Ais for my authority which many players seem to question, thinking they're somehow going to make me change my mind.
B is for babies which a lot of managers cry like after a decision has not gone their way
C is for the continual criticism i recieve from the touchline, get back in your technical area!
D is for the dunderheads who seem to think we have a conspiracy against their particular team
E is for the eerie silence that echoes around the ground
after I've booked the home teams player and its obvious to everyone that he deserved it
F is the farce into which most games would descend if we werent there
G is for the gnarled face of someone whos on £90,000 a week
and reckoned he should have had a throw in
H is for handballwhich has to be intentional and very rarely is, if only people would study the rules more
I is for innocence, pleaded by many a doe-eyed defender after theyve just scythed down that tricky winger
J is for ju-jitsu, which i quite intend to display given a dark alley and some of the narky blerts ive encountered
K is for the kissing of the badge, how ridiculous that looks 6 months later when theyre at another club
L is for lip reading, at which you dont need to be an expert
to see how odious some people are
Mis for the mistakes we sometimes make. surely a bit of controversy is part of the games appeal
N is for the numbskull who during the boxing day game asks me what else i got for christmas besides my whistle
O is for offside which many forwards tell me they simply could not have been
P is for the penalty shootout, great drama and no pressure on me
Q is the quiet word i sometimes need to have with some of the more fiery participants, i usually choose the word 'pleat'
R is for running backwards, a difficult skill which the pundits never seem to appreciate
Sis the suggestion that i should show a card to an opponent
by a player whos been awarded a free kick, he himself is more in danger of getting one for that
T is for the 21 man brawl which is basically an embarrassing scene of pushing and shoving
U is for the umpire which i sometimes wish id been instead
you never hear a cricket crowd shouting whos the bastard in the hat
V is for vitriol vilification vendetta and volley of verbal abuse
X represents the sarcastic kiss planted on my forehead by the swarthy potugese center half, who i just dismissed
Y is for Yate, the kind of town referees come from
the Z could be for Zidane, Zico, Zola, Zubizaretta, Zoff
Even Zondervan. but is in fact for the zest with which we approach our work
without this zest for the game we wouldnt become refs. and without refs, well zero
..i've just noticed there's no W...

IFK Gothenburg 0-1 Derry City
Sean Hargan's 79th-minute header earned Derry City a shock away win over IFK Gothenburg in Thursday's Uefa Cup qualifying round first leg in Sweden.
Stefan Selakovic and Marcus Berg missed first-half chances for the home side, but Derry had a penalty claim turned down when Hargan was brought down.
Derry's Killian Brennan crashed a shot against the woodwork on 59 minutes.
Hargan finally broke the deadlock with 11 minutes to go before two great saves from David Forde sealed a famous win.
Derry had a lucky escape when Selakovic missed a great chance for Gothenburg in the eighth minute.
The home side carved out another good opportunity on 26 minutes, but Berg failed to hit the target from close range.
But Derry felt they should have had a penalty when Hargan was felled in the area by Adam Johansson on the stroke of half-time.
The visitors came out fired up after the break, with Brennan's long-range shot crashing back off the Gothenburg woodwork on 59 minutes.
Darren Kelly and Kevin McHugh also went close for the visitors before Hargan powered home Kevin Deery's cross to break the deadlock.
Gothenburg produced some intense late pressure, but Forde's two brilliant stops kept the home side at bay.
The second leg will take place at the Brandywell in a fortnight.

Yeah, if Milan start of negative points - it's gonna gift the title to Inter on a silver plate. I would imagine, re: Europe, they would bump everyone up a place...
Also, if Juve start on -20, they're gonna have to win basically every single game next season if they want to get instantly promoted.
On a similar note, Gattuso has pledged his future to Milan - even if they were to be relegated, he says he will NOT leave.

well it'd be out of Roma or Inter, i guess you can't rule out Udinese, Palermo or Chievo, in fact there have been quite a few suprise packages recently.
i think the -20 restriction is a great idea, it means it won't be so simple for them to go straight back up, and if they do get promoted, they'd have definitely earned it.

6. Lazio
7. Chievo
8. Palermo
9. Livorno

14. Sampdoria
15. Reggina
16. Cagliari
17. Siena
-------------
18. Messina
19. Lecce
20. Treviso
*
Right... but if they're dropping 3 Serie A teams to Serie B (Juve, Fior and Lazio)... would they NOT relegate the bottom three teams? Here's what they COULD do... I can't remember the placings for Italy in Europe but assuming they have the same as us (4 CL and 3 UC)
*
1. Inter Milan (C)
2. Roma
3. Chievo
4. Palermo
5. Livorno
6. Parma
7. Empoli
8. AC Milan
9. Ascoli

13. Cagliari
14. Siena
15. Messina
16. Lecce
17. Treviso
----------

So, in theory, they would be straight-up relegating them... otherwise they'd be overloading Serie B surely which would cause a complete fixture pileup. That makes sense to me.
Good on Gattuso, it's not the fans, or the managers fault that the club officals are tosspots, it's nice to see that he still wants to play for them and for the fans and the club. proper respect to him
Definately. It is a bit mean that the players are being punished, I honestly believe a lot of them are innocent and were completely oblivious to what was going on... but the suggestion is, especially with Juventus, that this couldn't have gone on for so long without at least one person finding out or twigging onto it... and of course, people talk. One suggestion has been that Buffon knew all along as he has a well-documented sports gambling problem although he did apparently stop doing it when the legislature (or whatever) changed in 2005.

i guess we'll find out later, but AC milans points are decucted for this season? do you think it'll be the same for next season also?
interesting if they don't relegate Lecce and co. and if Palermo and friends get champions league places, with the additonal money the recieve (i'd imagine quite a lot for the champs league teams) it could make the league a lot more competitive in the long run. it potentially could work out really well for Serie A.
however we have to take into account the crookedness of these teams officials... if they are just as corrupt the money will just be syphoned away, Theo Paphitis FA cup run style

I think the points deduction would be for the coming season, I just moved them down the table up there to emphasise moving them out of European positions which is a good punishment for a big team because that's £30M that they won't touch.
I think they should do it, "relegate" the cheating clubs and, as you say, help out the relegated teams by not relegating them and stick the others into Europe. That'll learn the cheating barstewards.

- Bolton set to sign Manchester United misfit and general waste of space, Quinton Fortune Cookie.
- Real Madrid claim to be "very close" to completing an £11M deal for Van Nistelrooy.
- After previously rejecting the move, former Spurs striker, Mido, could still be set for a move to Blackburn Rovers after they made an improved contract offer... ie... more money.

This would be the most likely outcome, yeah. There's no way they'd want to make anything that difficult for themselves to administer over by changing league numbers and fixture amounts, and I'm sure that's what's been done in the past.
Juve really are gonna have to go some. Yeah, they could in theory win every game, especially if they manage to keep all their players, but that's assuming Lazio and Fiorentina don't beat them, and that they don't have an off weekend and lose to some of the better Serie B teams.
Go Roma :D
Plus, how good is it going to be to see Chievo and Palermo in the Champions League.

Van Nistelrooy wants Man Utd exit
Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has asked to leave Manchester United.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said the 30-year-old wanted an Old Trafford exit after arriving in Durban for the start of the club's pre-season.
"There may be some interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich," Ferguson said on Friday.
"I am waiting for Manchester United chief executive David Gill to fill me in but Ruud van Nistelrooy has asked to leave the club."
Van Nistelrooy found first-team chances hard to come by in the second half of last season and rumours of a rift with Ferguson grew when the Dutch striker left the ground before United's last game.
The stumbling block to his move could be the fee.
Real are thought to be ready to offer £10m, but United are reported to want £15m.
However, the news that Brazilian striker Ronaldo will miss the start of the season as he recovers from knee surgery could force the Spanish club's hand.
Meanwhile, Bayern are ready to speak to United, with club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge saying: "The player wants to come to us we know that."
"Now we will approach the thing with all calm.
"We have to speak with the player and naturally with Manchester United but there are no grounds for haste."
Van Nistelrooy was a £19m signing from PSV Eindhoven in 2001 and has scored 150 goals in 218 appearances.

Players Vs Deadly Doug at Villa Park (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/5181952.stm)
Villa players unhappy with Ellis
Aston Villa's players have criticised chairman Doug Ellis for a lack of ambition at the club.
The Villa squad took the unprecedented step of issuing a joint statement raising concerns with Ellis, who put the club up for sale in October.
"The chairman should be behind the club and not working against what we're trying to achieve," said the statement.
"There've been a series of cutbacks and we feel we have to mention this because they are now starting to affect us."
Ellis' attempts to find a buyer for the midlands club have floundered and the players are unhappy at the extent the chairman has tightened the purse strings.
The statement added: "People talk about Aston Villa being a big club and winning the European Cup in 1982.
"We feel it should be a big club but if the chairman has got ambition, he needs to start showing it. It has to come from the top.
"So many other clubs are doing so much to show their ambition apart from us. As players we're all ambitious and we want to improve on last season.
"At the end of last season, the chairman refused to pay £300 for the pitches to be watered. The training ground development, which we were all looking forward to working in, has stopped.
"Now we have lost a masseur because the club refuse to pay for one and are clubbing together to pay for our own.
"We have also heard that the physio, who was on his way to see Martin Laursen, could not claim back for a cup of coffee at the airport.
"We've had no explanation for the cutbacks and we feel if the manager (David O'Leary) can't get one, then we have no chance.
"Maybe the chairman thought he would have left by now because of the takeover. Supporters are concerned with what happens on the pitch and rightly so.
"But we feel with all the cutbacks, it is difficult to attain the targets we all share.
"There are no positives coming out of the club. We need to see a plan where the club is going and all the players feel the same. Every penny is being watched."

Woah, the result is coming out:
AC Milan - Remain in Serie A, out of Europe and a 15 points deduction from the start of the 06/07 season.
Fiorentia - Relegated to Serie B, out of the Europe and a 12 points deduction from the start of the 06/07 season.
Lazio - Relegated to Serie B, out of Europe and a 7 points deduction from the start of the 06/07 season.
Juventus - Relegated to Serie B, stripped of the league title from the last two seasons, out of Europe and a 30 POINTS deduction from the start of the 06/07 season.
*
More details to follow, like what will happen to the three teams who were relegated from Serie A anyway - apparently, they may indeed stay relegated, thus shrinking Serie A to 17 teams as a league shrinking is something the Italian FA has been looking at for a while now.
Also, no details have come out as to whether the title will be awarded to the nearest eligible team (ie, last season's would be Inter) or whether it will just be left as a null/void season.
Juve. Are. Fucked. Kat and I worked it out, even if they won every single game they would still make around a maximum of 90-something points... and that's pretty much impossible to do because Serie B has some good teams and the Juve players will not stay to see that.
Bye bye, Juventus players.

Nah, Inter Milan always find a way to fuck things up. When they had the 2 best strikers alive upfront (Ronaldo and Vieri) in the late 90's they still managed to win nothing due to having no defence.
Roma will walk it next season unless all the 'almost' Italian clubs (Udinese, Parma etc) grab the chance and splash the cash on some players that can get them some much needed consistency. Next years Serie A will be interesting.

What The Hell Is Going On At Villa Park? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/5181952.stm)
Villa shocked by players' revolt
Aston Villa have cast doubt on a statement criticising chairman Doug Ellis for his running of the club.
The statement claimed to have been issued on behalf of the first-team squad, but Villa insist several players were unaware of its existence.
Head of communications Phil Mepham said: "Several senior members of the first-team squad had no knowledge of it. All were surprised at its content.
"So to suggest this is a collective statement is ridiculous."
Mepham's response was posted on the club's website under the headline 'Players and chairman unite'.
It added: "The chairman is furious, because he has had no indication from any member of the playing or coaching staff of any dissatisfaction at the training ground.
"This has come as a great surprise."
Ellis, 81, had heart surgery last year and has been in talks to sell the Premiership club.
But no deal has yet materialised, upsetting fans who feel the club has stagnated because of a lack of investment.
Bill Howell, a journalist with the Birmingham Mail newspaper, told radio station talkSPORT on Saturday that the statement actually came from one player only.
Issued on Friday, it read: "The chairman should be behind the club and not working against what we're trying to achieve.
"There've been a series of cutbacks and we feel we have to mention this because they are now starting to affect us.
"People talk about Aston Villa being a big club and winning the European Cup in 1982.

Van Nistelrooy 'wants Real move' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/5185542.stm)
Ruud van Nistelrooy has set his sights on a move to Real Madrid, according to the Manchester United striker's agent.
The 30-year-old has handed in a transfer request at Old Trafford, with Real, Bayern Munich and another unnamed club chasing his signature.
"We know Madrid want him and he wants to play there," Rodger Linse told Marca newspaper. "Madrid is a dream for any footballer, including Ruud."
Real are thought to have offered £8m but the asking price is at least £10m.
Van Nistelrooy asked to end his five-year career at Old Trafford after falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson last season.
"Ruud has asked to leave and we have to consider that. Obviously I think something may happen," said Ferguson.
"Real Madrid have shown interest and Bayern Munich have shown interest.
"I think another club have shown interest but David Gill is going to fill me in on that one."
Following a turbulent end to his club season with United, Van Nistelrooy headed to the World Cup with Holland, but ended the tournament as an unused substitute in his country's second-round defeat to Portugal.
However, Real's new manager Fabio Capello is optimistic Van Nistelrooy will be a success in Spain.
"Van Nistelrooy has done well at all the clubs he has played for," he told Spanish television station Antena 3.
"He has scored a lot of goals and he is a striker who can succeed at Madrid."
Van Nistelrooy was a £19m signing from PSV Eindhoven in 2001 and has scored 150 goals in 218 appearances

England Job For El Tel? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/5184666.stm)
Venables holds talks with England
Terry Venables has revealed he is in talks with England boss Steve McClaren about a return to the national set-up.
But Venables, who guided England to the semi-finals of Euro 96, insists he is not looking to replace McClaren.
"I am not about to join England's staff as a way of getting Steve McClaren's job," said Venables in his column in the News of the World.
"I'm excited by the prospect of working with England again, although I must stress, the deal has to be finalised."
The former Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Barcelona manager added: "My potential role with Steve is very exciting. He is offering me the freedom to take on as much as I want.
"I will obviously be involved around the matches and checking on players and he has already given me areas of the team he thinks need looking at."
Venables was appointed England manager in 1994 and led them to the last four of Euro 96 on home soil after beating Holland 4-1 in the group stages.
But after knocking Spain out on penalties to book their place in the semi-finals, they crashed out to Germany on spot-kicks and he left the post.
Since then he has had a second spell with Palace as well as jobs with Leeds, Middlesbrough and the Australian national side.

ENGLISH football is bracing itself for its own corruption scandal after Premiership investigators confirmed they have evidence of illicit transfers involving several top-flight clubs.
The stark news will send shock waves through the domestic game less than 48 hours after Italy's match-fixing scandal saw leading Serie A sides Juventus, Fiorentina, Lazio and AC Milan severely punished.
Here, a team of specialist bung-busters headed by former Met Police chief Lord Stevens has highlighted a series of highly-questionable Premier League transfers.
Now they want the green light to go further and grill the clubs, players and agents involved in those "dodgy deals" in a bid to bring them to justice.
And the investigators will enjoy unprecedented powers in their search for the truth.
Money
They will be able to demand home, office and mobile phone records, and personal bank accounts in an effort to find out who paid and who received the money which allegedly "went missing" in the deals.
That could then lead to a number of high-profile cases being brought against some of the game's biggest clubs and biggest names a shameful episode to rival the match-fixing sensation in Italy.
Nothing will happen for a couple of months because Lord Stevens' team will not officially present their interim report to the Premier League until September.
But inside sources say the report will provide enough evidence to convince the Premier League there are serious causes for concern in several high-profile moves.
It will also stress the bung-busters are keen to zero in on the biggest cases in a bid to bring charges against anyone responsible for flouting the Premiership's strict rules on transfers by making illegal payments.
Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore sanctioned the on-going inquiry into all transfers made since January 2004.
Scudamore looks sure to agree, despite possible resistance and reluctance from club chairmen who may be concerned about the consequences for their teams.
Bungs
An insider said: "What is the point of setting up an inquiry into allegations of illegal payments and illicit transfers if you don't follow the evidence and go all the way with it?
"Lord Stevens' team are sure to carry on this investigation, and a lot of people should be very uneasy about that."
A Premiership spokesman said: "We will receive Lord Stevens' initial report in September and examine it carefully.
"It was always going to be the case the inquiry would identify transfers they would like to look at in more detail."
Scudamore announced the inquiry into alleged transfer irregularities in March, shortly after News of the World published comments by then England boss Sven Goran Eriksson about corruption in the Premier League.
Eriksson claimed the Premiership had a "bungs" culture and he knew of three clubs where illegal payments were paid, including to a boss.

United better get done for it, there have been so many occassions where they've been called on improper transfer conduct and nothing ever happens about it. How many times have big name players come out and said that United tried to "tap them up"? Lots. How many of their preferred agents are scumbags? All of them. Hell, you need only look at the cunt who engineered Rooney's transfer from Everton - he made a cool million of that allegedly.

It must be so easy to be an agent these days. You make so much stupid money from everyone involved. Get in, represent a player, get the club to pay you if they're so desperate for them, take a cut of the transfer fee for setting it all up, and you're laughing.
Now they're going to make the players alone pay the agents. I heard Sol Campbell isn't using an agent, he's just using a lawyer to make sure the contracts are good. He's negotiating himself.

As Dan the Arab already said - Leeds made £3M from Kewell and his agent made £2M. Definately not a very sporting deal but sadly it seems to happen all the time... although frankly I'm bemused as to why such a clause would be written into a players contract and then the selling club be angry when it's made public knowledge...

Your best bet is probably the clubs box office, but they usually work on a sliding scale depending on importance. For example, with my beloved Liverpool:
1st - Members of the priority ticket scheme (whoever the hell they are)
2nd - Fan card holders (which I have)
3rd - General sale (phones/internet)
4th - Window sales (ie, box office over at Anfield)
Check the clubs websites and they should give information about when tickets go on sale.

News on the Duffman's transfer (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/t/tottenham_hotspur/5186380.stm)
Tottenham closing in on Duff deal
Tottenham are close to completing the signing of Chelsea's Damien Duff, according to reports.
The 27-year-old winger is thought to have completed a medical on Sunday and is expected to make his move across the capital in the next few days.
The Republic of Ireland star, who moved to Chelsea from Blackburn for £17m in 2003, has a year left on his contract.
Duff has won two Premiership titles at Chelsea but has struggled to hold down a regular slot in the starting line-up.
He would become Spurs' third major signing of the summer so far after the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov, Didier Zokora, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
Since Jose Mourinho replaced Claudio Ranieri as boss in 2004, Duff has been hampered by knee and shoulder injuries, and the summer arrival of Michael Ballack has put his place in the side under further threat.
The signing of Ballack and striker Andriy Shevchenko could mean that Mourinho will revert to a 4-4-2 to accomodate his new signings, leaving fewer opportunites for Chelsea's wingers.
Duff began his career at Blackburn Rovers in 1996 and made over 200 appearances for the Lancashire club.
Since moving to London, Duff has featured 95 times for the Premiership champions.

Thompson embroiled in Celtic row (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/celtic/5186740.stm)
Alan Thompson's Celtic career is in doubt after the player was sent home from the club's US tour.
Celtic insist that the midfielder has a thigh strain but the 32-year-old's agent claims that the player is "surplus to requirements".
But Tony McGill told The Herald: "Alan Thompson wasn't injured when he left the team's hotel in America.
"So, unless he injured himself carrying his luggage on to the plane, that situation is still the same."
Thompson, who has a year of his Celtic contract to run, made just 11 starts last season.
And McGill believes that the club are trying to remove one of of their highest paid players from the wage bill.
"I think Celtic have acted unprofessionally," the agent continued.
"I thought the manager wanted more experienced players in his squad and certainly Alan falls into that category.
"The manager has obviously changed his mind, or someone has changed his mind for him.
"I can only presume that this is more of a financial decision rather than anything to do with his performances, because Alan has always given his best for Celtic.
Thompson has featured in all four of Celtic's warm-up matches so far but had voiced concern about the club's hectic pre-season schedule.
"I don't see how it could be related to the comments Alan made about the pre-season plans because the manager has come out and said practically the same," added McGill.
"I just feel that Alan, with all his service to the club, should have been treated with more respect.
"Why could this not wait until they were back from America? Alan has reacted in a professional manner and we will take it from here."
Thompson has been at Celtic Park for almost six years after moving north from Aston Villa for a £2.75m fee.

Kuyt To Decide On Future (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/5011150.stm)
Kuyt ready to decide his future
Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt is poised to finally decide his future after being linked with a move to Liverpool.
Kuyt, 25, has asked for time off to make a final decision on whether to quit the club, and recently revealed Liverpool had made an approach.
Holland's £10m-rated World Cup star has also been a target for Newcastle.
He told Dutch sports paper AD Sportwereld: "I have an arrangement with coach Erwin Koeman that I can take some days to think about my future."
Liverpool's move for Kuyt appears to depend on whether they can clinch a deal for Sevilla's Brazilian right-sided player Daniel Alves.
Sevilla are demanding £12m, which would virtually exhaust manager Rafael Benitez's transfer budget.
If he pulls out of a move and switches attention to Birmingham City's Jermaine Pennant, he could then have enough cash to fund a move for Kuyt.
Kuyt said recently: "The Feyenoord president has informed me of a new approach from last year's European champions.
"I am happy at Feyenoord but would like to play in the Premier League."
He added: "Last year that was close to happening so for now I prefer to concentrate only on the World Cup because my hopes could be soured again."
The Dutchman, who is under contract until 2009, has scored 71 goals in 101 games for Feyenoord but has consistently been priced out of a move by his club.
He said: "It is out of my hands. I have several opportunities but it is now down to Feyenoord."
The forward began his career at FC Utrecht in 1998 before moving to Feyenoord in 2003.

Following a Football Association disciplinary hearing on Wednesday, July 12, a charge against West Ham United, relating to crowd behaviour during our match at Millwall on November 21, 2004, was found not proven.
The Club was charged with failing to ensure that its spectators and/or persons purporting to be its supporters or followers conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and refrained from threatening and/or violent and/or provocative behaviour.
However, the FA commission ruled that the Club were not guilty of such a charge, and the case is now closed.
Legal and Commercial Director Scott Duxbury says: "We are very satisfied with the outcome of the hearing, having maintained our innocence against the charge all along, and are pleased that the matter is now closed."
apprantly ripping up 178 seats - throwing dozens of them on the pitch - injuring a disabled person and 2 police horses isn't enough to warrant a guilty charge
still we should be grateful, last time this happened at the Den WE got charged for it

Villa team 'demand Ellis meeting' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/5188862.stm)
Aston Villa manager David O'Leary says his players want to meet chairman Doug Ellis, as the row over alleged critical comments deepens.
"They wish to meet the chairman at his earliest convenience to discuss their concerns over issues raised at the weekend," O'Leary told Sky Sports News.
"It would be unwise for me to comment publicly until the outcome."
Villa are to investigate last week's publication of a statement allegedly on behalf of the squad, criticising Ellis.
Players will be spoken to in the inquiry, conducted by operations director Steve Stride and non-executive directors David Owen and Steven Kind.
The club says it will make no comment on the affair until the inquiry is complete.
A local newspaper published the alleged comments last week. The club said there was no proof such a statement existed.
Midfielder Lee Hendrie insisted the players were as confused as everyone else as to precisely what had gone on.
"We're in the dark," Hendrie told BBC News 24.
"A lot of the players don't know what's happening, and we're trying to find out. Hopefully it will be resolved.
"We've all had a chat in general about things, and we feel it's been blown out of proportion."
Ellis is out of the country so the players must wait until the 82-year-old returns to thrash out the affair with him face-to-face.

So, do our subs score points or what?
depends on the circumstance. sometimes the game automatically brings a sub on if your player suffers a last minute injury etc..
EDIT - taken from the help page on the site.....
Do substitutes score points?
Only starting or automatically substituted players will earn points for your team. These automatic substitutions provide cover for unforeseen events like last minute injuries, players being dropped and match postponements. Having a strong substitutes bench also allows you to select a starting 11 each Gameweek based on form and fixtures without suffering transfer points penalties.
Help - Automatic substitutions
If your goalkeeper plays no part in the Gameweek, then the computer will substitute him for your replacement goalkeeper, if he played in the Gameweek.
If any of your outfield players play no part in the Gameweek, then the computer will try to substitute the inactive player for one of your replacements. This is done by replacing him with your highest priority substitute who actually played in the Gameweek and doesn't break the formation rules.
Automatic substitutions are applied at the end of the Gameweek, when all matches have been played.
You can change your substitution priorities at the bottom of the My Team page. Any changes you make to your substitution priorities will become active at the next deadline.

Who is the Villain of the piece?
By Phil McNulty
Chief football writer
David O'Leary almost achieved Aston Villa's version of mission impossible - hitting a level of unpopularity that briefly threatened to rival the club's octogenarian ogre Doug Ellis.
"We're not fickle - we just don't like you" was one of last season's more memorable terrace banners as boss O'Leary's relationship with Villa fans deteriorated after a dismal campaign.
Villa chairman Ellis has been the villain of this long-running saga, but O'Leary was firmly in the firing line from fans as one of the game's great old clubs lurched from crisis to crisis.
Now, on the eve of a new season and Villa among the favourites for relegation, battle lines are drawn again and long-suffering supporters fear the worst.
Ellis has instigated an internal inquiry into a recent statement, allegedly supported by Villa's first-team squad, criticising the veteran chairman's regime.
O'Leary insists he had no prior knowledge of the statement, but telephone calls and security procedures are understood to be under scrutiny as part of a Villa investigation into how the criticism became public.
The unspoken message is that if the finger of suspicion points in any way towards O'Leary instigating the "revolt", he will be sacked.
Turmoil is once again Villa's watchword.
It is the latest blow for a huge and fiercely-loyal Villa fan base who have watched their club move away from being in European contention towards the relegation zone.
Jonathan Fear, spokesman for the Villa Fans Combined group, told BBC Sport: "The club is on its knees. Doug Ellis has turned the club into a joke and the only people not laughing are the fans and shareholders.
"It is crushing to see us like this. We don't feel we have a god-given right to silverware, but we would expect to be contenders. We used to be 9/2 for the title, now we are 9/2 for relegation. This is the legacy Ellis is in danger of leaving."
Fear believes O'Leary has to accept his share of responsibility, but is convinced the only way Villa can move forward is for 82-year-old Ellis to finally relinquish his hold on the club.
He said: "As I said, we are on our knees. It has been heading that way for a few years, which is what fans' groups like ours have been saying.
"There is collective responsibility, and there seem to be divisions all over Villa Park at the moment, and at a time when we need it desperately there is no leadership or direction. This should come from the very top.
"The finger of blame has to be pointed at Ellis because he is the one who has appointed managers. You also have to look at the players and manager for what happened last season, but they are doing jobs with their hands tied behind their backs."
Fear admits it is hard to envisage O'Leary coming through the latest wrangle, even if he is cleared of any involvement in the dressing room criticism of Ellis.
He said: "It is very difficult to see how he can survive. I'm surprised he wants to stay because his reputation is on the line and it was damaged by what happened last season.
"If Ellis is there at the start of the season, I'm not convinced O'Leary will be, but how can we attract players to Villa Park, or even a top manager, with the current state of affairs?"
O'Leary would lose an expensive pay-off if he quit, while Ellis is hardly likely to want to sign another massive cheque to a sacked manager - leaving Villa with the potential for a damaging stand-off.
Fear added: "The club needs a clean sweep, but what will not wash is simply another new manager and the promise of another golden era.
"There is a cycle at Villa Park. We get a new manager and the promise of better times ahead. The first season is usually relatively good, but then by the third season everybody wants the manager out - and the only common denominator in all of this is the chairman.
"I'm no real fan of O'Leary's and he did himself no favours with the way he talked down about the fans and the club last season, but before we address anything on the manager, we have to address the fact the club has gone stale.
"And I'm afraid this latest episode is just what we didn't need just before the start of the new season.
"Fans are now voting with their feet. Season tickets plummeted last season and attendances dropped, and they have been decimated again this summer."
A £64m takeover bid from a consortium fronted by Irish property developers, the Comer Brothers, appears to have sunk.
Fear said: "Doug Ellis is hiding behind a takeover bid that doesn't exist. We hear talk of consortiums and there is no better time for people to come forward, but at the moment there is nothing.
"It's a real crisis for us, and while O'Leary must take some blame, the first step must be for Ellis to stop treating the club as his baby and leave."
