Begs the question - did McLaren have any say on beckham before Sven left then? Or did he just shut up..

McClaren too scared to do what he feels. he's kept Beckham out simply because of all the paper noise about Sven being too chicken to drop him.

If McClaren actually had balls he'd have recalled him.

THE REAL SHANKS

To thousands of football fans the Liverpool legend was the greatest manager in the world.. but to little Karen Gill he was simply 'Grandy'
By Brian Mciver

TO football fans, he was the man who changed the shape of the game forever and one of the greatest Scottish managers of all time.

To the world, he was the man who famously said football was more important than life and death.

But to softly spoken teacher Karen Gill, Bill Shankly was the man who would pick her up with the warmest arms in the world, buy her ice cream and tell her stories of life in Scotland when he was a boy.

The football icon, who turned Liverpool from a struggling Second Division outfit into one of the most successful teams in Europe, died 25 years ago this weekend, after a heart attack in his adopted home city. The Ayrshire-born hero is still idolised by Liverpool fans and recognised as one of the best football managers in the world.

He was also part of the Scottish coaching holy trinity with his friends Jock Stein and Matt Busby.

But to Karen, the soccer legend was her grandad, or "Grandy".

The 41-year-old teacher, who lives in Athens, has just published a book, The Real Bill Shankly, about her experiences of growing up with him.

They vary from missing him while he was away at European games to the joy of a ride home from school in his car and the sadness of his funeral in 1981.

But despite all the hours and days Bill missed with his family because of football, Karen said not one of them would have wanted anything different.

"When I was a little girl walking down the street with him, there were always people stopping and talking to him," said Karen. "I remember it being irritating and frustrating that they were taking his attention away from me.

"That was the first time, when I was really young, that I worked out he was famous.

"But the strangest thing for me was one time I changed school when I was 11, and my new headmaster thought he was doing me a favour by saying to the class that I was Bill Shankly's granddaughter.

"But he was digging my grave because there were lots of Everton fans who wouldn't talk to me and probably wanted to beat me up, and the Liverpool supporters were too much in awe of him to talk to me either."

Bill Shankly was born in 1913 in the mining community of Glenbuck, Ayrshire, into a typical family.

After rising through the junior football ranks, he became a professional in 1932 with Carlisle United, and went on to star for Preston North End, winning seven Scottish international caps.

In 1946, aged 33, he moved into management, running Grimsby, Workington and Huddersfield before taking over at Anfield in 1959.

He took Liverpool from the Second Division up to the top tier of English football after two years.

He went on to win three league titles, two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup. But although football was his passion, it was something he never shared at home.

"I only went to my first Liverpool match a year ago when they played Manchester United," revealed Karen.

"Because it was never something we were involved in, we never went to a game when he was in charge because we were all girls and it was just assumed we weren't interested. We never really were, to be honest.

"When he was around, we just wanted to be with him. He was our Grandy and we loved spending time with him and our grandmother, Nessie.

"Grandy was just a great man. He was so important to us and was a big part of our lives. My parents divorced when I was two, so he really looked after us and was a great help. Every week we would go round to his house or a posh hotel for dinner on a Sunday, and that was always lovely.

"His big thing was also ice cream. He loved Italian ice cream and would take us to the Lord Nelson Hotel. I can't remember what flavour he would like as we were just little, but I'm sure it was something simple like vanilla.

"That was him. Things were always simple and straightforward."

As well as ice cream trips and rides home from school, Grandy would also let Karen sit on his knee when he went for his regular haircut at an Evertonmad barber called Harold. But the pair were good friends and Karen would sit there while they argued about football.

The hairdresser once joked during a wet shave that he would cut Bill's throat if he didn't know he would bleed red.

With half of Liverpool considering Shankly part of their family, Karen grew up in the city with her sisters Pauline and Emma, the daughter of Bill's daughter Barbara and footballer Vic Gill. The influence of football on their lives was shown by the timing of her parents' wedding.

It was held at 10.00am because it was also the day of Liverpool's match with city rivals Everton, which Bill had no intention of missing.

"Football did always come first for him," said Karen. "When I was really little, I would have wanted to see him more, but nowadays I wouldn't change athing about his life or him, because we are so proud of him.

"The statue outside Anfield says 'He made the people happy' and that sums him up for me. He was exactly as most people would imagine him - generous, fair-minded, enthusiastic and very passionate and compassionate.

"He wasn't an affectionate man though, and was raised in a real man's world where you didn't show emotions.

"But some people don't need to hug you or say the words to let you know they love you.

"But he was very caring. He would do anything for us, and for other people. He was always helping out kids at the children's hospital and sorting people out with tickets. He was such a generous man and everybody loved him."

Karen admits the one thing that irks her is Bill's over-used quote made in a TV interview. Asked if football was a life and death matter, he said it was more important than that.

Karen said: "I don't like that quote because it is often taken out of context.

"In the context of the game, it was absolutely true for him because when he was working it came first and it was his real passion.

"But in terms of the rest of life, it wouldn't have been true and he wouldn't have wanted to be remembered like that.

"I am glad he didn't live to see Hillsborough (when 95 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at an FA Cup semi-final) because that would have just destroyed him.

"He retired with such happy memories of football and Liverpool, and I think that would have ruined the game for him."

Bill left the job he loved in 1974 and in 1981, at the age of 67, he suffered a heart attack at home. He was taken to hospital where his condition was stable and not serious for three days. But on September 29, he suffered a second massive cardiac arrest and died.

"There were two moments after he retired that I realised just how great a man he was," said Karen.

"The first was when I was eight when we all went to London to do This Is Your Life and I was amazed at all the people.

"The second was his funeral.

"It was so sad and we were all in so much pain, but the number of people who came out was just incredible. He is really idolised, and we are all so proud of our Grandy."

I thought we played pretty well first half, got some shit decision go against us... but Bex is right, that's us out of the title running. Having lost 3 games already there's no way we can stay unbeaten between now and the end of the season and that's what we'd need to do.

However, that said, the first goal was a fucking joke - no way in hell was Reina outside the box when he released the ball. Linesman got that 100% wrong and it was downhill from there... felt we could have had a penalty when Campo shoved Kuyt over in the box but we paid the price for having 59% possession, lots of chances but not converting any of them.

I fucking hate Bolton, they're playing SO ahead of themselves for a bunch of mediocre long-ball merchants.

Arsenal played very well, Van Persie looked su-fucking-blime and that second goal was treeeeemendose!!

Very pleased to see Everton slip up, cracking goal by Micah Richards... and Villa deserved a point against Chelsea, deffo.

but Bex is right, that's us out of the title running.

After seeing how the league table has lined up, I've changed my mind... but we can barely afford any more slip ups. The points difference between 1st and 10th is 6 points... two games... not too much but it's apparently enough for papers to be constantly on Benitez's back for no real reason. We're not playing badly per se we could just do with a spot of luck going our way and I'm confident that we'll get it. :)

*

Zokora's dive was fucking horrendous and for Jol to suggest he "expected the tackle from Mendes and lost his balance" is laughable. Harry "BUNGYBUNGYBUNGY" Redknapp hit the nail on the head when he said that he'd seen a replay within 10 seconds so why couldn't the 4th official? It's yet another high profile fuck-up by the officials that could easily have been avoided with video replays.

That said, I think Spurs deserved a bit of luck... and Murphy's goal was surely it, fucking hell... even Spud couldn't have missed that sitter. :D

Come on, we hit the post so many times. And Ole was there to tap in one. Admittedly, he didn't know much about the second one, but that was a nice shot from Vidic. Fact is that if Ole wasn't doing his job in being in the right place and having the instincts, then we wouldn't have got the first goal, and possibly not the second. <3 teh Ole.

And Ronaldo deserves the praise he's getting. Commentators on the radio said something during the game - probably the two best players of the season so far are the two most hated - Dogba and Ronaldo. There's definitely something in that.

Cough cough yourself lad, see my above post. Me and my Dad are Garcia's biggest critics - he's completely fucking useless. He never tracks back and was partially at fault for both goals against Galatasary, he never ever tracks back, he dives at every given opportunity, his passing is appalling, he generally has a dire first touch, he's so easy to get off the ball because he's so lightweight and he only plays because he must be bumming Benitez. How he keeps hard working other players with talent out the team is beyond me... problem is, he's scored 7 Champions League goals in 2 seasons and most of them have been fucking stonkers.

what rubbish, it's just a bit of fun, he didn't do it to incite anyone, any normal fans would laugh it off. it'll be a disgraced if he gets charged

That may be the case but the fact is you can't do it, if it winds fans up - it's gonna be judged to be unsporting and potentially dangerous.

Also, it's nice to see everyone on Rooney's back. :) Form-wise, there is NO reason to start him for England it should be Crouch and Johnson (as much as I hate to admit it). I still don't think Johnson is world class but he's the top scoring English forward so he HAS to be given the chance and that means a starting place in the next few games.

Redknapp said Foy told him: "I'm sorry, Harry, I've made a big mistake."

But the Pompey boss added: "He didn't make a mistake on purpose. Referees need help out there."

Redknapp used the incident to revive football's perennial debate about the use of video technology during matches.

"I saw from the big screen that it was no way a penalty about 10 seconds before it was taken. So why can't the fourth official, who is wired up to the referee, have a monitor by the side of the pitch and tell the ref what really happened?

Think you would find it very hard. Yesterday was a prime example, on Sky's Highlights they where doing a segment titled 'Ronaldo Skill' and in one clip he took the piss out of 4/5 Newcastle Players, they challenged him about 3 times and if that was the young misguided Ronnie he would have gone down with a triple somersault. But he didn't, he rode the challenges and released Evra on the wing with a sublime pass, he is maturing :D Where as Luis Garcia uses very cheap KY Jelly :p

If any other United fan said that, there might be a slight chance of me believing it... but it ain't gonna happen, you're as biased towards FPR as you are Beckham.

Stick FPR against any GOOD left-back and he'll do a number of step-overs and then either get tackled, fall over, dive and whip a useless ball in.

At least I can admit Garcia's a diving gobshite.

Rooney probably will, I hope he doesn't because everyone will conveniently forget how inept he's been this season, how he is NOT a potent threat for England and continue rimming him as per usual. The strain of a move to United and all the extra pressure that comes with it is showing now. He needs some time off or he's gonna be ruined.

From what I've seen of FPR this season, he's been his usual boring self - he's all flair but there is rarely an end product. He has two goals this season - Fulham and Reading - enh, hardly that impressive.

He has been most dreadful and annoying, he first touch has become more like Dogba's rather than his usual self and he just seems a yard off the pace. Maybe Dogba's done some sort of hoodoo on Rooney and swapped skill, seems like it.

Ronaldo has been the driving force of United so far, even when Giggs was playing Ronaldo always has looked a threat, got crosses into the box which no one has been able to get onto. His corners have improved vastly, everyone of them is planted onto the edge of the six yard area but with United's complete and utter inemptness heading the ball it gets us nowhere. He is probably the best header of the ball in the team to be honest. He tracked back a lot yesterday, got a few crucial tackels and blocks in.

haha, we have the answer! :D

I've been see-sawing about Rons. He's definitely been our biggest threat (alongside Giggs when he was fit), but there have still been times when I've wanted to kick him right up the arse.

(btw, did that actually happen to Vidic yesterday? I heard the commentators laughing about him getting a boot straight up the arse).

I defo think we'd be be way lower down the league if Rons hadn't been playing. He's very important to us and is constantly improving. There are still lapses and selfishness we need to get rid of though.

I LOVED the Horse (and he's doing fantastically now - I'm well happy for him), but so far this season Rons has proved his worth, and we don't seem to have been missing Ruud.... so guess I'd have to say... the only thing about that, is that you really need FPR on form, you could live on Ruud being slightly out of form, he'd still manage to somehow score a few goals. when FPR is playing a stinker, it's a proper stinker. as Stu said, i think it depends on the quality of the defence

Well, I wondered about that but Boro didn't take action against the three clubs who had talks over that youngster (Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle) because they said that there was little evidence to support the notion that THE CLUB knew anything about it and it was most likely the actions of individuals. That sounds a bit guff, I don't believe anything goes on in a Premiership club without the Chairman's knowledge.

Double blow for Villa (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/5400854.stm)

Aston Villa striker Luke Moore could miss the remainder of the season after suffering a recurrence of a shoulder injury in Saturday's draw at Chelsea.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill said the 20-year-old winger's injury could be "season threatening".

"If Luke needs an operation, it will be a major blow to us because it will take months and months," said O'Neill.

"It's a real blow to us and to him but he needs the shoulder tightening up and he needs it strengthened."

Moore has been dogged by the injury for the past three years.

The player recently admitted: "The shoulder is painful when it comes out but once it's back in it's not too painful. I've been trying to put the operation off as long as I can.

"It first became a problem when I was 17 so it is a long-term thing."

O'Neill is understood to be ready to step up his efforts to bring in former Celtic striker Chris Sutton on a short-term contract to bolster his forward line.

Villa's boss has constantly deflected questions about Sutton but it is known he is keen to be reunited with the player who was under his charge at Parkhead.

The 33-year-old was dogged by injury setbacks during a spell at Birmingham last season but has worked on his fitness throughout the summer months.

O'Neill currently has only Milan Baros to fall back on alongside current first team strikers Juan Pablo Angel and Gabriel Agbonlahor and the Czech international is still short of full match sharpness after a foot injury.

Millwall involved in bungs scandal thingy.

The FA can today announce a number of disciplinary matters regarding agents:

The FA have charged licensed agent Charles Collymore with a breach of the FA Football Agents Regulations. It is alleged that Collymore touted the Luton Town player Enoch Showunmi to Millwall without the knowledge or consent of Luton and in breach of League rules. It is alleged that Collymore has breached The FA's Football Agents Regulations and/or the FIFA Players' Agents Regulations.

Collymore has also been charged with breaching the agents regulations in that it is alleged that he represented Showunmi without a written representation contract, or that he allegedly did not lodge the representation contract with The FA.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Millwall FC (just added to statement by the FA to avoid confusion)

He has until 17 October to respond.

Information provided to The FA by Luton Town manager Mike Newell forms part of the evidence used to bring the charges. The FA is continuing to conduct a separate investigation into a further claim made by Newell.

So he was watching the Top 50 Foreign players on Sky One too then.

Go on then, Sawah, who would you rather have stayed - Van Nistelhorse or FPR?
Oh I meant to say earlier, I think it was the guilt of my answer to this question that made Ruud and Ronaldo appear in my dream last night. Well strange and highly uninteresting to anyone else of course, but I'll say it anyway.

Bunch of players in a crowded room wearing red shirts. Elijah "Frodo" Wood in the background looking out the window. I walk past Michael Owen who's doing up his laces and go up to Ruud and tell him he's great. We hug - for AGES, and Ronaldo gets a digicam out to take a couple of pics of us. The end.
Ruud makes a pretty good hugger, just so yous know. :p

Nothing good has come from their transfers. Nothing for the club, the players themselves, the fans, and the game itself. As much as I'd like to see them run West Ham into the ground, I think they should just fuck off, and we can forget it ever happened.

All the best Big Marv (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/raith_rovers/5406252.stm)

Chancellor Gordon Brown used his skills of political persuasion to help convince Marvin Andrews to re-sign for Raith Rovers.
The chancellor - a Raith fan - and Raith manager Craig Levein held talks with the deeply-religious defender.

Andrews, 30, said: "I'm delighted to be back at Starks Park but I'm not here because of what Gordon Brown said - I'm here because of what God said."

The player left Raith for Livingston in 2000 and spent two years at Rangers.

The chancellor attended a meeting with Paster Joe Nwokoye, Andrews and Levein over the weekend before the player agreed to sign for the club.

As part of the deal, the Marvin Andrews Youth Development Trust is being set up in Kirkcaldy.

The chancellor is not financially involved in the deal but encouraged local businesses to get involved in the trust and financing Marvin's wages, which will be co-funded by the club.

The Trinidad & Tobago defender was released a year early from his Rangers contract in August.

Rovers manager Craig Levein said: "He will give everyone a huge confidence boost especially the young guys."

Andrews, who missed all three of his country's matches at the World Cup after problems with a knee injury, had reportedly rejected an approach from Premiership club Reading.

A deeply religious man, Andrews will remain close his chosen place of worship, the Zion Praise Centre, which is near Kirkcaldy.

"Marvin has over 100 caps for his country and has amassed a great deal of experience which makes him a significant presence on the park," added Levein.

"As he has shown many times before, Marvin is a great personality and a proven winner.

"And the fact he has turned down offers from England and Scotland sends a great message to the fans. This is a club on the up."

Pah, I'd eat shit that had gone past its sell by date for her.
Yeah, she's a bird who likes her football, but she supports the mortal enemy.

Very slow day, although nice to see the Uefa Cup final awarded to City of Manchester, and Wembley being snubbed for it's uselessness YET AGAIN!

No. There's talk it won't be ready before the end of the season - there's a lot of legal wrangling going on.

Pardew denies threatening to quit

Pardew led West Ham into the Premiership
West Ham manager Alan Pardew has denied threatening to quit the club in protest at a rumoured takeover.
Speculation continues to link Iranian businessman Kia Joorabchian with a £70m buy-out, but Pardew denied he had to be talked out of quitting over the saga.

"I absolutely did not threaten to resign in any shape or form," he said on Wednesday in a statement.

"I have a good working relationship with the board and we are working hard to turn the poor results around."

West Ham, who were early season pace-setters, have drawn once and then lost five in a row since Argentine superstars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano were brought to the club in August.

The players came from Brazilian club Corinthians, who are in part owned by investment company MSI, who have previously been linked with a takeover of West Ham.

Joorabchian is a former employee of MSI and it has been claimed he played a part in getting the two players to the club.

Pardew's statement on Wednesday came through the club's public relations consultants Phil Hall Associates, who also represent Joorabchian.

I heard that yesterday on Sky Sports News, and I laughed. Everyone loves David Dein don't they. They're gonna be so pleased he's in charge ;)

He will get things done though. He has a good relationship with the managers in Europe.
