Yeah, I've got high hopes for Van Persie too

Now I'm moving back to London for a month I'm going to try and get some tickets for the CL game against Porto, as it's on my birthday :D

Good luck with that, I've heard its near impossible to get tickets for the new stadium, unless you have contacts of course.

Here's a nice talking point. Which clubs fans do you think will be most unhappy after the transfer window closing?

I'd say Newcastle. Lost out on Woodgate, Gravensen, Yakubu among a host of others. Still desperate for a striker since Owen will be out.

Villa would be up there too. No Saviola, no Milner.

Exactly. The way I see it, if we can keep up the pace until January, then get a decent striker in, we're in with a serious shout.
Oh yeah, and we also missed out on Teves, Trezeguet and Senna.

Bud

I'd say Saviola was alot more realistic than Defoe. I'm pretty sure Man U will be sniffing around for him in Jan, as he's just the sort of player they need. I can only see Defoe going to a bigger club than Spurs.

O'Neill upset over Milner episode

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has criticised Newcastle for pulling out of a deal for James Milner.
Milner, 20, was set to complete a move from Newcastle after the clubs agreed a deal, only for the Magpies to change their mind and recall the winger.

"We are disappointed because of the lateness of the decision," O'Neill told the club's website.

"Newcastle are entitled to do what they did, but we are disappointed because it came so late in the day."

Milner spent last season on loan at Villa Park and was keen to return on a permanent basis.

He was given permission to travel to Villa after Newcastle accepted a £4m offer but after Milner agreed personal terms the Magpies decided to call off the deal.

O'Neill added: "It's over now and I'm upset for Villa that we don't have James at the football club.

"He enjoyed himself here last season and did well and we wanted him to continue that.

"We tried right up until midnight to keep the deal alive. Some transfers are dependent on other transfers and we think that might have been the case with this one and that's why it never materialised."

well considering we're meant to be chasing promotion, we should be beating mid-table/relegation fodder like yeovil at home...not play poorly and have one shot on target in 90minutes (i only know this because of stats ive read after the game, i can't remember it) and only get a point because of a dubious penalty! infact the penalty was probaly the shot on target.

Scotland Win (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/5292876.stm)

Scotland 6-0 Faroe Islands

Kris Boyd scored twice as Scotland made the perfect start to Euro 2008 qualifying against the Faroe Islands.

Darren Fletcher knocked in from close range and James McFadden added a second goal in the ninth minute with a fine strike from 18 yards.

Boyd scored the first of two penalties, with Kenny Miller claiming the second.

Boyd raced through to claim his second before half-time and substitute Garry O'Connor saw his late shot slip beyond goalkeeper Jakup Mikkelsen.

Scotland have been drawn alongside the Faroe Islands in four consecutive European Championship qualifying campaigns.

And the tiny North Atlantic nation have embarrassed the Scots twice before, earning draws in Toftir in 1999 and 2002.

However, there was to be no upset this time, with Walter Smith's men running riot after scoring twice inside the first ten minutes.

Miller has not yet found the net since his summer move to Celtic but the striker played a key role in both goals.

He left his marker for dead and threaded the ball across goal from the left for Fletcher to bundle it over the line.

Miller then made a menacing run into the penalty area and the ball broke to McFadden, who swept a curling, low shot into the corner of the net.

Fortune continued to smile on the Scots when a penalty was given for a trip on Boyd after 23 minutes.

The award was soft and the Rangers striker's spot-kick was not well executed but slid under Mikkelsen.

Another penalty followed soon after for a rash challenge on Fletcher and Miller's effort was worse than Boyd's but slipped through the fingers of the luckless Mikkelsen.

Boyd doubled his tally on 38 minutes, running on to a fine Fletcher pass and slotting into an empty net after Mikkelsen had blocked his initial shot.

At five-nil down the part-time opponents must have been desperate for the half-time break and a slice of puffin pie.

A couple of players decided to have an early lie-down and their theatrics brought about yellow cards for Fletcher and Miller.

Both men were later withdrawn, with Gary Teale and O'Connor getting the chance to impress in the second-half.

Scotland were content to knock the ball around after the interval as the previously whirlwind-tempo slowed to walking pace.

Despite the drop in intensity, Mikkelsen remained the busiest player on the park, making two good saves to thwart McFadden.

And Boyd was denied a hat-trick when the goalkeeper clawed away the striker's header.

With five minutes remaining, O'Connor completed the scoring when he connected with a McFadden delivery and his side-foot finish squirmed its way past the exhausted Mikkelsen.

These teams will never progress though, so I don't see the point of them playing really but It'd be pretty unfair just to stop them from playing just because they are shite.

They weren't wanting them to stop playing, they were asking if they should do a round of qualifiers to reach the qualifying group.

I'm sure we could have told him that, right? I think (honestly now, with no bias) that Cole will be happy there for a season, maybe until next christmas, but after that, Mourwhinio will pick up on someone new, and Cole will end up shunted to the sidelines. And then he'll realise that if he thought Arsenal treated him badly, that would be worse.

I'm all for the 'smaller' teams to have their chance, otherwise there's no point in them playing is there. The big fixtures are the highlights on their calenders. It may be a bit of a rip-off for the fans of the better quality sides, but how often can Andorran fans, or San Marino fans get to say they saw their side play England, or Germany. Look at Lichtenstein yesterday. They got a point off the world champions. It instantly put Italy on the back foot against France, and could be the difference between Italy winning or coming second in the group. And from a revenue point of view, Andorra are going to get a fair bit from the return fixture, so why should they be denied this just because people don't think they're really worthy enough to play better opposition.

British trio face European poser (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/5309910.stm)

A legal case in Portugal may have an impact on Manchester United, Arsenal and Celtic's Champions League fixtures.
United and Celtic are in Benifca's group, while Arsenal are in with Porto.

But Gil Vicente have appealed through the civil courts, breaching Fifa rules, after their relegation for allegedly fielding an ineligible player.

"The ultimate sanction is that the Portuguese national team and all their clubs are banned from all competitions by Fifa," said Uefa's William Gaillard.

Direct judicial or political interference in the running of football is forbidden under Fifa statute.

Fifa is expected to give its decision to the Portugal Football Association on 11 September.

Uefa director of communications Gaillard added that any sanctions would "impact on Uefa's competitions, including the Champions League".

Arsenal, in Group G, are scheduled to play host to Porto on Tuesday 26 September, with United, in Group F, travelling to Benfica on the same day.

Celtic's first scheduled encounter with Portuguese opposition is on Tuesday, 17 October at home to Benfica.

That's interesting. We'll have to see how to the point Fifa are going to be in their punishment, to try and make sure they get their message across to other teams that it can't be gotten away with.

Plus, I'd be quite happy to get rid of Porto from our group, but it may mean we don't get any tough opposition until the second round, and that may count against us.

Should the lower rated National teams (e.g Faroe Island and Andorra) play in a qualifying group for the World Cup/Euro Championship qualifiers?

They are basic cannon fodder and it's ripping off fans who spend their money to watch their national team.

It's a fair point, but yeah i'd agree in saying it's unfair to them as they wouldn't get a chance. and i mean the worse teams would never get a chance to play the big teams.

They claim that one of the main reasons is Pardew. This I understand because he's got a hell of a team together to be honest, a few key additions and they could be UEFA cup material year in and year out.

However, this claim that within 7 years they could be challenging at the top seems a little bit bullshit. Apparently West Ham have a bigger global following than Chelsea... especially among the Israel community.

The two Argies cost West Ham absolutely nothing and this move has been confirmed as a shop windowe arrangement... £30M each to keep them and the main stipulation of the contract is that if the players are fit then the club MUST play them.

I would guess that there were too many stipulations for the deal - you have to play them if they're fit, you have to sell them if someone offers this much, and you won't get anything for it, you have to do this, you have to do that etc... It's too much hassle for clubs that don't really need them. West Ham must believe that they can profit from it this season, win some silverware, and hopefully bounce into a good season next year without them.

From Chelski's point of view - if you havre to play them, what was the point in buying Ballack and Chenk? Selection would be a nightmare! And from Arse's pov, and Man U's.

Marco Materazzi has finally explained what he said to Zinedine Zidane before he was headbutted by the Frenchman during Italy's World Cup final victory.
Zidane was sent off for the attack and later claimed he was provoked after Materazzi had insulted his mother.

But Materazzi told Gazzetta dello Sport that Zidane's sister was the subject.

He said: "I was tugging his shirt, he said to me 'if you want my shirt so much I'll give it to you afterwards,' I answered that I'd prefer his sister."

Materazzi added: "It's not a particularly nice thing to say, I recognise that. But loads of players say worse things.

"I didn't even know he had a sister before all this happened."

Materazzi was later handed a two-match ban from world governing body Fifa, while Zidane was banned for three games and fined £3,260.

Zidane, who has since retired from football, has never specified what Materazzi said to him and has refused to apologise to his opponent.

Asked on 12 July exactly Materazzi had said, Zidane would only offer that it was "very personal" and concerned his mother and his sister.

"You hear those things once and you try to walk away," added Zidane. "That's what I wanted to do because I am retiring. You hear it a second time and then a third time..."

I love all these incredulous reactions to Gallas' alleged shenanigans (yes, I wrote shenanigans), like this kind of shit doesn't go on all the time. Why is it that some other national leagues are looked on as corrupt, fixed, dodgy, whilst the EPL is still to be viewed as whiter-than-white? For instance, ever seen a throw-in given away in ridiculous circumstances about 1 second after kick-off? That's obviously got nothing to do with someone betting on when the first throw-in is given away, though. Of course not.

If it happens with something as innocuous as a throw-in, why not something more important to the outcome of a game?

That Bale fella looks very good. Also, Giggs was showing Ronaldinho how it's done. <3 the Giggs.

Really, when was the last time Ronaldinho played all that well? Before the European Cup final...

Southampton Will walk the championship this year, and have already got a decent enough squad to survive a premiership season. so it all depends on the loyalty of Bale...

I think the stopped doing "bizzare bets" (First player to be injured, corner kick etc) on football after Anderton explained why he did it.

Doesn't mean that the same thing doesn't happen with "first goalscorer" and the like.

Doesn't mean that the same thing doesn't happen with "first goalscorer" and the like.

It's easier for the zanier bets- First corner, first throw in - which is why they've been banned - but the first goalscorer, no-one playing knows who the first goal scorer is going too be.

This is very true. Romanov admits to team influence

Vladimir Romanov has admitted that he has influenced Hearts' squad selections and has promised to continue his close involvement in first-team affairs.
The Tynecastle majority shareholder said: "To be able to pick the team, you should be at the training ground twice a day and, as you know, I am not.

"However, it's not enough for the coach Vladas Ivanauskas to make the choices.

"Sometimes there are situations when I ask the coach searching questions about the make-up of the team."

The Russian was speaking from Kaunas, where he watched Scotland defeat Lithuania in a Group B Euro 2008 qualifier.

Former Soviet nuclear submariner Romanov took a controlling interest of the Edinburgh club in February 2005.

And he has already dispensed with previous managers John Robertson, George Burley and Graham Rix before the appointment of Ivanauskas.

He has often been accused of involving himself in first-team matters and his revelations will confirm the suspicions of Hearts supporters.

"I will ask Valdas why a particular player has been selected, like Takis Fyssas instead of Lee Wallace," he added.

"The coach will say: 'During the training session, Fyssas was stronger and better'.

"Then I will ask: 'But did he have a proper medical test before the game?'

"If I see that the coach is in any doubt about his answer then there is a doubt about his decision.

"So then I ask the club doctor about the two players and if they had fitness tests.

"That is my level of involvement. I want to know how much the coach knows about each and every player."

Romanov has set his sights high, with visions of on-field success and ambitious plans to redevelop Tynecastle.

"When I took over, my main target was for Hearts to become Scottish champions," he explained.

"But I realised both Rangers and Celtic wanted to kill Hearts, but they are too late to do that now."

Romanov also insists he wants the club to focus on bringing through young talent, with players such as Andrew Driver, Lee Wallace and Christophe Berra making an impact.

"Last season I was asking: 'Why is Andrew Driver not playing more often?' and they were laughing at me," added Romanov.

"But now we can see what this player brings to the team."

Cahill really is a dirty git. Had Alonso in a headlock just before Johnson got the second Everton goal. I'm not surprised really.

I'm displeased. I only had time to make one change to my yahoo team before the deadline today.... and my prem one has gone to shit. I didn't change anything and think there'll be a few not playing. Oh well.

I've got Cahill in my Premier league team - I'd considered putting him in my Yahoo team, but I changed my mind at the last minute for Kevin Nolan.

What on God's green earth is happening with Liverpool??? I was so sure they'd be storming the premiership by now, and it's all going horribly wrong  C'mon Liverpool. I want you to do well....

I think they're getting quite a bit of shit flung their way today. Had loads of chances. And Sissoko got yellow carded (then had to be subbed off) for claiming a penalty. Which should have been a penalty - for handball.

Abandoned - after 25 minuites due to serious injury
That's going to have to have been a really, really, serious injury (or death) for a match to be abandoned. Keep an ear out for that...

Jimmy Bullard was strechered off with what appears to be a bad injury.

It prevented Chris Kamara from saying "unbelieveable", he did however, claim that the injury made him "Sick" :(

Graham Poll has no place in football, he proved that in the World Cup. Everton deserved to win, they took their chances. Liverpool didn't. From now on: Kuyt starts every match he's not injured for. Bellamy has to sort his attitude out. Alonso needs to get Real Madrid out of his head and start passing to his own team a bit more often. Aurelio needs to buy a "defending for dummies" book. Agger should have kept his place in the team on merit - even Carragher said so before the game.

Arsenal are just being pants right now. And once again Chelski are going to win the league thanks to the refs. It's nice to know that things never really change all that much.

Yes, but I actually watched the match. Liverpool had about 8 times as many shots on goal, and they hit the bar more times than (Bryan Robson/George Best/take your pick of famous drunk). If it was the other way round, you'd be saying Liverpool robbed Everton, Everton deserved at least a draw, etc.

I think he meant, why did you pick him up as opposed to anyone else...

And surely it's Liverpool's fault for hitting the woodwork and not getting it in the goal - Everton didn't seem to have this problem.

I picked him up on it because he was a twat about it, and has been in the past.

And surely it's Liverpool's fault for hitting the woodwork and not getting it in the goal - Everton didn't seem to have this problem.

I didn't argue that they weren't at fault for not taking their chances (see earlier post). I simply made the point that it wasn't a hammering in the traditional sense, not by a long shot. Anyway, you'd probably say Graham Poll did a good job, so this is probably talking to the proverbial brick wall.
