Bolton sign Anelka in record deal

Nicolas Anelka has signed a four-year deal with Bolton after the Premiership club agreed to pay a club record £8m to Fenerbahce for the striker.
The Frenchman, 27, who has previously played for Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, successfully completed a medical with Wanderers on Thursday.

He has been in Turkey with Fenerbahce for the last 18 months.

"Nicolas is a player with an amazing track record in the Premiership," said Bolton boss Sam Allardyce.

"Patience is a virtue and I am pleased to say that all the waiting and hard work we've done behind the scenes has paid off."

"He was born to score goals. His talent and experience will be a valuable asset for us.

"It's an unprecedented amount of money for Bolton Wanderers to spend and fully underlines the club's ambition," Allardyce added.

France deliver Makelele warning

France coach Raymond Domenech has warned Chelsea's Claude Makelele he risks a two-game club ban if he fails to report for the Euro 2008 qualifiers.
The 33-year-old is in France's squad for games against Georgia and Italy, despite announcing his retirement after the World Cup final loss to Italy.

Domenech wants Makelele to play and any player who refuses an international call-up can be hit with a domestic ban.

And Domenech insisted: "We still have the law for us."

Domenech added: "We had a discussion with Makelele but I didn't ask for his opinion.

"For me it would be unthinkable to see a great player playing for a great club not playing for his national team.

"A player who refuses to accept a selection is liable to a two-match suspension.

"I had a discussion with Jose Mourinho, as I often do with the coaches of our international players, but it was not a matter of reaching an agreement over Makelele.

"I told him where I stood, he told me where he stood. We still have the law for us.

"I spoke a lot with Claude and told him that he was not obliged to come and play with us, but also that it would be better if he did feel obliged to."

I read it earlier, and I have to admit to being a bit shocked. I know Sectarianism does go on up in Scottish football (a bit, I'm not all that up on it), but a simple action such as that is very dodgy ground to be punished over. You see people crossing themselves all the time in european football, and he comes from a very catholic country. Would there be complaints if Ronaldinho came over and did it? He does it several times in a match.

There was a Panorama programme on last year called "Scotland's secret shame" - which was about the Old Firm and bigotry. It's really embarrassing.

Gabriel Amato blessed himself before coming onto make his Rangers debut. He was told he could do that in the tunnel, but not infront of the crowd.

Boruc had blessed himself in front of the Rangers fans. I remember Peter Grant scored for Celtic at Ibrox and celebrated by blessing himself - He later claimed that it was the biggest mistake he ever made in his career. That was not really played upon as Chris Woods, Terry Butcher and Frank McAvennie were sent off and ended up in court. Graham Roberts also ended up in court for "Conducting" the Rangers fans who were celebrating an injury time equaliser.

When Paul Gascoigne played his first games for Rangers - pre-season friendlies in Denmark - some fans sang a song "Gazza, give us the Sash" - Gazza, didn't know what it was, but was informed it was a song the fans sung and that it's please them if he pretended to play a flute.

Gazza scores in his debut, mimicks the flute playing and got death threats from Celtic fans.

A few years later, Gazza was warming up at Celtic park infront of the Celtic fans and was getting some abuse from the fans, his response was to repeat the sash mimicking incident. In his autobiography, he described it as "The most stupid thing I ever did. Mad? It was suicidal. Celtic were raging and so were Rangers who fined me £20,000. The next few weeks I was getting death threats"

BBC Article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/5289202.stm)

A rivalry tied up in religion

The caution given to Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who crossed himself during a match against Rangers, has brought the issue of sectarianism in Scotland back into sharp focus.
The rivalry between Glasgow clubs Rangers and Celtic - known collectively as the Old Firm - is historically tied up in religion.

Celtic were formed in 1888 by Irish Catholic immigrants who began emigrating to the West of Scotland in the 1840s and their descendants.

Rangers, who were formed in 1873, have always been perceived as "the Protestant club" and Celtic "the Catholic club".

Up until 1989, when Mo Johnston signed for them, Rangers had never fielded a high-profile Catholic player.

Yet a range of people support the clubs, including those without religion and those who belong to other religions.

The majority of Rangers and Celtic supporters do not get involved in sectarianism.

But it is the minority who tend to grab the headlines.

Old Firm matches have always been tense affairs and the mutual antipathy between the supporters has often been stirred up by sectarian songs and chants on both sides.

In the 1970s the chants became increasingly influenced by The Troubles in Northern Ireland, with some Celtic fans supporting the Provisional IRA and some Rangers fans applauding the actions of loyalist groups.

The tribal nature of Old Firm clashes is underlined by Rangers fans flying Union flags and Celtic followers waving the Irish tricolour.

The mutual animosity was outlined four years ago when some Celtic fans began flying Palestinian flags and some Rangers supporters responded by fluttering Israeli flags.

In 1999 leading QC Donald Findlay resigned his position as vice chairman of Rangers after he was caught on video singing a sectarian song, The Billy Boys, after the Rangers v Celtic Scottish Cup final.

He was also fined £3,500 by the Faculty of Advocates.

In 1995 Paul Gascoigne, playing for Rangers, landed himself in trouble in a pre-season Old Firm friendly as he mimicked playing the flute, infuriating many Celtic supporters who saw the act as a loyalist symbol.

Gascoigne, who was unaware of the significance, was disciplined by the Scottish FA.

In 2002 Celtic made an unprecedented appeal to a "vocal minority" of its supporters to stop chanting IRA slogans during games.

Many Old Firm matches have been marred by crowd trouble over the years, and there has also been violence away from the football grounds.

In 1995 Mark Scott, who was wearing a Celtic shirt, was stabbed to death as he walked past a pub full of Rangers fans.

Five years later several of his friends helped set up an organisation, Nil By Mouth, which campaigns against sectarianism.

Both clubs have made considerable efforts to end sectarianism among their fans.

Last month Rangers chairman David Murray said the consequences for the club of fans continuing to sing sectarian songs would be grave.

That followed a Uefa fine for the Ibrox club for "discriminatory chanting".

Last year Celtic and Rangers jointly launched a project to tackle bigotry and sectarianism in the west of Scotland.

The two clubs have ploughed tens of thousands of pounds into the Old Firm Alliance initiative, which aims to educate youngsters and the wider community about the ills of sectarianism through a series of football courses.

Later this year Scotland's First Minister Jack McConnell - who describes the issue as "Scotland's secret shame" - will host a second summit on sectarianism in an effort to eradicate bigotry.

A similar event was held in Glasgow in 2005, bringing together about 30 organisations.

Celtic and Rangers football clubs, the Catholic Church, Church of Scotland and the Orange Order are all involved in the project.

It is against this background that Artur Boruc's actions have to be judged.

Player caution 'not for blessing'

Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc was cautioned for inciting an Old Firm crowd rather than for blessing himself, the Crown Office has stressed.
In a statement issued on Monday, it said the "very limited" action had been taken against the player for gesticulating at the Rangers support.

He had also blessed himself in the incident during the Ibrox match.

But the Crown Office stressed it would not take action against individuals for "acts of religious observance".

"We would equally make clear that the police and prosecutors cannot ignore conduct which appears to be inciting disorder," said a spokesperson.

Keane becomes new Sunderland boss

Roy Keane has officially signed a contract to become the manager of Championship side Sunderland.
The former Manchester United captain agreed to a three-year deal with the Stadium of Light side.

"This represents a major coup for our football club," Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn told the club website.

"The fact that one of the most influential figures in world football is willing to come here should make all the Sunderland fans very happy."

Gravesen set For Cetlic (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/5290454.stm)

Real Madrid midfielder Thomas Gravesen is in Glasgow for talks and a medical with Celtic.
Gravesen told BBC Sport on Sunday that Celtic and four English Premiership sides - Newcastle, Bolton, Everton and Middlesbrough - were in for him.

Gravesen left Everton for Spain in a £2.5m deal in January 2005 and has been made available for a £2m fee.

And Real president Ramon Calderon told the club website that an agreement had been reached to sell Gravesen.

The 30-year-old hopes to have a new club before Thursday's transfer deadline and Denmark's opening match of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

The Danes are due to play an international friendly against Portugal on Friday, before they start on the road to Euro 2008 away to Iceland on 6 September.

The Danish squad was to assemble on Sunday but national coach Morten Olsen has given Gravesen time off to secure a new club.

A Celtic spokesman would only say that "talks (with Gravesen) are ongoing".

Former Celtic player Tommy Burns, now head of youth development at Parkhead, believes Gravesen would be a great signing.

"He has got a great pedigree," Burns said.

"He played in the English Premiership and made a big impact there.

"He went to Real Madrid and maybe didn't make so much of an impact there because they obviously have so many top players.

"But I don't think there is any doubt that, if Celtic get him to come here, he would make a huge impact."

If Celtic are to sign Gravesen, it would suggest that Stilian Petrov is leaving Scotland, with Aston Villa favourites to land the Bulgarian.

I really do reckon that the next Man United manager will be someone from a smaller club. Someone like Chris Coleman or Paul Jewell. Maybe even Martin Jol.

I like having Brits/UK, but all I've known is Fergie so when the time comes to change - it'll be a big change whoever it is. I like Coleman and Jewell, but don't think United would go for them at the moment. If they perform well for the next season or 2, however, then maybe..

As long as Keane performs OK, I think he's now a shoe-in to the job soon enough (depending on when Fergie retires). Always thought it would be Martin O'Neill until about a season ago really. And Carlos Quieroz and Sven can fuck off.

Villa close in on Celtic's Petrov (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/aston_villa/5295522.stm)

Aston Villa are close to agreeing a transfer fee of £6m with Celtic for midfielder Stilian Petrov.
The 27-year-old is currently away on international duty with Bulgaria but it is understood his representatives have held talks with Villa.

"Celtic know the situation, I've expressed my desire to leave many times," said Petrov.

"It's no secret that I'm a close friend with Villa boss Martin O'Neill. Let's see if I'm going to be Villa player."

Meanwhile, Petrov's agent, Tony McGill, is becoming frustrated with the lack of progress made.

"Stilian has not signed for anybody," said McGill.

"I am working on other projects now. I have spent too much time on this now.

"If it happens somebody is going to have to do an awful lot of work and it's not going to be me."

New Villa boss O'Neill was in charge of Petrov during his five-year reign at Celtic Park.

The Bulgarian joined Celtic in July 1999 from CSKA Sofia and has made more than 250 appearances for the club.

Petrov, who is preparing for Euro 2008 qualifiers against Romania and Slovenia, is contracted to the Scottish champions until 2010 but submitted a transfer request at the end of last season.

He was not included in Saturday's squad for the 2-1 win over Hibernian and did not feature at Inverness the week before.

Several Premiership clubs had been linked with the player, including Portsmouth.

But Pompey boss Harry Redknapp admitted defeat over the weekend, telling BBC Radio Five Live: "I think you will find Petrov has gone to Villa. That's the plan and we wish him all the best."

The transfer window closes on 31 August and, now that O'Neill has the confirmed financial backing of American tycoon Lerner, Villa have been able to meet Celtic's asking price, which could rise to £7m.

Meanwhile, former Celtic defender Didier Agathe has been training with Villa this week and could be offered a short-term deal.

Agathe, who had a trial with Blackburn earlier in the summer, also played under O'Neill at Celtic.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My mate and I are going to annoy the Celtic fans at our work!

He's getting a Liverpool shirt with Bellamy on the back, Villa shirt with Petrov on back - If deal is done - for me.

Also got this on bbc webpage:

Meanwhile, the agent of Tottenham full-back Lee Young-Pyo claims the South Korea international is close to a move to Italian side Roma.

"Tottenham and AS Roma have agreed in principle to the transfer of Lee Young-Pyo," Chin Sung-Won told the Yonhap news agency.

"We are in talks with AS Roma on detailed contract terms.

"You can consider the deal as almost sealed, as the only remaining procedure is the player's decision."

I saw this in the Metro, wasn't too happy with the article. Lot's of clubs advertise and we're finally doing something to extend our fan base, which i think is a good thing. If only the Metro spent as much time and column inches reporting on the matches for london teams as they did this article... instead they just pretty much mock us. So much for a London paper...

The stadium holds about 19,000, so we're always gonna struggle filling that in division 3, we have about 8,000 die hards that'd go no matter what. but just for example, we took 48,000 fans to the League cup windowwipes trophy, we need to get them back regularly somehow.

I'm the same as you. Sometimes i feel bad when i read that Leeds have 11,000 people barely making a noise in a 40,204 capacity stadium, but given the gash that is on show (not even the good kind) it's hard to be motivated to spend 1/6 of a weeks pay on a ticket. We managed to get 32,000 people in the stadium on our 11 game unbeaten run at the start of the year and it plummeted once we hit a shit run.

Manchester City have banned their defender Ben Thatcher for six matches and fined him six weeks' wages for his challenge on Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes.
The internal club punishment is separate from any Football Association sanctions over the incident, which left Mendes unconscious.

City said two matches of the six-game ban would be suspended.

Thatcher was left out of the weekend's Arsenal match, which means he will now sit out a further three games.

Those games will be the 11 September trip to Reading, and the away games at Blackburn on 17 September and Chesterfield three days later.

Manchester City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh said: "As custodians of the club, and football in general, the board and the manager felt it was important to act as soon as possible."

Thatcher, who has written to Mendes to apologise for the challenge, must answer an FA charge of serious foul play by 12 September.

Mendes has said he will not pursue a legal claim against Thatcher but the Portuguese midfielder did urge the FA to "make the right decision on his punishment".

wow, i won't hear the end of this...

Argentina striker Carlos Tevez says he and team-mate Javier Mascherano have agreed to sign for West Ham.
The World Cup duo, who both play for Corinthians in Brazil, are set to move to Upton Park on a year-long loan.

Tevez, 22, claims on his website he and Mascherano, 22, have signed contracts with West Ham despite being linked with moves to Manchester United and Arsenal.

The Hammers are thought to have struck a deal with Media Sports Investments, who own the rights to the two players

an update on this, it's quite funny really, guess who owns a stake in MSI (MSI being the company who own Tevez and masccheoihf)? Mr Abramovic.

Right, my 2 pence on the West Ham story.

The sports company (MSI) that bought the rights to the 2 players from Corinthians (as Corinthians are £25m in debt) just so happens to be part owned by a certain Jewish Russian Billionnaire. Also, no fee has been touted around which is very unusual.

Common sense and popular opinion seems to be that the business (MSI) that owns the 2 players registration and have signed them to West Ham for a nominal fee for the stated length of contract, with payments being made on a yearly basis. This enables the club owned by the aforementioned Jewish Russian Billionnaire to monitor the progress of the players with a view to signing them from the company and to pay the yearly fee.

Technically, this is inline with FIFA's 'no money outside of football in transfers' view as the money is coming from a football club to a sports company that outrightly owns the players professional registration. Basically, they could brand themselves as football club that doesn't play.

This could revolutionise football transfers and make players the equivalent of renting a DVD from Blockbuster, but to the highest bidder rather than usual £3.50 a night.

Something just doesn't quite fit.

They've hardly released any of the details either. All they've said is that they've signed the pair for undiclosed fee on permanent contracts.

Doesn't give any clue of the fee or wages or length of contract etc..

sunnydalehighdropout
August 31st 2006, 05:12 PM
From Sky Sports.

Neither club is saying how long the deals are for, wages, fee. Just a permanent deal.

The pair was offered to Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal but they said no because of terms. MSI must be offering something very dodgy here, especially given that he has been Man United's No.1 transfer target this summer.

Apparently, it's common in South America for companies to own players and 'rent' them out to players.

but, now that would have to mean Abramovic would have to resign from the board of MSI as it surely wouldn't be allowed. Abramovic is the only factor in this that doesn't make sense/is still dodgy

to be fair, if we had some more of Dennis wises mates at Millwall, we may have gone up. GreameLe Socks a prime example. Theo said no at the last minute

A Transfer Dodgier Than West Ham's Argie Deal (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/h/hibernian/5272354.stm)

Zemmama to play despite ban claim

Hibernian have been given the all-clear to play Merouane Zemmama, despite the Moroccan Football Federation claiming that it had suspended the midfielder.
Fifa has launched an investigation into claims by former club Raja Casablanca that false documents were used to secure the 23-year-old's transfer.

The FRMF announced: "We have decided to suspend the player until the end of our inquiry."

But Fifa told BBC Sport that Hibs can continue picking Zemmama.

Hibs believed he was a free agent when he signed a five-year contract with the Scottish Premier League club.

And Zammama has already made four appearances for Tony Mowbray's side.

But the FRMF disciplinary committee took its decision after Raja claimed that the midfielder is contracted to them until 2009.

Hibs chairman Rod Petrie previously told the Edinburgh Evening News: "The player himself denies the existence of any such contract. He is adamant he was freed.

"We are disappointed to be in dispute with another club, but that seems to have arisen after we complied with all steps and after we were told by our national association that the player was ours and ours to play."

The Scottish FA says it received clearance from their Moroccan counterparts after Hibs moved to sign the player after he impressed on trial.

"We approached the signing of Zemmama in the same way as we approach the signing of any player," said Petrie.

"Obviously the paperwork was more extensive because of the requirement for a work permit.

"We submitted the documentation to the SFA as it is up to them to obtain international clearance; that is a procedure between the national associations and is not something a club is involved in.

"We were told he was fully registered, he was our player.

"The international transfer certificate transfers the player's registration from the country he was last registered in to the SFA.

"It is part of the regulations that such a certificate is unconditional - you either get it or you do not."

He's not all that key. We didn't have him for most of last season. Yes, we could have done better, but defensively that was down to the faults of the centre defence, and I think this will give us more strength. Clichy is almost fit, and Flamini is fit, and he was in the left back position most of the season. Plus Hoyte is actually playing there at the moment, and he hasn't looked too bad.

He would have had no problems at Villa. He'd have been guarenteed first team, and everyone would have been happy. Newcastle have been asses if they've called him back.

It's to my understanding, and it seemed a little obvious to me, that we were willing to let Milner go as we were currently in talks for another player and needed the cash, the deal had obviouslly fallen through meaning we don't need the cash for him and would rather have Milner than nobody so it was called off.
Souness (which explains a lot as he's a prat!) sent Milner down to Villa for a year in exchange for Nobby Solano and I'm supposing some first team football...Milner will get a chance here, Nobby isn't 25 anyway and we don't have much cover in those kind of areas.

I would love to know what's going on there. It can't be good, can it? Or am I just being too cynical. Fair play to West Ham if this all went through smoothly, I like them and I want them to do really well, but this is just weird.

Apparently, there's a rumour going around the internet, that the real reason Judas Cole left Arsenal is that Mr. Wenger once made fun of the size of his manhood in the dressing room in front of the other players, and Chelsea were the team who stopped laughing long enough to sign him when he demanded to leave... :D

Well he didn't adapt in Spain, so I think there's a good chance he'll be fine over here. That tends to be the way. And I know Reyes is whiney, and I moan about him, but I wish him well over in Madrid.

Gallas is good. We don't have a left back problem, but we do need another good solid centre back, and Gallas fits the bill no problem. If we can stop our defence leaking, then we'll be great this season.

I think Gallas is an awesome player. I honestly feel that he was a major player in Chelsea's success.

Does anyone else think that Chelsea are VERY short of central defenders now? After selling Gallas and Huth they're left with Terry, Carvalho and Boulahrouz. Get one injured or suspended and they look in trouble.

Yes, I did like Reyes and I understood his desire to go back home but we need to have players who want to play for us. Hopefully a weight will be lifted off the squad now and we can re-focus.

Hopefully Thierry won't be too annoyed that Cole's gone. I think we've got a fantastic squad this year, and a lot of those players fill me with great confidence. As long as we play like a team, we're gonna be great.

Chelski began to leak a bit towards the end of last season, and they looked far from unstoppable. I think they're not going to find it all their own way this year by a long shot. They're certainly not all that steady, but if the refs go their way again this year, they'll probly edge it.

Arsenal still lack the clout to mount a serious title challenge this season. They have too many youngsters in the first eleven. Although personally I think they made extremely good business in swapping Cole for a much better player. Gallas will be a far greater asset to the team than Cole ever was.

Baptista is a waste of space. He was pathetic for Madrid, I doubt he'll be much better for Arsenal.

I honestly don't know about Baptista - It's a different set-up, but I've got to hope he fits in.

As for the title, well yeah, they probably won't win it this year - but I don't think they have to. As long as it's a good campaign, I think Mr. Wenger sees this year as a transition - new stadium, blah, blah. These youngsters are absolutely coming into their own right now, and there's no reason why they can't succeed.

Arsenal got the best end of the deal... they got rid of a shithead want-away and got the centre half with proven class that they so badly need... Chelsea got another world-class left-back when Bridge is more than capable of doing that job.

I dunno if Baptista's gonna be up to England, he's been a disappointment for Real.

Captain Stu

Reyes is definately in the mould of foreign imports who should have set the league on fire and instead may aswell have set themselves on fire. :D

I don't think Baptista is the answer though, I think Arsenal's best current team (all people fit) would be:

Henry
Van Persie
Ljungberg Fabgregas Silva Rosicky
Clichy Gallas Toure Ebouoe
Lehmann

That's pretty effective for me, Rosicky not operating as a strict wingers - working like Gerrard did for England against Greece... but I still reckon Arsenal need an out-and-out winger to hug the line and get balls into the box. :)

Bud
September 1st 2006, 03:48 PM
Out and out pacey winger = Walcott? Bringing him on during the second half has proven to be a major spark so far.

I don't know anything about Baptista, I just hope he doesn't prove to be another big flop. I'd go for:

Lehnman
Eboue Toure Gallas Clichy
Gilberto
Hleb Fabregas Rosicky
Van Persie
Henry

I don't like Thierry up front on his own too much - he ends up over on the wing with no one to aim at. This is why I'm hoping Baptista is going to be a box sitter - Thierry can go off and do his stuff on the edge of the box, down by the corner flag etc... but he's still got Baptista to aim at in the middle.
