Why do People Always Compare Foo Fighters to RHCP?

Literally, everyone ive told that im seeing the foo's in November alway says:

"Well, i still prefer the Chillis!"

I have two problems with that answer:

1. How can you prefer the Chillis to the Foo's?
2. Why? They sound nothing alike, they are just both succesful

All I know is that the bands know each other very well. Musically, the bands lead in two different directions. Although they did have a tour together back in spring 2000, I think.

I love them both. But ive never seen anyone really compare them. Maybe mentioned in the same thread or article and they toured together blah blah blah but I unno. I dont compare them.

I'd just like to start off by saying the Foos are my favourite band by a long shot. The chilis are right up there on my list (probably 2 or 3).
That said, I think the Peppers have way more musical talent. Flea is an incredible bassist, Anthony is a better singer than Dave for sure. What separates the Foos for me is the songwriting. Fucking phenominal songwriting. I never get sick of their shit and it all strikes a chord with me like no other. And I appreciate that WAY more than, say, someone who can rip into a crazy guitar solo. Being an amazing guitarist takes practice, whereas good songwriting is god given and cannot really be explained :)

beats being compared to Pearl Jam right? My theory is just that they are the only American bands that have longevity..As you all said before, there is no comparing them musically. I prefer the Foos, but im sure some think the other way. I like the CP but they are BEAT to death on rock radio (oxymoron) to the point where all their stuff sounds the same.

well im not sure thats true about the singing. I mean Anthony couldn't even sing much, he used to just almost rap his songs until he finally tried got into his singing around BSSM album (forgive me if im wrong i read his autobiography a while ago). I think it is fair to say they have unique voices tho.

It's true both the bands' song writing is a different process, with anthony's songs primarily being about his drug experiences i think (and noobs would say dave's were about kurt. har har)

i love both of these two bands and the only way you can compare them is by saying they are both quality.

I don't hear people ever compare them... all i know is I saw the Foo open for the Peppers twice a few about 7 or 8 yrs ago and the Foo blew them off the stage. We left during the Peppers both shows.

Kiedis can't sing for shit, their live shows suck now, and their last two albums were just remixes of Californication and a bunch of stolen tunes. I'd never compare Foos to that.

Nothing against what those guys do but Anthony Kiedis has an extremely limited vocal range and he isn't exactly pitch-perfect live.

He's not really trying to be Pavaratti anyway, but he's not as good a vocalist/singer as he is a frontman.

Dave is not much better live man. Seriously. I find the albums have good singing on them but I've never been impressed by his singing live. Not that it's shit or anything, he can scream bloody murder on key, but that's pretty much the only part of his singing that impresses me.

Dave's voice is fine. He's no William DuVall or Scott Weiland (Weiland sings much better live than in the studio, if you can believe it), but he gets the job done and at least he can sing in key, which Kiedis can't seem to do.

Foo's are nothing like the RHCP.. FF are a real good band and RHCP were a real good band. I'm really kind of tired of Anthony.. It's kinda old..

Music couldn't be any better these days. Velvet Revolver's finally gelled together and made a kickass fuckin record, AND they're playing GNR and STP songs, Alice in Chains is back together with a new album out next year, Dinosaur Jr.'s new album kicked my ass, and Foos made an amazing record that doesn't sound like Taylor's snare is farting every time he hits it, and the guitars sound alive. I couldn't ask for more.

Alot of people just aren't looking. Granted, there hasn't been a crop of new bands with the stage presence and song quality of these older ones yet. It seems like for the most part, people under 30 aren't making good music.

I agree with the quote above. We should all be thankful for bands that persevere and continue to make good music. Because of bands like the Foo's we are able to look forward to new album releases. Yet we have the older songs to take a stroll down memory lane and remember the good times we had when we first heard those sounds. Enjoy the present, smile and remember the past, and look forward and pray for an even better future!
