nice 4-4-2 with Kuyt and Van Nistelrooy up front - that'd be killer.

Ibrahima Sonko and Stephen Hunt have received a series of letters at the club's Arborfield training ground.

According to the Reading Chronicle newspaper, one letter said: "We are going to kill you for what you did to our players."
Reading players treated the first letter as a joke and pinned it up on the door of the training ground dressing-room.
But when subsequent letters arrived, players were told to treat the threats seriously and the club called in the police to investigate.
Cech is not expected to play again this season after sustaining a fractured skull in a first-minute collision with Hunt in the game at the Madejski stadium.
Cudicini needed oxygen after being stretchered off in a last-minute collision with Sonko, and only recently returned to action.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho hit out at Hunt's challenge, but neither Hunt nor Sonko faced any sanction from the Football Association.
Winger Hunt, on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, said: "The club is dealing with all my letters and I don't want to say any more."
Sonko confirmed he had received a letter but made no further comment.
Chelsea's spokesman added: "Naturally, we condemn any threats of this nature and we will assist the police fully if - and we stress if - there is any evidence linking theses threats to any of our supporters."
Bloody harsh that is.
Nyaw, how festive.
Well I wanna play the unconventional and slightly risqué 2-3-5 formation.
Carragher and Terry at the back, a midfield of Nolan, Gerrard and Parker and then a front-line of Rooney, Crouch, Cole, Lennon and me.
I'd vote for that. Can't be any worse than anything that's already been done.

When is the off-season for an average English Premier football player? How long is it? Doesn't seem that long.

Also, there is the World Cup and European Championship every four years (World Cup: 2006, 2010, 2014 etc, European Championships: 2008, 2012, 2016 etc). These are conducted during the offseason and means that the Premiership players that represent their countries (and there are a lot of them) get even less time off during those years.

Gerrard set to get central role
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed he is set to finally be handed a central midfield role.
Manager Rafael Benitez has deployed Gerrard on the right flank, prompting reports of a rift between the pair.
Bolo Zenden was preferred in central midfield in the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal, even with Momo Sissoko out injured.
But Gerrard said ahead of the match at Middlesbrough: "I spoke with Benitez and he said I would get a lot more time in the middle now Sissoko is out."
Gerrard also figured in the centre in England's 1-1 draw against Holland in Amsterdam.
He then took the opportunity to stress his preference for the centre rather than on the right flank, a move by Benitez that has been a source of debate as Liverpool have struggled in the Premiership.
Gerrard said: "I always enjoy it there in the middle. That's where I feel I can get the best out of myself.
"The formation worked and the positive thing is we know we can use another formation now with 4-3-3 as well as 4-4-2.
"We need to build on this performance for the next qualifier."
Surely this is a little too late now to save Liverpool's season.

It's a good move for Liverpool (and England if McLaren follows suit) but yeah, it's too late to save our season. We can still turn things around and ensure qualification for the Champions League but, with Arsenal now hitting form, 3rd place is a long stretch and we're probably best aiming at 4th again.
Really fucking annoyed at how our away form has cost us this season, we were tipped by nearly everyone to be the closest rivals to Chelsea this season and we've completely bollocksed it up by being so wank away from home. At Anfield, we're as great as ever but I just dunno why we can't translate that form to the away fixtures.
Oh well, hopefully this move will mean more gametime for Gonzalez and Pennant so they can settle into the team and find some form, then we'll be a team to contend with.

You're absolutely right, it never should have gone down like this. :(
Benitez has tried too soon to recreate his old Valencia team by building it around Sissoko in the middle instead of building it around Gerrard as any sane person would have. The strange thing is that Gonzalez, Alonso, Gerrard and Pennant is pretty much the exact same style of team that he's used to - an attacking midfielder, a defensive midfielder and two line-hugging, pacy wingers.
I love Dirk Kuyt.

Bit of a weird one the other day at Real Madrid, in line with Capello rebuilding the weak areas of the team - they signed very hotly-tipped Brazilian left-back, Marcelo, but then farm him off on loan to Racing Santander and give Roberto Carlos a new contract despite him being more over-rated than ever and the age of 34 (I think).

Wright-Phillips sets Chelsea aim
Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips insists he is focused on earning a first-team place at Stamford Bridge.
The 25-year-old has made two starts and nine substitute outings this term with England boss Steve McClaren expressing concerns at his lack of football.
But Wright-Phillips told the club's official magazine, Chelsea: "I'm just getting on with it, getting my head down and working hard.
"I'm doing my extras, just so that when my opportunity comes, I'm ready."
He added: "I often stay behind after training and try to do a bit of everything really.
"Shooting, crossing, that kind of thing, the elements that are central to my game. It is frustrating, of course it is.
"But I always wanted to be a footballer and when you're a footballer you have to take the rough with the smooth. This is obviously a rough patch but it's down to me to make it smoother."
Wright-Phillips is putting a brave face on his lack of first-tem football since arriving at Chelsea from Manchester City in July 2005.
"People often ask how it affects my confidence but I can quite honestly say that it hasn't dented my confidence at all," he said.
"Yes, regular games help you get into your stride and can give you some much-needed rhythm.
"But it's not affected my self-belief. I've always believed in myself and what I can do.
"And that belief comes from the people I have around me, my mum, my dad, my brothers, my children, they all play their part. Despite what people might think, I'm feeling all right to be fair.
"The standard of players here at Chelsea speaks for itself. But at some time the tables have got to turn in my favour and that will only happened if I keep working hard, if I keep trying and believing.
"I can't let my head drop. And if I can keep that mindset, my time will eventually come."

The future of the Livingston striker, Robert Snodgrass, has been called into question after he turned down the chance of a trial with Barcelona.
The 19-year-old has yet to play a match for the club this season after making an immediate impact on the SPL last term.
Injuries and reported off-field troubles have been curtailing his development.
Snodgrass, who was given time off by the Almondvale manager, John Robertson, recently after becoming a father, has already rejected moves to Blackpool and Plymouth but his decision to decline a trial spell with the European champions has stunned advisers, who fear he could disappear from the game altogether.
Allan Preston, the former Livingston manager who advises the teenager, had agreed for the agency which also deals with boxer Scott Harrison to set up the training stint at the Camp Nou.
Preston, however, believes the refusal of an opportunity most young players would jump at is symptomatic of a greater malaise in the youngster's make-up.
"If Barcelona come knocking and you turn them down, it just shows you what ambition you've got.
"If he does not watch out, the way he is going he'll end up being out of the game and another case of wasted ability.
"I don't think Robert is behaving correctly or in the right manner for a professional football player, and that is a concern for many people."
Snodgrass burst on to the SPL scene with two goals against Rangers in a 2-2 draw last October and was rewarded with a deal which is understood to make the Scotland Under-19 cap the highest earner at Livingston.
However, he could have played his last game for the West Lothian side after concerning officials with his private life, making his decision to knock back Barcelona all the more remarkable.

Rockers to sponsor under-10 team
A Lincoln boys football team have won a sponsorship coup with a difference after striking a deal with heavy metal band Motorhead.
The Greenbank under-10s B team have the internationally renowned band's name on their shirts along with the band's motif - a skull named Snaggletooth.
The North Hykeham team also run out to the band's famous Ace of Spades track.
Team manager Gary Weight said the deal came about as he used to know lead singer Lemmy.
"It was from a bizarre idea one evening. I sent an email off to them and they came back and said it was a great idea.
The hope is that we can go out on the football pitch and terrorise the opponents
Manager Gary Weight
"I knew Lemmy years ago and for him, I think the thought of a football team running out with the Motorhead logo made him chuckle a bit, so that's where it's come from," said Mr Weight.
He is hoping the deal will draw inspired performances from his team.
"The hope is that we can go out on the football pitch and terrorise the opponents and come away worthy winners," he said.
The junior players will have a team photograph taken with the band ahead of their Rock City gig in Nottingham on 19 November.
The team, which are second in the league, also listen to other rock acts, such as the Kaiser Chiefs and Coldplay, before games.

FA dismisses new Wembley doubts
The Football Association has dispelled fresh concerns over Wembley Stadium despite a report that says the project was close to financial collapse.
Auditors for the FA and subsidiary Wembley National Stadium Ltd are said to have had serious doubts following the row with builders Multiplex.
Despite a settlement with Multiplex, any further delays could force WNSL to renegotiate its £457m loan.
But an FA spokesman said: "We are now in a strong position to move forward."
The FA's and WNSL's auditors Deloitte and Touche reportedly had concerns over signing off the company as a going concern following the delays and long-standing dispute with Multiplex.
WSNL and Multiplex have since reached a £36m which provides assurances the stadium will open in time for next May's FA Cup final.
Despite that settlement, the accounts still express serious concerns that if the stadium is not completed by March, WNSL may have to renegotiate its bank loans.
The FA spokesman told the Daily Telegraph: "We are in a healthy financial position, events have moved on significantly since the annual report was written.
"The FA and WNSL have reached an agreement of differences with Multiplex as well as successfully renegotiating the bank loan."
Multiplex's failure to deliver the stadium by the end of September meant the FA had to renegotiate a £40m loan repayment with a syndicate of banks headed by German bank West LB.
And the Telegraph quotes WNSL directors as saying: "There exists material uncertainty that may cast significant doubt on the company's ability to continue as a going concern."
WNSL have borrowed £317m, with a further £140m loan from the FA who have also agreed a financial package for the stadium.
This involves the FA paying £23m in the stadium's first year of operation, and an annual £13m afterwards.
Ha, ha, ha, ha :D

The only real error the FA made here is giving the contract to multiplex, who couldn't build a house out of lego. other than that, it's really been out of their hands, they should have bit the bullet and told Multiplex to sod off at the start

My you gunners are a foul-mouthed bunch.
Every 15 seconds it was "OH YOU FACKING CANT" everytime the ref gave anything to us.
TO be fair, you guys were crap for 60 minutes. You had your tactics ass backwards. All this passing rubbish, I don't think you had a shot within the box from open play in the first half.
Then sometime during the second half you went to plan B. Long throughballs down the middle.
All of a sudden you get 3 million shots on goal (which you dutifully wasted).
definitly 2 points lost - you could have scored 6.
Newcastle
Ok, let's put this simple. If Arsenal had any sort of final ball we'd have been 6-0 down.
Our goal came from Kolo Toure (I think) passing the ball straight to Martins outside the box, nice turn by Dyer and good finish.
The rest of the match was spent with Peter Ramage blasting the ball into touch every five minutes, he clearly can't play left back. Bramble was great in the air, unfortunately I don't think he made one kick all match as they shot straight past him. The guy simply can't kick under pressure. His passing was also awful.
Duff did nothing. Zoggy looked much better when he came on.
Solano did nothing much, Milner looked a little better. Parker was knackered by 55 minutes and should have been subbed.
Butt spent his time play acting, topped only by Steven Taylor's theatrical dive to try and get away with the clear foul on Henry that gave away the goal.
Martins ran around like a headless chicken, Dyer did little better.
Mis-placed passes all over the place, and Given's kicks have reached an all time low (though a nice but of keepy-uppy from an awful backpass).
Moore was ok-ish at best.
Sibierski came on at some point but I don't think he ever touched the ball.
It wasn't that we were defending well - we weren't. It was Arsenal who were absolutely useless around the box. I doubt they had a shot from inside the box during the first half. It was all misplaced passes.
On GIven:Most shots either hit over the bar or directly at him. Made maybe two good saves.

This is Arse's problem. All this pretty passing may look good, but I'm sure we've proved time and time again over the past two seasons that it's not going to work. That's what pisses me off. When the other team puts 11 behind the ball, we can't get our head around getting through it.
Newcastle robbed us, but it was our fault.

Gunners book Uefa Cup final spot
By Tony Leighton
Arsenal became the first British club to reach the Uefa Women's Cup final, beating Danish champions Brondby 3-0 for a 5-2 aggregate semi-final victory.
Goals by Rachel Yankey, Karen Carney and Julie Fleeting earned a meeting with Swedish champions Umea in the final which will be played in April.
Arsenal were without England striker Kelly Smith, scorer of both their first-leg goals, as she was suspended following her sending-off in Denmark.
But the Gunners made light of missing their star player.
Smith's England colleagues Yankey and Carney struck either side of half-time and Scotland striker Fleeting wrapped up an historic victory in stoppage time.
Manager Vic Akers said: "We're the first club from outside Germany or Scandinavia to reach the final so it's fantastic for English women's football as well as for Arsenal."
I know it's women, for all you Mike Newell-a-likes, but this is a really good step for women's football in Europe.

Sour frogs legs anyone? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/6163060.stm)
Scotland have been warned about the amount of time ball boys at Hampden take to get the ball back into play.
Uefa upheld a complaint by France coach Raymond Domenech and the referee after Scotland's 1-0 win in October.
Scottish Football Association chief executive David Taylor said it was the most bizarre thing he had encountered.
"Our ball boys failed to deliver the ball back after (Gary Caldwell's) goal. The happy ending is we got off with a warning," Taylor said.
Domenech was unhappy with the conduct of the ball boys during his side's defeat on 7 October after Scotland stunned the World Cup finalists with an unexpected victory in the Euro 2008 qualifier.
Taylor said he was surprised the conduct of the ball boys had been made an issue.
"Our ball boys failed to deliver the ball back after the goal," the SFA chief executive said.
"It was in the referee's report and in the match delegate's report. The referee said the ball was not returned to play quickly enough.
"We contested that because we didn't feel it was proper. The happy ending is we got off with a warning.
"It was strange to end up with a disciplinary charge against us for it."
Taylor defended Scotland's conduct during international games and said, if anything, the side "err on the side of being sporting".
He added: "It surprised us to be charged with such an offence.
"It's the most bizarre thing I've encountered with Scotland.
"We brief the ball boys during the game. They are Queen's Park's youth players.
"We'll need to make sure before the next game, which is against Georgia at home in March, even if we're 1-0 up with five minutes to go, even if the players are saying 'do you have to give the ball back so quickly?' that they do it."

Go away, smelly American/Canadians. No takeover, only investment.
I want to say God, but I'm going to say Stu.
*nods* :D
That was immense. You can do seven stepovers, you can do that fucking pointless cross move (which he's already done before) where he dinks the ball with one leg behind the other... but you can't score a fucking tap-in to an open goal from 4 yards?
answer to Liverpools poor away performances.
A. PLAY CROUCH
B. Stop wearing that flourescent puke coloured kit
C. PLAY CROUCH!
The kit can stay but yeah, Crouch needs to play. I thought yesterday he would've played Bellamy wide left or wide right and play Crouch and Kuyt up front because they've played so well together. As much as I like the guy, Gonzalez was absolutely pathetic yesterday - every single sodding cross he attempted hit the first man. Fucking useless cunting shitwankers.
