...."the pretender" played live whilst jessy, rami and pat are on tour with them or will they play it as a four-piece.

I think strings is the only noticeable part when they play it live. A third guitar isn't totally necessary and I can't hear the keys on the recordings I've heard.
I think Nate could just play bass on the intro on a higher octave and it would have the same effect.
I couldn't imagine them skipping their big single from the album if they go back to the four piece.

i have listened to it with an ear on "could they play it as a four" and i think they could - there are a few others that they do as a 7 or 8 but i could live without them (marigold, skin and bones) and i prefer the short live version of my hero.
would look forward to hearing the pretender though.

if my band can play it 3-piece, i'm sure the foo's can pull it off as 4-piece!

I hope so, they're needed on other songs too.
